धारिणो न नमेद्विद्वान्नासनं चापि दापयेत्
A learned person should not bow to those who wear such things, nor offer them a seat.
कृतांजलिरुपासीत गच्छंतं पृष्ठतोन्वियात्
With joined palms, one should respectfully attend, and follow behind as they depart.
नामुक्तकेशैर्भोक्तव्यं न नग्नः स्नानमाचरेत् 4.205.
One should not eat with unbound hair, nor bathe while naked.
उच्छिष्टो न स्पृशेच्छीर्षं सर्वे प्राणास्तदाश्रयाः
One who is unclean should not touch the head, for all the vital energies reside there.
नान्यत्र पुत्र शिष्याभ्यां शिफया ताडनं स्मृतम्
Except for one's son or disciple, striking with the foot is forbidden.
न चाभीक्ष्णं शिरःस्नानं कार्यं निष्कारणं नरैः
One should not bathe the head repeatedly without cause.
न भुक्तोत्तरकालं च न गम्भीरजलाशये
Nor should one bathe after eating, or in deep water reservoirs.
तिलपिष्टं च नाश्नीयात्तथास्यायुर्न हीयते
One should not eat sesame flour; thus, one's lifespan is not diminished.
परीवादं न शृणुयादन्येषामपि जल्पताम्
One should not listen to slander, even if others are speaking it.
गारुडानि च रत्नानि बिभृयात्प्रयतो नरः
A man should carefully wear gems with protective powers.
सिताः सुमनसो हृद्या बिभृयाच्च नरः सदा
One should always wear white, fragrant, and pleasing flowers.
प्रियं च नानृतं ब्रूयान्नान्यदोषानुदीरयेत्
One should speak what is pleasant and true, and not mention the faults of others.
न दुष्टयानमारोहेत्कूलच्छाया न संश्रयेत् 4.205.
One should not mount a wicked vehicle, nor take shelter in the shadow of a riverbank.
बंधकीबंधकीभर्तृक्षुद्रानृत कथैः सह
One should avoid the company of prostitutes, their lovers, the base, and those who speak falsehood.
बुधो मैत्रीं न कुर्वीत नैकः पंथानमाश्रयेत् ।। नावगाहेज्जलौघस्य वेगमग्रे नरेश्वरा
A wise person should not make friendship with such people, nor travel alone on a path; nor, O king, should he enter the swift current of a river at its front.
प्रदीप्तं वेश्म न विशेन्नारोहेच्छिखरं तरोः
One should not enter a burning house, nor climb to the top of a tree.
न कुर्याद्दन्तसंवर्षं न कुर्याच्चलनासिकाम्
One should not make a shower of spittle, nor move the nose restlessly.
नोच्चैर्हसेत्सशब्दं च न मुञ्चेत्पवनं बुधः
A wise person should not laugh loudly with sound, nor release wind in public.
न श्मश्रु भक्षयेच्चैव न लोष्ठानि च मर्दयेत्
One should not eat mustache or beard hair, nor crush lumps of earth.
नोच्चासने समासीत गुरोरग्रे कदाचन
One should never sit on a high seat in the presence of the teacher.
लोकद्वये शुभं प्रेप्सुः प्रेत्य स्वर्गे महीयते
Desiring good fortune in both worlds, one is honored in heaven after death.
दुष्टस्त्रीसंनिकर्षं च वर्जयेन्निशि सर्वदा
One should always avoid the company of a wicked woman at night.
केशास्थिकण्टकामेध्यबलिभस्मतुषांस्तथा 4.205.
Likewise, hair, bones, thorns, impure things, leftovers, ashes, and husks.
पंथा देयो ब्राह्मणेभ्यो राजभ्यः स्त्रीभ्य एव च
The path should be given to Brahmins, kings, and women.
मूकांधबधिराणां च मत्तस्योन्मत्तकस्य च
And also to the mute, blind, deaf, intoxicated, and insane.
न हीदृशमनायुष्यं लोके किञ्चन विद्यते
There is nothing in this world as life-shortening as this.
न चेर्ष्या स्त्रीषु कर्तव्या दारा रक्ष्याः प्रयत्नतः
One should not be jealous regarding women; wives must be carefully protected.
मूर्खोन्मत्तव्यसनिनो विरूपान्मानिनस्तथा
The foolish, the mad, the addicted, the deformed, and the arrogant as well.
पानीयस्य क्रिया नक्तं तथैव दधिसक्तवः
The preparation of water at night, as well as curds and fried grains, should not be done.
नोर्ध्वजानुश्चिरं तिष्ठेन्न रहस्यपरो भवेत्
One should not stand for long with knees raised, nor be devoted to secrecy.
