नारी वा पुरुषो वापि दानस्यास्य प्रभावतः
Whether woman or man, by the power of this gift,
सोऽपि सद्गतिमाप्नोति किं पुनर्यः प्रयच्छति
That person too attains a good destiny—how much more so the one who gives it.
ब्रह्मांडखंडयुगलं सकुलाचलं च दिग्भागसागरसरोवरसिद्धजुष्टम्
A pair of cosmic eggs, along with their mountains, directions, oceans, lakes, and the abodes of the accomplished—
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिसंवादे ब्रह्मांडदानविधिवर्णनं नाम सप्तसप्तत्युत्तरशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana, in the Uttara Parva, in the dialogue between Sri Krishna and Yudhishthira, ends the one hundred seventy-seventh chapter, named 'Description of the Rite of Giving the Cosmic Egg.'
कल्पवृक्षदानविधिवर्णनम् रममाणस्तया सार्द्धं बहुवर्षगणान्स्थितः
He remained there, delighting with her, for many years.
ततः सुरगणाः सर्वे परं त्रासमुपागताः
Then all the hosts of gods became extremely fearful.
वैश्वानरमुखा देवा महादेवं त्रिलोचनम्
The gods, led by Agni, approached Mahadeva, the three-eyed one.
मयि प्रसन्ने विबुधा दुर्लभं हि न किंचन
When I am pleased, O gods, nothing is difficult to obtain.
मोघो भवतु देवेश भीताः स्म तनयस्य ते
Let it be fruitless, O Lord of the gods—we are afraid of your son.
अनपत्यश्च देवेश भव भूतपते सदा
O Lord of beings, always remain without offspring.
स्थाणुवच्च स्थितश्चास्मि नाम चैतद्भविष्यति
I shall remain like a pillar, and this shall be my name.
ततः क्रुद्धा उमा तेषां देवानां वाक्यमब्रवीत्
Then Uma, angered, spoke these words to the gods:
यस्मात्तस्माद्भवंतोऽपि न पुत्राञ्जनयिष्यथ
Because of this, you too shall not beget sons.
दत्त्वा शापं ततो देवी देवानामाह शंकरम् 4.178.
Having pronounced this curse, the goddess then spoke to Shankara:
अपुत्रस्य गतिर्नास्ति इतीयं श्रूयते श्रुतिः
There is no destiny for one without a son—so declares the scripture.
सौवर्णस्तेन दातव्यः कल्पवृक्षो गुणान्वितः
Therefore, a golden wish-fulfilling tree, endowed with qualities, should be given.
कृत्रिमं वापि गृह्णीयाद्वृक्षं वा स्थावरादिकम्
One may take an artificial tree or any stationary plant.
तेन पुत्रवतां लोका देवि तस्य न संशयः
O Devi, by that, there is no doubt he attains the worlds of those who have sons.
बहुशाखः सुवर्णांगोप्यनेककुसुमान्वितः
It should have many branches, a golden trunk, and be adorned with numerous flowers.
फलानि तस्य दिव्यानि सौवर्णानि प्रकल्पयेत्
One should arrange for its fruits to be divine and made of gold.
दानमेतत्प्रदातव्यं राजतं चैवमुत्तमम्
This gift should be given, and likewise, the excellent one made of silver.
चतुष्कोणेषु कुर्वीत चतुरः कांचनद्रुमान्
At the four corners, one should place four golden trees.
सहस्रेण तदर्द्धेन तस्याप्यर्द्धेन वा पुनः
With a thousand, or with half of that, or again with half of that.
प्रागुदक्प्रवणे देशे मंडपं तत्र कारयेत् 4.178.
In a place sloping to the east or north, one should construct a pavilion there.
हस्तमात्रप्रमाणेन कुंडमेकं सुशोभनम्
A beautiful altar, measuring one hand-span, should be made.
तत्र वै ब्राह्मणा योज्या ऋग्यजुःसामपाठकाः
There, Brahmins should be engaged who recite the Rig, Yajur, and Sama Vedas.
सर्वाभरणसंपन्नास्ताम्रपत्रद्वयान्विताः
They should be adorned with all ornaments and furnished with two copper plates.
गुडप्रस्थोपरिष्टाच्च स्थापयेत्कल्पपादपम्
Above a prastha of jaggery, one should place the wish-fulfilling tree.
कामदेवमधस्ताच्च सकलत्र प्रयोजयेत्
Below it, one should arrange Kamadeva together with his consort.
मंदारं दक्षिणे पार्श्वे श्रिया सह तथा घृते
On the southern side, Mandara should be placed, along with Shri and ghee.
