पर्वकालं समासाद्य संक्रांतौ ग्रहणेऽपि वा
At the time of a festival, or during a solstice, or even at an eclipse—
वलभीभिर्विचित्राभिश्चतुश्चक्रसमन्वितम्
With splendid canopies and adorned with four wheels—
ध्वजे च गरुडं कुर्यात्कूबराग्रे विनायकम्
On the banner one should make Garuda, and at the front of the yoke, Vinayaka.
मध्ये नारायणोपेतं लक्ष्मीपुष्टिसमन्वितम्
In the center, with Narayana present, endowed with Lakshmi and prosperity—
नानाफलसमायुक्तमुपरिष्टाद्वितानकम्
Furnished with various fruits, and above, a canopy—
कुर्यात्पंचपलादूर्ध्वमाशताच्च नरोत्तम
One should make it weighing at least five palas, and up to a hundred, O best of men.
त्रिःप्रदक्षिणमावृत्य गृहीतकुसुमांजलिः
Having circumambulated it three times, holding a handful of flowers—
नमोनमः शंकरपद्मजार्कलोकेशविद्याधरवासुदेवैः
Salutations again and again to Shankara, Padmaja, Arka, Lokesha, Vidyadhara, and Vasudeva.
यत्तत्पदं परमगुह्यतमं पुराणमानंदहेतुगणरूपविमुक्तबन्धाः 4.189.
That supreme, most secret, ancient abode, the cause of bliss, whose forms are free from bondage—
यस्मात्त्वमेव भवसागरसंप्लुतानामानंदभांडचितमध्यगपानपात्रम्
Because you alone are the vessel in the midst of the ocean of existence, filled with the treasure of bliss, for those submerged therein—
इत्थं प्रणम्य कनकेभरथप्रदानं यः कारयेत्सकलपापविमुक्तदेहः
Thus, having bowed, whoever causes the gift of a golden elephant chariot, his body is freed from all sins.
कृतदुरितवितानातुष्टिसद्वह्निपालव्यतिकरकृतदेहोद्वेगभानोऽपि बंधून्
Even one whose body is afflicted by the consequences of evil deeds, by the fire of dissatisfaction, or by the misfortunes of guardianship, brings satisfaction to his relatives.
विश्वचक्रदानविधिवर्णनम् विश्वचक्रमिति ख्यातं सर्वपापविनाशनम्
The procedure for the gift of the universal wheel is described; it is known as the destroyer of all sins.
तपनीयस्य शुद्धस्य विशुद्धात्माथ कारयेत्
Of pure gold, purified in mind, one should have it made.
तस्याप्यर्द्धं कनिष्ठं स्याद्विश्वचक्रमुदाहृतम्
Its half, the lesser portion, is called the universal wheel.
षोडशारं ततश्चक्रं भ्रमन्नेम्यष्टकावृतम्
Then the wheel should have sixteen spokes, with a rim encircled by eight segments, revolving.
शंखचक्रेऽस्य पार्श्वस्थे देव्यष्टकसमावृतम्
The conch and discus are at his sides, surrounded by eight goddesses.
अत्रिर्भृगुर्वशिष्ठश्च ब्रह्मा कश्यप एव च
Atri, Bhrigu, Vashishtha, Brahma, and also Kashyapa are present.
रामो रामश्च कृष्णश्च बुद्धः कल्की च ते दश
Rama, another Rama, Krishna, Buddha, and Kalki—these ten.
चतुर्थे द्वादशादित्या वेदाश्चत्वार एव च
In the fourth, the twelve Adityas and the four Vedas as well.
लोकपालाष्टकं षष्ठे दिङ्मातंगास्तथैव च
In the sixth, the eight guardians of the world, and likewise the elephant guardians of the directions.
अन्तरांतरतो देवान्विन्यसेदष्टमे पुनः 4.190.
Again, in the eighth, one should place the gods in the intermediate spaces.
मंडपं कुण्डमेकं च कारयेद्वस्त्रसंयुतम्
One should construct a pavilion and a single altar, adorned with cloth.
कृष्णाजिनोपरिगतं विश्वचक्रं विधानतः
The universal wheel should be arranged according to the ritual, placed upon a black antelope skin.
पूर्णकुम्भाष्टकं तद्वद्वस्त्रमाल्यविभूषितम्
Similarly, eight full pots, decorated with cloth, garlands, and ornaments.
अधिवास्य ततश्चक्रं पश्चाद्धोमं समाचरेत्
After consecrating the wheel, one should then perform the sacrifice.
होमं कुर्युर्जितात्मानो वस्त्राभरणभूषिताः
Those who have mastered themselves, adorned with garments and ornaments, should perform the sacrifice.
चक्रप्रतिष्ठितानां तु सुराणां होम इष्यते
The sacrifice is prescribed for the gods established in the wheel.
ततो मंगलशब्देन स्नातः शुक्लांबरो गृही
Then, to the sound of auspicious music, the householder, bathed and dressed in white, proceeds.
इममुच्चारयन्मंत्रं कृत्वा तत्त्रिःप्रदक्षिणम् परमानंदरूपी त्वं पाहि नः पापकर्दमात्
Reciting this mantra and circumambulating it three times: 'You, whose form is supreme bliss, protect us from the mire of sin.'
