Having ruled this earth for thirty thousand years,
He installed his sons in the seven islands of the realm.
Hearing that the king, radiant in glory, had gone to the forest of penance,
Seeing those sages who had come, their sins burned away by austerity,
With water for washing the feet, offerings, water for sipping, and pleasant questions and answers,
There arrived the great and radiant Pulastya, son of Brahma.
Seeing him, all the sages and the great chariot-warrior king,
Having made proper acquaintance with him, as was fitting and prescribed,
Then all the sages sat together comfortably.
Then, at the end of the conversation, some of the sages along with the king—
Attainment of the highest state is granted to men and women, O best of sages.
We desire to hear this from you; this king is devoted to vows. Pulastya said: Listen, all sages, to the secret that removes sin.
I shall tell you the supreme and complete form of all gifts.
A man who is ungrateful or a false witness is released from sin.
By acts such as Kṛcchra, Cāndrāyaṇa, and those known as Tulāpuruṣa.
O best of sages, the vows of Kṛcchra, Cāndrāyaṇa, and others.
Are accomplished through bodily hardship; they do not apply to householders.
Even where Kṛcchra is possible, such dharma is never praised for them.
Therefore, the wise should always unite the self with the vital airs moving outside.
The offspring of the foremost of gods, and the eldest of Vibhāvasu.
Having cast off all sins, one instantly attains a divine body.
O best of kings, it has been explained to you and to them, as heard from me. Yudhiṣṭhira said: O supreme Lord, tell me the procedure for Tulāpuruṣa donation.
Tell me, O greatly fortunate one, out of compassion for my devotees. Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: Listen attentively, O king, to the procedure as I speak.
O foremost of kings, the donation called Tulāpuruṣa here.
Should be given at the time of lunar or solar eclipse, or in the month of Māgha, O best of kings.
Or whenever wealth is obtained, then this should be given.
When one is seized by Death by the hair, one should perform dharma.
That is the time for giving; this is my reason. The wise should construct a pavilion with four auspicious faces.
Firmly construct a divine platform, furnished with fresh branches, sloping towards the east and north.
In the center of that, make an auspicious altar, raised to the height of a hand.
