Having made such a pavilion, on an auspicious day and according to prescribed rites,
thereafter, a man should offer it to the Brahmins with this mantra.
By this gift, may the fathers and grandfathers be satisfied.
For three fortnights, O great king, it is the supreme sustenance for living beings.
He should give it without obstruction, not looking at the recipient's face.
Whoever, by this method, removes the suffering of summer heat and thirst,
the merit gained at all sacred waters, and the fruit of all gifts,
he, ascending a celestial chariot shining like the full moon,
served by Yakshas and Gandharvas, enjoys for twenty crore years.
Thereafter, he attains the supreme state, difficult to return from; every day, the dharmaghaṭa is to be given, with the face wrapped in a cloth.
Its renewal should be performed every month, O best of men.
Addressing Śaṅkara, Viṣṇu, and Brahmā, O descendant of Kuru,
This dharmaghaṭa is given, embodying Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva.
(Thus is the mantra for giving the dharmaghaṭa.) Whoever gives the dharmakuṃbha in this manner,
May Lord Janārdana, in the form of the aśvattha tree, be pleased with me.
Whoever waters the root of the tree for four months,
With water that is sweet and cool, dispelling fatigue, at the edge of the city, on the roadside, in a place where travelers gather.
Thus, in the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana, in the Uttara Parva, in the dialogue between Sri Krishna and Yudhishthira, ends the one hundred and seventy-second chapter, named 'Description of the Procedure for Constructing a Resting Place.'
Description of the procedure for offering the Agnishtika fire-offering.
Yudhishthira said: How should the Agnishtika be given by those who fear the cold in winter?
O Partha, I shall tell you about the Agnishtika; listen to it—how and by what method it brings happiness to all beings.
First, in the month of Margashirsha, on an auspicious and beautiful day,
in the courtyard of the gods, on the road, at home, or in a spacious public square,
then one should kindle the fire, offering oblations with the sacred utterances in due order.
If someone is hungry, food should be prepared for him.
O Partha, the stories that are told—those I am unable to recount.
The people, sitting comfortably, may speak as they wish; no one restrains them.
Hear from me, O king, the merit and fruit of this act as it is declared.
For sixty thousand years and six thousand years besides,
in this world, one is born as a twice-born who knows the four Vedas.
