वस्त्रयुग्मेन संवीतं पुस्तकं प्रतिपादयेत्

अनेन विधिना दत्त्वा यत्फलं प्राप्नुयान्नरः
By giving according to this procedure, what result does a man obtain?
यत्पुण्यं तीर्थयात्रायां यत्पुण्यं यज्वनां तथा
The merit gained from a pilgrimage to holy places, and the merit of those who perform sacrifices,
कपिलानां सहस्रेण सम्यग्दत्तेन यत्फलम्
The result obtained by properly giving a thousand tawny cows,
पुराणं भारतं वापि रामायणमथापि वा
Whether it is the Purana, the Mahabharata, or even the Ramayana,
प्रातरुत्थाय यः शिष्यानध्यापयति यत्नतः
He who rises early and diligently teaches his students,
उपाध्यायस्य यो वृत्तिं दत्त्वाऽध्यापयते जनः
The person who, having given support to the teacher, causes instruction to be given,
छात्राणां भोजनाभ्यंगं वस्त्रं भिक्षामथापि वा
Food, anointing, clothing, or alms for the students,
विवेको जीवितं दीर्घं धर्मकामार्थसंपदः
Discernment, long life, and the attainment of righteousness, desire, and wealth,
शास्त्रं शस्त्रकलाशिल्पं यो यदिच्छेदुपार्जितुम् 4.174.
Whoever wishes to acquire scripture, weaponry, arts, or crafts,
वाजपेयसहस्रस्य सम्यगिष्टस्य यत्फलम्
The result of properly performing a thousand Vajapeya sacrifices,
शिवालये विष्णुगृहे सूर्यस्य भवनेऽथ वा
Whether in a temple of Shiva, a house of Vishnu, or a dwelling of the Sun,
गोभूहिरण्यवासांसि शयनान्यासनानि च
Cows, land, garments of gold, beds, and seats.
धर्माधर्मं न जानाति विद्यया रहितः पुमान्
A man deprived of learning does not know righteousness or unrighteousness.
त्रैलोक्यं चतुरो वर्णाश्चत्वारश्चाश्रमाः पृथक्
The three worlds, the four castes, and the four distinct stages of life.
चतुर्युगानि राजेंद्र एकसप्ततिसंख्यया
O King, the four ages, numbering seventy-one.
क्षितिं वोपेत्य कालांते राजा भवति धार्मिकः
Having attained the earth at the end of time, the king becomes righteous.
रूपसौभाग्यसंपन्नो दीर्घायुर्नीरुजो भवेत्
He becomes endowed with beauty and good fortune, long-lived and free from disease.
दानं विशेषफलदं जगतीह नान्याद्विद्यां विहाय वदनाब्जकृताधिवासाम्
Charity, above all, yields special fruit in this world; nothing else does, except knowledge, which abides in the lotus of the mouth.
तुलापुरुषदानविधिवर्णनम् पालयामास वसुधां प्रजापतिरिवापरः
He ruled the earth like another Lord of creatures.
त्रिंशद्वर्षसहस्राणि पालयित्वा महीमिमाम्
Having ruled this earth for thirty thousand years,
राज्ये निक्षिप्य तनयान्सप्तद्वीपेषु सप्त सः
He installed his sons in the seven islands of the realm.
तपोवनगतं श्रुत्वा राजानं परमद्युतिम्
Hearing that the king, radiant in glory, had gone to the forest of penance,
तानागतानृषीन्दृष्ट्वा तपोनिर्धूतकल्मषान्
Seeing those sages who had come, their sins burned away by austerity,
पाद्यार्घ्याचमनीयेन प्रियप्रश्नोत्तरेण च
With water for washing the feet, offerings, water for sipping, and pleasant questions and answers,
आजगाम महातेजाः पुलस्त्यो ब्रह्मणः सुतः
There arrived the great and radiant Pulastya, son of Brahma.
तं दृष्ट्वा मुनयः सर्वे स च राजा महारथः
Seeing him, all the sages and the great chariot-warrior king,
कृत्वा तु संविदं तेन यथायोग्यं विधानतः
Having made proper acquaintance with him, as was fitting and prescribed,
ततस्तु मुनयः सर्वे समा सीना यथासुखम्
Then all the sages sat together comfortably.
ततः कथांते कस्मिंश्चिन्मुनयस्ते सराजकाः
