अनुव्रजेच्च गच्छंतं पदान्यष्टौ नराधिप
If one follows a departing king for eight steps, O ruler of men,
सर्वकामसमृद्धात्मा स्वर्गलोकं स गच्छति
with a mind fulfilled in all desires, he attains the world of heaven.
सप्त जन्मकृतात्पापान्मोचयत्यवनीपते
He frees himself from sins committed over seven births, O lord of the earth.
फलमाप्नोति राजेन्द्र दक्षायैवं जगौ हरिः
This is the fruit, O king of kings, as Hari thus spoke to Daksha.
भवत्यसौ पापहरा यावदिंद्राश्चतुर्दश
This act becomes a destroyer of sin for as long as the fourteen Indras exist.
प्रायश्चित्तमिदं प्रोक्तमनुतापोपबृंहितम्
This expiation has been declared, enhanced by repentance.
ब्राह्मणैः क्षत्रियैर्वैश्यैः शूद्रैश्चान्यैश्च मानवैः
By Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, Shudras, and other humans,
गोभ्योधिकं जगति नापरमस्तिकिञ्चिद्दानं पवित्रमिति शास्त्रविदो वदंति
Those learned in scripture say: In this world, there is no gift purer than that of cows.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे प्रत्यक्षधेनुदानव्रत विधिवर्णनं नामैकपंचाशदुत्तरशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred and fifty-first chapter, entitled 'The Description of the Rite of Direct Cow-Giving,' in the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Yudhishthira, in the Uttara Parva of the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana.
धेनुदानव्रतविधिवर्णनम् विशेषविधिना याश्च देयाः कामानभीप्सुभिः
Now, the description of the rite of cow-giving: those which are to be given with special procedures by those not desiring personal gain.
कामं यद्दीयते दानं समग्रं तत्सुखावहम्
Whatever gift is given willingly and in full, that brings happiness.
तस्मान्न दक्षिणाहीनं विधानविकलं तथा
Therefore, one should not give a gift lacking a proper fee or incomplete in procedure.
अन्यथा दीयमानं तदहंकाराय केवलम्
Otherwise, if given differently, it is only for pride.
तिलधेनुं प्रवक्ष्यामि शृणु पार्थिवसत्तम
I will now describe the sesame-cow; listen, O best of kings.
यां दत्त्वा ब्रह्महा गोघ्नः पितृहा गुरुतल्पगः
By giving this, even a killer of a Brahmin, a slayer of cows, a killer of parents, or one who has violated the teacher's bed,
महापातकयुक्तश्च संयुक्तश्चोपपातकैः
or one burdened with great sins and associated with secondary sins,
अनुलिप्ते महीपृष्ठे कृष्णाजिनसमावृते
on earth smeared and covered with a black antelope skin,
तिलाः श्वेतास्तिलाः कृष्णास्तिला गोमूत्रवर्णकाः
white sesame, black sesame, and sesame the color of cow's urine—
द्रोणस्य वत्सकं कुर्याच्चतुराढकिकां च गाम् 4.152.
One should make a calf for Droṇa and a cow of four āḍhakas in measure.
कार्या शर्करया जिह्वा गुडेनास्यं च कम्बलः
The tongue should be made of sugar, the mouth of jaggery, and the covering of a blanket.
प्रशस्तपत्रश्रवणां फलदंतवतीं शुभाम्
She should have excellent leaves for ears, be fruitful, and auspicious with teeth.
सितवस्त्रशिरालम्बां सितसर्षपरोमिकाम्
She should be adorned with white cloth, have a white thread for a tail, and white mustard seeds for hair.
ईदृक्संस्थानसम्पन्नां कृत्वा श्रद्धासमन्वितः
Having prepared her in this manner, endowed with such form, one should do so with faith.
या लक्ष्मीः सर्वभूतानां या वै देवेष्ववस्थिता
That Lakṣmī who abides in all beings and who indeed resides among the gods—
ततः प्रदक्षिणां कृत्वा पूजयित्वा प्रणम्य च
After circumambulating, worshipping, and bowing to her,
अनेन विधिना दत्त्वा तिलधेनुं नराधिप
O king, having given the sesame cow in this manner,
यश्च गृह्णाति विधिवद्दीयमानां प्रमोदते
And whoever receives her properly given and rejoices,
तेपि दोषविनिर्मुक्ता ब्रह्मलोकं व्रजंति ते
They too, freed from faults, attain the world of Brahma.
धेनुं तिलमयीं दत्त्वा न शोचति कृताकृते 4.152.
Having given a cow made of sesame, one does not grieve for what is done or not done.
एकाहमथ वा राजन्न युच्छेदन्तरात्मना
O king, even for a single day, one should not waver in the heart.
