शयनस्थस्य भवति यदन्यदुपकारकम्
Whatever else is helpful for one lying on a bed,
शय्यामेवंविधां कृत्वा ब्राह्मणायोपदापयेत्
Having prepared such a bed, one should present it to a Brahmin.
नमस्ते सर्वदेवेश शय्यादानं कृतं मया
O Lord of all gods, I have made the gift of a bed.
यथा न कृष्ण शयनं शून्यं सागरजातया
O Krishna, just as the bed of the ocean-born is never empty,
दत्त्वैवं तल्पममलं प्रणिपत्य विसर्जयेत्
Having thus given a spotless couch, one should bow and then dismiss the recipient.
ददाति यदि धर्मार्थं मानवो बांधवे मृते
If a person gives, for the sake of righteousness, to a relative who has died,
तेनोपभुक्तं यद्वस्तु किंचित्पूर्वं गृहे सता
Whatever object was previously enjoyed by him while he was present in the house,
यदिष्टं च तथास्यासीत्तत्सर्वं परिकल्पयेत्
and whatever he desired in the same way, all that should be arranged.
पूजयित्वा प्रदातव्यो मृतशय्या यथोदिता
After worshipping, it should be given as prescribed for the death-bed.
सुखं वसत्यसौ जंतुः शय्यादानप्रभावतः 4.184.
By the power of giving a bed, that being dwells happily.
न धर्मेण न शीतेन बाध्यते स नरः क्वचित्
That person is never afflicted by righteousness nor by cold.
विमानवरमारूढः सेव्यमानोप्सरोगणैः
Mounted upon a splendid celestial chariot, attended by groups of apsaras,
शय्याप्रदानममलं तव पांडुपुत्रसंकीर्तितं सकलसौख्यानिधानमेतत्
The pure gift of a bed, praised by the son of Pandu, is the repository of all happiness.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे शय्यादानविधिवर्णनं नाम चतुरशीत्युत्तरशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana, in the Uttaraparvan, in the dialogue of Sri Krishna and Yudhishthira, the eighty-fourth chapter named 'Description of the Procedure for Giving a Bed' is concluded.
आत्मप्रतिदानविधिवर्णनम् तत्तेऽहं संप्रवक्ष्यामि दानं मानविवर्धनम्
Now I shall clearly explain to you the procedure for self-gift, which increases human merit.
दानकालः सदा तस्य मुनिभिः परिकीर्तितः
The time for giving is always praised by sages.
लोहजां प्रकृतिं भव्यां कारयित्वात्मनो नृप
Having a noble form made of metal constructed, O king,
अभीष्टलोकसहितां सर्वोपस्करसंयुताम्
together with the desired world and furnished with all accessories,
कुंकुमेनानुलिप्तांगीं कर्पूरागुरुवासिताम्
with limbs anointed with saffron and scented with camphor and agaru,
यद्यदिष्टतमं किंचित्तत्सर्वं पार्श्वतो न्यसेत्
whatever is most desired, all that should be placed at its side.
तत्सर्वं स्थापयेत्पार्श्वे स्वयं संचिंत्य चेतसि
All that should be set beside it, having carefully considered in one's mind.
पूजयित्वा लोकपालान्गृहान्देवीं विनायकम्
After worshipping the guardians of the worlds, the household goddess, and Ganesha,
इममुच्चारयेन्मंत्रं विप्रस्य पुरतो बुधः
the wise one should recite this mantra in front of the Brahmin.
सर्वरत्नसमायुक्ता तव विप्र निवेदिता 4.185.
O Brahmin, offered to you is this, adorned with all jewels.
तस्मादात्मप्रदानेन ममात्मा सुप्रसीदतु
Therefore, by the offering of myself, may my soul be greatly pleased.
ब्राह्मणश्चापि गृह्णीयात्कोदादिति च कीर्तयन्
And the Brahmin should accept it, reciting 'kodā'.
विधिनानेन राजेन्द्र दानमेतत्प्रयच्छति
O king, whoever gives this gift according to this rite—
साग्रं वर्षशतं दिव्यं स्वर्गलोके सुरैर्वृतः
Surrounded by the gods, he dwells in the heavenly world for a full hundred divine years.
यत्रैवोत्पद्यते जंतुः प्राप्ते कर्मक्षये पुनः
Wherever a being is born, when the results of his deeds are exhausted, he is born there again.
इष्टबंधुजनैः सार्द्धं न वियोगं कदाचन
He is never separated from his beloved relatives.
