कल्पक्षेत्रे च राज्यं स्वं कृतवान्धर्मतो नृपः
In the land of Kalpa, the king righteously established his own rule.
इंद्रप्रस्थेनंगपालस्तोमरान्वयसंभवः
He was the ruler of Indraprastha, descended from the Tomara lineage.
अग्निवंशस्य विस्तारो बभूव बलवत्तरः
The expansion of the Agni dynasty became even more powerful.
उत्तरे चीनदेशान्ते सेतुबंधे तु दक्षिणे
In the north, at the border of China, and in the south at Setubandha.
अग्निहोत्रस्य कर्तारो गोब्राह्मणहितैषिणः
They performed Agnihotra sacrifices, seeking the welfare of cows and Brahmins.
द्वापराख्यसमः कालः सर्वत्र परिवर्तते
A time equal to what is called Dvapara constantly revolves everywhere.
ग्रामेग्रामे स्थितो देवो देशेदेशे स्थितो मखः 3.3.4.
In every village the deity abides, and in every region the sacrifice is established.
इति दृष्ट्वा कलिर्घोरो म्लेच्छया सह भीरुकः
Seeing this, the dreadful Kali, fearful and accompanied by foreigners, appeared.
द्वादशाब्दमिते काले ध्यानयोगपरोऽभवत्
During this twelve-year period, he devoted himself to meditation and yoga.
. तुष्टाव मनसा तत्र राधया सहितं हरिम्
There, together with Radha, he praised Hari in his mind.
.पाहि मां शरणं प्राप्तं चरणे ते कृपानिधे
Protect me, O ocean of mercy, as I have sought refuge at your feet.
सर्वपापहरस्त्वं वै सर्वकालकरो हरिः
You are indeed the remover of all sins, O Hari, the creator of all times.
द्वापरे पीतरूपश्च कृष्णत्वं मम दिष्टके
In Dvapara you had a fair form, but by my destiny you became dark.
चतुर्गेहं च मे स्वामिन्द्यूतं मद्यं सुवर्ण कम्
O Lord, in my four houses there are gambling, liquor, and gold.
त्यक्तदेहस्त्यक्तकुलस्त्यक्तराष्ट्रो जनार्दन
Janardana, having abandoned body, family, and kingdom.
इति श्रुत्वा स भगवान्कृष्णः प्राह विहस्य तम्
Hearing this, the blessed Krishna smiled and spoke to him.
ममांशो भूमिमासाद्य क्षयिष्यति महाबलान् 3.3.4.
A portion of myself will descend to earth and destroy the mighty ones.
इत्युक्त्वा भगवान्साक्षात्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत
Having spoken thus, the Lord himself vanished right there.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे विप्र यथा जातं शृणुष्व तत्
In the meantime, O sage, listen to what happened.
नवदुर्गाव्रतं श्रेष्ठं? नववर्षं चकार ह

साह तां यदि मे मातर्वरो देयस्त्वयेश्वरि
She said, 'O Mother, if you will grant me a boon, O Sovereign Lady—'
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु सा देवी तत्रैवान्तरधीयत
The goddess replied, 'So be it,' and then vanished right there.
उद्वाह्य धर्मतो भूपः स्वगेहे तामवासयत्
The king, having married her according to righteousness, brought her to his own house.
आवार्यो वत्सराजश्च शतहस्तिसमो बले
The king named Āvārya was as strong as a hundred elephants.
शतयत्तः स्मृतो म्लेच्छः शूरो वनरसाधिपः
A Mleccha named Śatayatta, a heroic lord of the Vanaras, was renowned.
तालवृक्षप्रमाणेन .चोर्ध्ववेगो हि तस्य वै
His upward leap was equal in height to a palm tree.
ताभ्यां नृपाभ्यां तद्युद्धमभवल्लोमहर्षणम् 3.3.4.
A hair-raising battle took place between those two kings.
तदा मैत्री कृता ताभ्यां तालनेन समन्विता
Then, a friendship was made between them, accompanied by the giving of a palm tree.
पुत्रार्थं कारयामास शैवं यज्ञं विधानतः
