ग्रहयज्ञस्त्रिधा प्रोक्तः पुराणश्रुतिकोविदैः
The sacrifice to the planets is declared to be threefold by those skilled in the Puranas and Vedas.
तृतीयः कोटिहोमस्तु सर्वकामफलप्रदः
The third is the koti-homa, which grants the fruits of all desires.
तस्य तावद्विधिं वक्ष्ये पुराणश्रुतिभाषितम्
Now I shall describe its procedure, as spoken in the Puranas and Vedas.
कुर्याद्विधानतो वेदिं वितस्त्युच्छ्रयसंयुताम्
One should properly construct the altar, measuring it by a span.
अग्निप्रणयनं कृत्वा तस्यामावाहयेत्सुरान्
Having brought forth the fire, one should invoke the deities there.
सूर्यः सोमो महीपुत्रो बुधो जीवः सितोर्कजः 4.141.
The Sun, the Moon, the son of the Earth, Mercury, Jiva, and the son of the pale one—
ताम्रकात्स्फटिकाद्रक्तचन्दनात्स्वर्णजावुभौ
From copper, crystal, red sandalwood, and gold, both should be made.
मध्ये तु भास्करं विद्याल्लोहितं दक्षिणेन तु
In the center, one should know the Sun to be placed, and the red one to the south.
पूर्वेण भार्गवं विद्यात्सोमं दक्षिणपूर्वके
To the east, one should know Bhārgava is placed, and Soma in the southeast.
राजामात्यान्महाराज तंडुलैः स्थापयेदथ
O great king, the king and his ministers should be established there with rice grains.
स्कन्दमङ्गारकस्यापि बुधस्य च तथा हरिम्
Skanda, Maṅgala, and likewise Budha and Hari should be placed.
शनैश्चरस्य तु यमं राहोः कालं तथैव च
For Śanaiścara, Yama; for Rāhu, Kāla likewise.
अग्निरापः क्षितिर्विष्णुरिन्द्रः सौवर्णदेवताः
Agni, Waters, Earth, Viṣṇu, Indra, and the deities of gold.
विनायकं तथा दुर्गां वायुमाकाशमेव च
Also Vināyaka, Durgā, Vāyu, and likewise Ākāśa.
आवाहयेद्व्याहृतिभिस्तथैवाश्विकुमारकौ
One should invoke with the vyāhṛtis, and likewise the Aśvins and Kumāra.
सोमशुक्रौ यथाश्वेतौ बुधजीवौ च पिङ्ग लौ 4.141.
Soma and Śukra are white as appropriate, Budha and Jīva are tawny.
ग्रहवर्णानि देयानि वासांसि कुसुमानि च
Garments and flowers of the colors of the planets should be given.
गुडौदनं रवेर्दद्यात्सोमाय घृतपायसम्
One should offer jaggery rice to Ravi, and ghee-cooked rice pudding to Soma.
दध्यन्नं गुरवे दद्याच्छक्राय तु घृतौदनम्
One should give curd rice to Guru, and ghee rice to Śakra.
चित्रौदनं केतवे च सर्वान्भक्ष्यैरथार्चयेत्
Citron rice to Ketu, and then worship all with various foods.
चूत पल्लवसंपन्नं फलवस्त्रयुगान्वितम्
A vessel adorned with mango leaves, together with fruits and pairs of garments.
स्थापयेदव्रणं कुंभं वरुणं तत्र विन्यसेत्
One should place an unbroken pot and install Varuṇa there.
गजाश्वरथ्यावल्मीकात्संगमाद्धृदगोकुलात्
From the elephant, horse, street, anthill, confluence, and from the heart of the cowherds’ village.
स्नानार्थं विन्यसेत्तत्र यजमानस्य धर्मवित्
For the purpose of bathing, the knower of dharma should place it there for the sacrificer.
आयांतु यजमानस्य दुरितक्षयकारकाः
Let those who remove the sins of the sacrificer come forth.
होमं समारभेत्सर्पिर्यवव्रीहितिलादिना 4.141.
He should begin the offering with clarified butter, barley, rice, sesame, and the like.
उदुंबर शमीदूर्वाकुशाश्च समिधः क्रमात्
Udumbara, Sami, Durva, and Kusha should be used as kindling in order.
होतव्या मधुसर्पिभ्यां दध्ना वा पायसेन वा
The offerings should be made with honey and ghee, or with curd, or with milk-rice.
कल्प्यंते समिधः प्राज्ञैः सर्वकर्मसु सर्वदा
The wise always prepare the kindling for all rituals.
ऽ स्वेन स्वेनैव मंत्रेण होतव्याः समिधः पृथक्
Each kindling stick should be offered separately with its own mantra.
