प्राप्तकामैर्नरैः पार्थ सदा सेव्यो गृहाश्रमः
O Partha, the householder's stage is always to be served by those whose desires have been fulfilled.
न लोक पंक्तिर्न यशः प्राप्यते त्रिदशैरपि
Not even the gods can attain the succession of worlds or fame.
प्रसार्य पादौ यद्रात्रौ स्वगृहे स्वपतां सुखम्
The happiness of sleeping at night in one's own house, stretching out one's feet—
अपि शाकं पचानस्य स्वगृहे परमं सुखम्
Even for one who cooks only vegetables, the supreme happiness is in one's own home.
भवनं ब्राह्मणे देयं भव्यभूतिमभीप्सता 4.168.
A dwelling should be given to a Brahmin by one who desires auspicious prosperity.
शुभं कमठपृष्ठाभं भाभासितदिगंतरम्
A beautiful house, resembling the back of a tortoise, with its directions shining brightly—
दद्यादनंतफलदं शैववैष्णवयोगिनाम्
One should give a house that grants endless fruit to Shaivas, Vaishnavas, and yogis.
दीनानाथजलार्थाय कृतं किं न कृतं भवेत्
For the sake of the poor, the helpless, and those seeking water, what is done is never wasted.
कुढ्यस्तंभगवाक्षाढयान्विचित्रान्बहुभूमिकान्
With walls, pillars, and windows, adorned in various ways, with many stories—
सुधाधवलितान्रम्यान्विस्तीर्णांगणवाटिकान्
Beautiful, whitened with plaster, with spacious courtyards and gardens—
लोहोपस्करसंपूर्णांस्ता म्रोपस्करसंयुतान्
Filled with iron implements, and furnished with copper utensils—
रत्नोपस्करसंयुक्तान्कांस्योपस्करमंडितान्
Equipped with jeweled implements, adorned with bronze utensils—
वंशोपस्करसंकीर्णान्काष्ठोपस्कर बृंहितान्
Enriched with bamboo implements, enhanced with wooden furnishings—
धर्मोपस्करसंभारशणवल्कलराजितान्
Supplied with implements for dharma, adorned with mats of bark and cloth—
सप्तधातुमयं भांडं यत्तद्रत्नसमुद्भवम् 4.168.
A vessel made of seven metals, which is produced from gems—
गोमहिष्यश्ववृषभप्रेष्यवेश्यागणान्वितान्
Accompanied by herds of cows, buffaloes, horses, bulls, servants, and courtesans—
संपूर्णान्सर्वधान्यैस्तु घृततैलगुडादिभिः
Filled completely with all kinds of grains, along with ghee, oil, jaggery, and the like,
निष्पावाढक्यचणककुलत्थाणुमसूरकैः
With split pulses, old chickpeas, horse gram, ground lentils, and beans,
लवणार्द्रकखर्जूरद्राक्षाजीरकधान्यकैः
With salt, fresh ginger, dates, raisins, cumin, and grains,
धूपोपस्करपर्युप्ततूलीगण्डोपधानकैः
With incense materials, cotton, and cushions for support,
पिठरोलूखलस्थालीशूर्पदर्पणपत्रकैः
With baskets, mortars, cooking pots, winnowing baskets, mirrors, and plates,
गृहाटवाटकादर्वीदृषल्लोष्टकहस्तकैः
With houses, gardens, firewood, pestles, clods of earth, and hand tools,
कंडणी पेषणी चुल्ली उदकुम्भी प्रमार्जनी
With chopping boards, grinding stones, stoves, water jars, and cleaning tools,
इत्येवमादिभिः पूर्णान्गृहान्दद्याद्द्विजातिषु
Thus, with such items, one should give fully furnished houses to the twice-born,
शुभेऽह्नि विप्रकथिते दानकालः प्रशस्यते 4.168.
On an auspicious day, as prescribed by the learned, the time for giving is praised.
कुलशीलसमायुक्तान्गृहसंख्यान्निमंत्रयेत्
He should invite as many families as there are houses, who are endowed with good lineage and conduct.
गृहस्थधर्मनिरताञ्छांतान्दांताञ्जितेंद्रियान्
Those devoted to the duties of a householder, peaceful, self-restrained, and with controlled senses,
सुगंधिस्रग्धरान्कृत्वा शांतिकर्मणि योजयेत्
Having adorned them with fragrant garlands, he should engage them in rites for peace.
ग्रहयज्ञः प्रकर्तव्यस्तुष्टिपुष्टिकरः सदा
A ritual for the planets should be performed, which always brings satisfaction and nourishment.
वास्तुपूजा प्रकर्तव्या दिक्षु भूतबलिं क्षिपेत्
The worship of the dwelling should be performed, and offerings to the spirits should be placed in the directions.
