तल्लिङ्गमंत्रैर्होमश्च कर्तव्यो ज्वलितेऽनले
The fire offering should be performed with the mantras pertaining to that liṅga, in a blazing fire.
पूजयित्वा विधानेन मन्त्रमेतमुदीरयेत् जगतः संप्रवृद्धासि त्वामतः प्रार्थये स्थिताम्
Having worshipped according to the procedure, one should recite this mantra: 'You have grown over the world; therefore, I pray to you who are established.'
वाङ्मनःकायजनितं यत्किञ्चिन्मम दुष्कृतम्
Whatever wrong I have committed by speech, mind, or body—
एवमुच्चार्य तां दद्याद्ब्राह्मणाय कुटुम्बिने
Having uttered thus, one should give (the gift) to a householder brāhmaṇa.
दुष्टप्रतिग्रहहतो विप्रो भवति पातकी
A brāhmaṇa who accepts a wicked gift becomes a sinner.
नो दद्याद्दक्षिणाहीनां दातव्या सा विधानतः
One should not give a gift without the prescribed offering; it must be given according to the rule.
पुरा दत्तमिदं दानं गौर्या शंकरकाम्यया
Formerly, this gift was given by Gaurī out of devotion to Śaṅkara.
नलेन दत्तमेतद्धि राज्यं कृत्वा दिवं गतः
This was given by Nala, who, having ruled the kingdom, went to heaven.
दानस्यास्य प्रभावेण पुत्रा बहुबलान्विताः 4.163.
By the power of this gift, his sons became endowed with great strength.
दत्त्वा दानं शुभां कांतिं विपुलां च तथा श्रियम् अहोरात्रकृतात्पापान्मुच्यते नात्र संशयः
Having given the gift, one attains auspicious radiance and abundant prosperity, and is freed from sins committed day and night—of this there is no doubt.
मेषी विशेषकलुषापहरातिशस्ता दाने सदैव रसधातुयुता सधान्या
A sheep, especially one that is pure and excellent, always endowed with sap and grain, is best for giving as a gift.
भूमिदानवर्णनम् ये प्रयच्छंति विप्रेभ्यो भूमिदानं सदक्षिणम्
Those who give land as a gift to brāhmaṇas, along with the proper offering—
श्रोत्रियाय दरिद्राय अग्निहोत्ररताय च
To a learned, poor brāhmaṇa who is devoted to the Agnihotra—
सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो दीप्यमानो रविर्यथा
Are freed from all sins and shine like the sun.
विमानैर्भास्वरैर्दिव्यैर्विष्णुलोकं स गच्छति
He goes to the world of Vishnu in radiant, divine aerial vehicles.
तत्र दिव्यांगनाभिश्च सेव्यमानो यथासुखम्
There, attended by celestial maidens, he enjoys as he wishes.
यावद्धारयते लोकान्भूरंकुरसमुद्भवा
As long as the worlds, sprung from the sprout of earth, endure.
नहि भूमिप्रदानाद्वै दानमन्यद्विशिष्यते
Indeed, no gift surpasses the giving of land.
दानान्यन्यानि क्षीयंते कालेन पुरुषर्षभ
Other gifts diminish with time, O best of men.
सर्वपापानि क्षीयंते कालयोगक्रमेण तु
All sins are worn away in due course of time.
ब्राह्मणाय सुशीलाय भूमिं दत्त्वा तु यो नरः 4.164.
The man who gives land to a virtuous Brahmin—
हलकृष्टां महीं कृत्वा सबीजां सस्यमालिनीम्
Having made the earth ploughed, with seed and rich with crops,
धनं धान्यं हिरण्यं च रत्नान्याभरणानि च
Wealth, grain, gold, as well as jewels and ornaments,
सागरान्सरितः शैलान्समानि विषमाणि च
Oceans, rivers, mountains, the even and the uneven—
ओषधीः क्षीरसंपन्ना नानापुष्पफलोपगाः
Medicinal plants rich in sap, bearing various flowers and fruits,
अग्निष्टोमादिभिर्यज्ञैर्ये यजंति सदक्षिणैः
Those who worship with sacrifices like Agnishtoma, always with proper gifts,
श्रोत्रियाय महीं दत्त्वा ये हरंति न मानवाः
Those men who, having given land to a learned Brahmin, do not take it back,
सस्यपूर्णां महीं यस्तु श्रोत्रियाय प्रयच्छति
He who gives land full of crops to a learned Brahmin,
यत्किंचित्कुरुते पापं पुरुषो वृत्तिकर्शितः
Whatever sin a man, afflicted by livelihood, may commit,
सुवर्णानां सहस्रेण यत्पुण्यं समुदाहृतम्
The merit declared for a thousand pieces of gold—
