एवं विधिं ततः कृत्वा रथं तं सगजं नरः
Having performed such a rite, a man prepares that chariot along with elephants.
भूषितं कण्ठकटकैः कर्णवेष्टांगुलीयकैः
Decorated with necklets, bracelets, earrings, and rings.
बद्धतूणिं धनुष्पाणिं बहुचर्मविभूषितम्
With a quiver fastened, holding a bow, adorned with many hides.
यजमानस्ततः प्राज्ञः शुक्लांबरधरः शुचिः
Then the wise sacrificer, pure and clad in white garments,
इममुच्चारयेन्मन्त्रं सर्वपापप्रणाशनम् सुप्रतीकोंजनः सार्वभौमोऽष्टौ देवयोनयः
Should recite this mantra, which destroys all sins: 'Of noble form, universal ruler, eight divine lineages.'
तेषां वंशप्रसूतौ तु बलरूपसमन्वितौ 4.180.
Born in their lineage, endowed with strength and beauty.
ममेभरथदानेन प्रीयेतां शिवकेशवौ
May Shiva and Kesava be pleased by my gift of elephants and chariots.
इत्युच्चार्य महाभागे पूजयित्वा पुनःपुनः
Having spoken thus, O noble one, and having worshipped again and again,
स्वदारनिरतं शांतं वेदवेदांगपारगम्
One who is devoted to his own wife, peaceful, and accomplished in the Vedas and their branches.
पुनः प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य रथस्थं द्विजसत्तमम्
Again, having circumambulated the excellent Brahmin seated on the chariot,
ततो यज्ञावसाने तु दीनांधादीञ्जडान्कृशान्
Then, at the end of the sacrifice, to the poor, blind, dumb, and emaciated,
अनेनैव विधानेन संकल्प्य रथमुत्तमम्
By this very procedure, one should resolve to give the excellent chariot.
तदेव होमद्रव्यं च होममंत्रास्त एव हि
Those same offerings for the fire ritual, and those same mantras for the sacrifice.
हयौ लक्षणसंयुक्तौ खलीनालंकृताननौ
The horses, possessing auspicious marks, with decorated bridles and faces,
सुप्रग्रहयुतौ योज्यौ दाता तस्मिन्नथोत्तमे
Well-trained and harnessed, should be yoked by the donor to that excellent chariot.
नमोस्तु ते वेदतुरंगमाय त्रयीमयाय त्रिगुणात्मकाय 4.180.
Salutations to you, O Veda-horse, composed of the three Vedas, possessed of the three qualities.
रथोऽयं सविता साक्षाद्वेदाश्चामी तुरंगमाः
This chariot is the Sun himself, and the horses are verily the Vedas.
इत्युच्चार्य ततस्तस्मिन्रथे ब्राह्मणसत्तमम्
Having recited thus, then upon that chariot, the foremost of Brahmins—
अनेन विधिना यस्तु दद्याद्वाजिरथं बुधः
Whoever, with this procedure, gives a horse-chariot, being wise—
सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तः सर्वामयविवर्जितः
Is freed from all sins and devoid of every disease.
अप्सरोगणसंकीर्णे विमाने सूर्यवर्चसे
In a radiant aerial car, thronged by hosts of Apsaras—
पुण्यक्षयादिहाभ्येत्य राजा भवति धार्मिकः
When his merit is exhausted, he comes here and becomes a righteous king.
गजेनैकेन निर्दिष्टः कश्चिद्गजरथो नृप
Some king is described as having a chariot with a single elephant.
दानमंत्रास्त एवोक्ताः फलं तत्र निगद्यते
The donation-mantras have thus been spoken; the fruit thereof is now declared.
यच्छंति ये रथवरं सुधुराक्षचक्रं विक्रांतवारणयुतं तुरगान्वितं वा
Those who give a splendid chariot, with strong axles and wheels, yoked with mighty elephants or with horses—
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे गजरथा श्वरथदानविधिवर्णनं नामाशीत्युत्तरशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana, in the Uttaraparvan, in the dialogue of Sri Krishna and Yudhishthira, the eighty-first chapter, named 'Description of the Rite of Giving Elephant and Horse Chariots,' is concluded.
कालपुरुषदानविधिवर्णनम् युधिष्ठिर उवाच दानान्यन्यानि मे कृष्ण कथयस्व यदूत्तम
Description of the rite of giving to the Personified Time—
संसारसागरोत्तारहेतुभूतोऽसि माधव
Yudhishthira said: O Krishna, best of the Yadus, tell me of other gifts.
पुनरेव प्रवक्ष्यामि यद्यस्ति तव कौतुकम्
You are the cause for crossing the ocean of worldly existence, O Madhava.
कथितानि मया तुभ्यं कथयिष्यामि यानि च
