चण्डीशश्च गणेशश्च नंदिनो गुह एव च
Caṇḍīśa, Gaṇeśa, Nandī, and Guha as well,
शृणु देवि कथां रम्यां मम मानससंस्थिताम्
Listen, O goddess, to the delightful story residing in my mind.
अष्टाहे नेत्र उन्मील्य दृष्ट्वा निद्रागतां शिवाम्
After eight days, opening his eyes, he saw Śivā who had entered sleep.
कियती ते श्रुता गाथा श्रुत्वाह जगदंबिका
How many verses have you heard? Hearing this, Jagadambikā spoke.
कोटरस्थः शुकः श्रुत्वा चिरंजीवत्वमागतः
The parrot, dwelling in the hollow, having heard, attained longevity.
स्थित्वा शिवस्य सदने मम ध्यानपरोऽभवत्
Remaining in Śiva's abode, he became absorbed in my meditation.
तेन प्राप्तं भागवतं माहात्म्यं चास्य दुर्लभम्
By him, the greatness of the Bhāgavata was attained, and its rarity as well.
नर्मदाकूलमासाद्य श्रावयस्व कथां शुभाम् 3.2.32.
Having reached the bank of the Narmadā, narrate the auspicious story.
सत्पात्राय प्रदातव्यं विष्णुभक्ताय धीमते
It should be given to a worthy recipient, to a wise devotee of Vishnu.
इत्युक्त्वांतर्दधे देवो बोपदेवः प्रसन्नधीः
Having spoken thus, the god Bopadeva, his mind serene, disappeared.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराणे प्रतिसर्गपर्वणि चतुर्युगखण्डापरपर्याये कलियुगीयेतिहाससमुच्चये द्वात्रिंशत्तमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the thirty-second chapter in the compendium of the history of the Kali Age, in the section called Caturyuga-khanda-aparaparyaya, within the Pratisarga Parva of the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana.
बहुत्वात्सर्ववेदानां श्रोतुमिच्छामहे वयम्
Because of the vastness of all the Vedas, we wish to hear them.
केन स्तोत्रेण वेदानां पाठस्य फलमाप्नुयात्
By which hymn may one obtain the fruit of reciting the Vedas?
व्याधकर्मेति विख्यातो ब्राह्मण्यां शूद्रतोऽभवत्
Known as Vyadhakarma, he was born from a Shudra in a Brahmin woman.
त्रिपाठिनो द्विजस्यैव भार्या नाम्ना हि कामिनी
The wife of the threefold-reciting twice-born, by name Kamini.
द्विजस्सप्तशतीपाठे वृत्त्यर्थी कर्हिचिद्गतः
The twice-born, seeking livelihood, once went to recite the Saptashati.
तत्र मासो गतः कालो नाययौ स स्वमंदिरम्
There, a month passed; time went by, and he did not return to his own house.
दृष्ट्वा निषादं सबलं काष्ठभारोपजीविनम्
Seeing the Nishada, strong, making a living by carrying wood,
तदा गर्भं दधौ सा च व्याधिवीर्येण संचि तम्
Then she conceived, having received the seed of the hunter.
द्वादशाब्दे गते काले स धूर्तो वेदवर्जितः
When twelve years had passed, that wicked one, devoid of Vedic knowledge,
निष्कासितौ द्विजेनैव मातृपुत्रौ द्विजाधमौ 3.2.33.
The twice-born himself expelled the mother and son, both fallen from the twice-born.
प्रत्यहं चंडिकापाठं कृत्वा विंध्यगिरौ वसन्
Every day, reciting the Candika hymn, he dwelt on Mount Vindhya.
निषादस्य गृहे चोभौ वने गत्वोषतुर्मुदा
Both stayed happily in the house of the Nishada, having gone to the forest.
व्याधकर्मा तु चौर्येण पितृमातृप्रियंकरः
Engaged in the work of a hunter, by theft he pleased his father and mother.
चौरवृत्तिपरो धूर्तः स्त्रिया भूषणमाहरत्
Addicted to a life of theft, the wicked one brought ornaments for a woman.
कदाचित्प्राप्तवांस्तत्र द्विजवस्त्रसमुद्गतम्
Once, he obtained there garments belonging to a twice-born.
पाठपुण्यप्रभावेण धर्मबुद्धिस्ततोऽभवत्
By the power of reciting sacred texts, he then developed a mind devoted to righteousness.
शिष्यत्वमगमत्तत्राक्षरमैशं जजाप ह
There, he became a disciple and chanted the Maisha syllable.
पठित्वाक्षरमालां च जजापादिचरित्रकम्
Having recited the garland of syllables, he chanted the account of Adi’s deeds.
अन्नपूर्णां महादेवीं तुष्टाव परया मुदा 3.2.33.
With supreme joy, he praised Annapurna, the great goddess.
