स्योना पृथिवि मंत्रेण गौर्वत्ससहिता नवा
With the mantra 'Syonā pṛthivi', a new cow together with her calf
या ते सरस्वती देवी विष्णुना च तथा मही
—that goddess Sarasvati, and likewise the earth with Vishnu—
यावद्वत्सस्यद्वौ पादौ शिरश्चैव प्रदृश्यते तस्मिन्काले प्रदातव्या ब्राह्मणाय वसुंधरे
When both feet and the head of the calf become visible, at that moment, O Earth, she should be given to the Brahmin.
सुवर्णशृंगीं रौप्यखुरां कास्यदोहां सताम्रकाम् वस्त्राक्षतैः समभ्यर्च्य ब्राह्मणाय समर्पयेत्
A cow with golden horns, silver hooves, a bronze milk-pail, and copper vessels, having been properly adorned with cloth and unbroken grains, should be presented to the Brahmin.
सुवर्णस्य सहस्रेण तदर्धेनापि भामिनि
With a thousand pieces of gold, or even half that, O beautiful one,
यथा शक्त्या प्रदातव्या वित्तशाठ्यविवर्जितैः गृहाणेमां महाधेनुं भव भ्राता ममाशु वै
It should be given according to one's ability, without miserliness regarding wealth: 'Accept this great cow from me, become my brother at once.'
इरावती धेनुमती जाह्नवी तदनन्तरम्
Irāvatī, Dhenumatī, and then Jāhnavī—
भवतात्स्वस्ति मे नित्यं सुखं चानुत्तमं तथा 4.161.
May there always be well-being for me, and likewise unsurpassed happiness.
कोऽदादिति च वै मंत्रो जपितव्यो द्विजेन च
The mantra 'Ko'dāditi' should be recited by the twice-born.
एवं प्रसूयमानां गां यो ददाति वसुन्धरे रत्नपूर्णा भवेद्दत्ता पृथिवी नात्र संशयः
In this way, whoever gives a cow that is bearing a calf, O Earth, truly gives the earth filled with jewels—of this there is no doubt.
प्रतप्तजांबूनदतुल्यवर्णां महानितंबां तनुवृत्तमध्याम्
Her complexion rivals the radiant, molten gold of the Jambū river; her hips are broad, and her waist is slender and graceful.
प्रातरुत्थाय यो भक्त्या धेनुकल्पं नरो भुवि
Whoever, rising in the morning with devotion, recites the account of the cow on earth,
त्रिकालं पठते यस्तु पापं वर्षशतोद्भवम्
and whoever recites this three times a day destroys sins accumulated over a hundred years.
श्राद्धकाले पठेद्यस्तु इदं पावनमुत्तमम्
Whoever recites this most purifying text at the time of śrāddha,
अमावास्यां च यो विद्वान्द्विजानामग्रतः पठेत्
and the learned one who recites it on the new moon day before the brāhmaṇas,
यश्चैतत्छृणुयात्पुण्यं तद्गतेनांतरात्मना
and whoever listens to this sacred account with a mind absorbed in its meaning,
इदं रहस्यं राजेन्द्र वराहमुखनिर्गतम्
O king, this is the secret that has emerged from the mouth of Varāha.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे कपिलादानमाहात्म्यवर्णनं नामैकषष्ट्युत्तरशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred sixty-first chapter, entitled 'The Greatness of the Gift of the Kapila Cow,' in the dialogue between Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Yudhiṣṭhira, in the Uttaraparvan of the Śrī Bhaviṣya Mahāpurāṇa.
महिषीदानव्रतविधिवर्णनम् पुण्यं पापविनाशं च आयुष्यं सर्वकामदम्
The description of the vow and procedure for gifting a royal cow: it brings merit, destroys sin, grants long life, and fulfills all desires.
चन्द्रसूर्यग्रहे पुण्ये कार्त्तिक्यामयने तथा
This should be performed during auspicious occasions such as lunar or solar eclipses, during the Kārttika season, or at the solstice.
यदा वा जायते चित्तं वित्तं च कुरुनन्दन
Or, O descendant of the Kurus, whenever one feels inspired in mind or has the means.
सुपयोधरशोभाढ्या सुशृंगी सुखुरा तथा
She should be endowed with beautiful, full udders, fine horns, and a pleasing tail.
सुवर्णशृङ्गतिलका घंटाभरणभूषिता
She should have golden-tipped horns and be adorned with bell ornaments.
पिण्याकपिटिकोपेता सहिरण्या च शक्तितः
She should be provided with a cake of oil-cake and molasses, and, according to one's ability, with gold.
पुराणपाठके तद्वज्ज्योतिःशास्त्रविदे तथा
This should be given to a reciter of the Purāṇas or, likewise, to one learned in astrology.
द्रव्यैरेभिः समायुक्तां पुण्येऽह्नि विधिपूर्वकम्
She should be endowed with these articles and given on an auspicious day, following the prescribed rites.
इन्द्रादिलोकपालानां या राजमहिषी शुभा
She is like the auspicious royal cow of the guardians of the worlds, such as Indra.
धर्मराजस्य साहाय्ये यस्याः पुत्रः प्रतिष्ठितः 4.162.
By whose assistance the son of the Lord of Dharma is established.
(इति दानमंत्रः) दद्यात्प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य ब्राह्मणे तां पयस्विनीम्
Having circumambulated, one should give that milch buffalo to a Brahmin.
एवं दत्त्वा विधानेन ब्राह्मणस्य गृहं नयेत्
Having given in this prescribed manner, one should accompany the Brahmin to his house.
