We were all sent to the forest, wearing garments of bark and deer skin.
Knowing that we had gone to the forest, the Brahmins, with controlled senses—
The best of Brahmins, seeing us suffering out of affection—
Having abandoned his family and the group of friends who had come—
Having thus understood, I again spoke to those sages.
You have all assembled here for my sake, accomplished in knowledge and wisdom.
All of you, together with your attendants and brothers, are present.
Then Maitreya addressed me, 'Listen, son of Kunti, to my words.'
There was once a certain brahmin woman, devoted to celibacy, living in the forest hermitage.
The sages were pleased with her purity, humility, and self-control.
She asked them, 'What vow or charity should I undertake?'
She was the support of beings, blessed with many children, and dear to her husband.
Then Vasiṣṭha spoke to her, 'Listen, I will tell you.'
Make a vessel of copper, using five hundred palas in weight.
But if one is entirely without means, one may even make it of clay.
Fill it with well-cooked, soft rice made from mung beans and rice grains.
Its sides and rim should be washed clean, and it should be anointed with sandalwood.
On the day of the sun's transit, or on the fourteenth or eighth lunar day, this should be done.
With rice grains moistened with water, placed beside blazing fire, this offering is to be made.
You are accomplishment for those who seek success; you are nourishment for those who desire strength.
Among relatives, friends, and groups of well-wishers, as well as among brahmins and servants,
Having recited this, the vessel should be given to a foremost brahmin.
Hearing the words of Vasiṣṭha, she acted accordingly.
And this Draupadī, O Pārtha, became your beloved wife.
She is Satī, Śacī, Svāhā, Sāvitrī, Bhū, and Arundhatī.
By her, the vessel is sustained; by her, this entire world exists.
Having heard this from Maitreya, his mind became delighted.
On the occasion of giving food, I have described the gift of the vessel.
Those who give to the twice-born a broad-mouthed vessel filled with rice, made of sweet clay,
Thus, in the Śrī Bhaviṣya Mahāpurāṇa, in the Uttaraparvan, in the dialogue between Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Yudhiṣṭhira, the one hundred seventieth chapter named 'Description of the Rite of Giving the Vessel' is concluded.
