O best of men, the merit gained by giving in this manner—
In the first age, there was a king named Sudyumna, O descendant of Bharata.
Then, after installing his son in the kingdom, the king went to the forest.
Entering the dreadful forest, he performed severe austerities.
After a long time, the king reached his destined end.
Surpassing the realms of Indra and others, he went to the world of Brahma from here.
He possessed a divine body adorned with golden markings and decorated with jewels.
There, he dwelled day after day, yet was deprived of divine enjoyments.
O best of men, he was tormented by hunger and by intense thirst.
He said, 'O Lord, this is the world of Brahma, free from all faults.'
'By what result of karma does my hunger not depart?'
'Indeed, I did not give much, being attached to self-centered reasoning.'
'Thinking that giving binds the self, therefore, you did not give.'
'By imparting instruction, you ought to show favor.'
'Give to the foremost of twice-born; by that, you will attain satisfaction.'
Thus addressed, the king came properly to the world of mortals.
He then went again to heaven and obtained everlasting satisfaction.
Whoever gives the cosmic egg, by that gift, all that moves and does not move is given.
By giving this to a worthy family, one saves them and their future generations—of this there is no doubt.
Again attaining human birth, that person is born into a righteous family.
Whether woman or man, by the power of this gift,
That person too attains a good destiny—how much more so the one who gives it.
A pair of cosmic eggs, along with their mountains, directions, oceans, lakes, and the abodes of the accomplished—
Thus, in the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana, in the Uttara Parva, in the dialogue between Sri Krishna and Yudhishthira, ends the one hundred seventy-seventh chapter, named 'Description of the Rite of Giving the Cosmic Egg.'
He remained there, delighting with her, for many years.
Then all the hosts of gods became extremely fearful.
The gods, led by Agni, approached Mahadeva, the three-eyed one.
When I am pleased, O gods, nothing is difficult to obtain.
Let it be fruitless, O Lord of the gods—we are afraid of your son.
O Lord of beings, always remain without offspring.
