वस्त्रायुधगवाश्वेषु मणिकेशविनाशने
At the loss of garments, weapons, cows, horses, jewels, or hair.
वेश्मनश्च तुलाभंगे गर्भेष्वश्वतरीषु च
When the scales of the house break, or in the case of pregnancies among she-mules.
सर्वाणि दुर्निमित्तानि प्रशमं यान्ति सर्वथा
All these inauspicious omens are completely pacified.
चतुर्वेदास्त्रिवेदाश्च द्विवेदाश्चापि पांडव 4.143.
O Pandava, the knower of the four Vedas, three Vedas, and even two Vedas.
शुचयः श्रुतसंपन्ना जपहोमपरायणाः
Pure in conduct, endowed with knowledge of the scriptures, devoted to recitation and sacrificial offerings—
पूर्वमाराध्य मंत्रैस्तु प्रारभेत क्रियां ततः
Having first worshipped with mantras, one should then begin the ritual action.
तन्मध्ये वेदिकां कुर्याच्चतुर्हस्त प्रमाणतः
In the midst of that, one should construct an altar measuring four cubits.
मेखलात्रयसंयुक्तं योन्या चापि विभूषितम्
Adorned with three girdles and also decorated with a yoni symbol.
गोमयेनोपलिप्ते च मंडपे तु द्विजातयः
In a pavilion smeared with cow dung, the twice-born should assemble.
ततश्च पञ्च कलशांस्तस्यां वेद्यां नियोजयेत्
Then, five pots should be placed upon that altar.
अष्टास्रालंकृते पद्मे चूतपल्लवशोभिते
In a lotus with eight petals, adorned and beautified with mango shoots.
औषधीः पञ्चरत्नानि रोचनां चन्दनं तथा
Medicinal herbs, the five gems, rocanā, and also sandalwood—
अपामार्गं फलवतीं न्यग्रोधोदुंबरौ तथा
Apāmārga, fruit-bearing plants, and likewise banyan and udumbara trees—
हस्तिदंतमृदं चैव कोणकुम्भेषु निक्षिपेत् 4.143.
Ivory and clay should be placed in the corner pots.
कूर्चं वाचमितीदं च वह्निकुम्भाभिमन्त्रणम्
A bundle of sacred grass, the Vācamiti mantra—this is the consecration for the fire pot.
ईशावास्यं चतुर्थस्य कुम्भस्य चाभिमंत्रणम्
The Īśāvāsya hymn is the consecration for the fourth pot.
गंधपुष्पाक्षतैर्वस्त्रैर्नैवैद्यैर्घृतपाचितैः
With fragrant substances, flowers, unbroken rice, cloths, and offerings cooked in ghee—
स्वस्तिवाचनकं चैव कारयेत्तदनंतरम्
Then, one should have the recitation of auspicious words performed.
अग्निं दूतमिति ह्यग्निं पूर्वमेव निधापयेत्
Agni is the messenger—thus, the fire should first be established.
कपोतसुप्रणीतेन मंत्रेण विनिशेषयेत्
With the mantra for properly leading the pigeon, one should complete the rite.
अथ चासादयेद्द्रव्यं यथावत्सप्रयोजनम्
Then, one should obtain the required materials, each according to its purpose.
अभिघार्याथ संसिद्धं तथा संस्थापयेद्भुवि
Having purified them, one should then arrange them properly on the ground.
पालाशी समिधः सप्त तथा सप्तेति दापयेत्
He should cause seven pieces of palāśa wood to be brought, and likewise another seven.
जुहुयादाहुतीः सप्त जातवेदस इत्यृचा 4.143.
He should offer seven oblations with the verse 'jātavedasa', O King.
तरत्समंदी सूक्तेन चतस्रो जुहुयात्ततः
Then, with the Taratsama hymn, he should offer four oblations.
इदं विष्णुस्ततः सप्त जुहुयादाहुतीर्नृप
After that, with the verse 'idaṃ viṣṇuḥ', he should offer seven oblations, O King.
यत्कर्मणैति जुहुयात्ततः स्विष्टकृतं पुनः
Then, for whatever act is being performed, he should again offer the sviṣṭakṛt oblation.
प्रायश्चित्तं ततो हुत्वा होमकर्म समापयेत्
After performing the expiatory offering, he should complete the homa ritual.
यजमानस्य कर्तव्यो ह्यभिषेको द्विजोत्तमैः
The abhiṣeka (anointing) of the yajamāna should be performed by the foremost twice-born.
वेदिमध्यगतं कृत्वा दुर्निमित्तप्रशांतये
Placing him in the center of the altar, for the pacification of inauspicious omens.
