काम्यो दानविधिः पार्थ क्रियमाणः प्रयत्नतः
What I have told you, and what I shall tell, I will recount.
ज्ञेयं निष्कशतं सर्वदानेषु विधिरुत्तमः
The procedure for desired gifts, O Partha, when performed with effort—
एवं वृक्षरथेंद्राणां धेनोः कृष्णाजिनस्य च
Should be known as the best among all procedures of giving.
अतोऽन्यूनेन यो दद्यान्महादानं नराधिप
Thus, for the lordly chariots of trees, for cows, and for black antelope skins—
आदौ तावत्प्रवक्ष्यामि कालाख्यं पुरुषं तव
First, I shall explain to you the being known as Time.
अर्ध्यप्रदानमंत्रोक्त मात्मप्रतिकृतिस्तथा 4.181.
The offering is to be made with the prescribed mantra, along with an image representing oneself.
सर्वदानोत्तमं राजन्कृष्णाजिनमथाष्टमम्
O King, among all gifts, the eighth—black antelope skin—is the most excellent.
एतत्ते दानदशकं वेद्मि पार्थिवसत्तम
This, O best of kings, is the tenfold gift that I know.
दानादृते नोपकारो विद्यते धनिनोऽपरः
Apart from giving, there is no other way for the wealthy to do good.
कूप उल्लिख्यमानोऽपि भवत्येव बहूदकः
Even when a well is drawn from, it still remains full of water.
चतुर्थ्यां वा चतुर्दश्यां विष्ट्यां वा पांडुनंदन
On the fourth, fourteenth, or new moon day, O son of Pandu,
खड्गोद्यतकरो दीर्णो जपा कुसुमकुंडलः
With sword raised in hand, fierce, adorned with hibiscus flower earrings,
तीक्ष्णासिपत्रधनुषा विस्फारितकटीतटः
With sharp sword, bow, and arrows, his waist girded tightly,
गृहीतमांसपिंडश्च वामे करतले तथा
And holding a lump of flesh in the left palm,
संपूज्य गंधकुसुमैर्नैवेद्यं विनिवेद्य च
He should be worshipped with fragrant flowers, and food offerings should be presented.
स्वगृह्योक्तविधानेन शतमष्टोत्तरं यजेत् 4.181.
According to the procedure prescribed in one's own house, one should perform one hundred and eight offerings.
ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवादीनां त्वमसाध्योऽसि सुव्रत
O virtuous one, you are unattainable even to Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and others.
पूजितस्त्वं मया भक्त्या प्रार्थितश्च तथा सुखम्
You have been worshipped by me with devotion and likewise entreated for happiness.
एवं संपूजयित्वा तं ब्राह्मणाय निवेदयेत्
Having thus worshipped him, one should present (the offering) to a Brahmin.
दक्षिणां शक्तितो दद्यात्प्रणिपत्य विसर्जयेत्
One should give a gift according to one's ability, bow down, and then dismiss (the Brahmin).
नापमृत्युभयं तस्य न च व्याधिकृतं भयम्
He has no fear of untimely death, nor any fear caused by disease.
देहांते सूर्यभवनं भित्त्वा याति परं पदम् संतत्या च श्रिया युक्तः पुत्रपौत्रसमन्वितः
At the end of the body, he passes through the abode of the sun and attains the supreme state, endowed with lineage, prosperity, and accompanied by sons and grandsons.
संपूज्य कालपुरुषं विधिवद्द्विजाय दत्त्वा शुभाशुभफलोदयहेतुभूतः
Having duly worshipped Kālapuruṣa and given to a brāhmaṇa, he becomes the cause of the arising of auspicious and inauspicious results.
सप्तसागरदानविधिवर्णनम् सप्तसागरकं नाम सर्वपापप्रणाशनम्
Description of the rite of giving the seven seas: The offering called 'seven seas' destroys all sins.
पुण्यं दिनमथासाद्य युगादिग्रहणादिकम्
On attaining an auspicious day, along with the beginning of a yuga and similar occasions,
प्रादेशमात्राणि तथा रत्निमात्राणि वा पुनः
One should take portions the size of a palm or the weight of a ratni, again,
संस्थाप्यानि च सर्वाणि कृष्णाजिनतिलोपरि
And all these should be placed upon black antelope skin and sesame seeds.
द्वितीयं पयसा तद्वत्तृतीयं सर्पिषा पुनः
The second with milk in the same way, the third again with clarified butter.
षष्ठं शर्करया तद्वत्सप्तमं तीर्थवारिणा
The sixth with sugar, likewise, the seventh with water from a sacred place.
केशवं क्षीरमध्ये तु घृतमध्ये महेश्वरम्
Keśava should be placed in the midst of milk, Maheśvara in the midst of ghee.
