विष्णुना वसुधा लब्धा प्रीतेन बलये पुनः
The earth was regained by Viṣṇu, pleased, for Bali once again.
ततः प्रभृति राजेन्द्र प्रवृत्ता कौमुदी पुनः 4.140.
From that time onward, O king, the festival of Kaumudī began again.
लोकशोकहरी काम्या धनपुष्टिसुखावहा
It removes the sorrows of people, is desirable, and brings wealth, nourishment, and happiness.
धातुज्ञैर्नैगमज्ञैश्च तेनैषा कौमुदी स्मृता
By those who know the elements and by merchants, therefore this is called Kaumudī.
हृष्टास्तुष्टाः सुखायत्तास्तेनैषा कौमुदी स्मृता
Because they are joyful, satisfied, and dependent on happiness, therefore this is called Kaumudī.
अर्थार्थे पार्थ भूमौ च तेनैषा कौमुदी स्मृता
For the sake of wealth, O Pārtha, and on earth, therefore this is called Kaumudī.
दत्तं दानवराजस्य आदर्शमिव भूतले
The gift to the king of the Dānavas is like a mirror on the earth.
कुत ईति भयं तत्र नास्ति मृत्युकृतं भयम्
There, fear does not arise, nor is there fear caused by death.
नीरुजश्च जनाः सर्वे सर्वोपद्रववर्जिताः
All people will be free from disease and untouched by any calamity.
यो यादृशेन भावेन तिष्ठत्यस्यां युधिष्ठिर
O Yudhishthira, as one stands with whatever disposition in this world,
रुदिते रोदिति वर्षं हृष्टो वर्षं प्रहृष्यति
If one weeps, it rains; if one rejoices, it rains joyfully.
तस्मात्प्रहृष्टैस्तुष्टैश्च कर्तव्या कौमुदी नरैः 4.140.
Therefore, the festival of lights should be performed by people who are joyful and content.
उपशमितमेघनादं प्रज्वलितदशाननं रमितरामम्
When the thunder of clouds has ceased, and the ten-headed one blazes, delighting Rama,
कूष्माण्डादानरम्यं कुवलयखण्डैश्च धातुकाभद्रम्
With offerings of gourds and delightful pieces of blue lotus, and with minerals that bring good fortune,
दीपोत्सवे जनितसर्वजनप्रमोदां कुर्वंति ये सुमनसो बलिराजपूजाम्
Those noble-minded ones who, during the festival of lamps, perform the worship of King Bali, bring joy to all people.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरप र्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे दीपालिकोत्सववर्णनं नाम चत्वारिंशदुत्तरशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred fortieth chapter, named 'Description of the Festival of Lamps,' in the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Yudhishthira in the Uttara Parva of the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana.
नवग्रहलक्षहोमविधिवर्णनम् सर्वकामाप्तये कृत्यं कथं शांतिकपौष्टिकम्
How should one perform the rites for appeasement and nourishment, and for the fulfillment of all desires?
दृष्ट्यायुः पुष्टिकामो वा तथैवाभिचरन्पुनः
Whether one seeks long life, nourishment, or acts with other intentions,
सर्वशास्त्राण्यनुक्रम्य संक्षिप्य ग्रन्थविस्तरम्
Having examined all the scriptures and summarized the extensive texts,
पुण्येऽह्नि विप्रकथिते कृत्वा ब्राह्मणवाचनम्
On an auspicious day, after consulting the learned, and having recited the words of the Brahmins,
ग्रहयज्ञस्त्रिधा प्रोक्तः पुराणश्रुतिकोविदैः
The sacrifice to the planets is declared to be threefold by those skilled in the Puranas and Vedas.
तृतीयः कोटिहोमस्तु सर्वकामफलप्रदः
The third is the koti-homa, which grants the fruits of all desires.
तस्य तावद्विधिं वक्ष्ये पुराणश्रुतिभाषितम्
Now I shall describe its procedure, as spoken in the Puranas and Vedas.
कुर्याद्विधानतो वेदिं वितस्त्युच्छ्रयसंयुताम्
One should properly construct the altar, measuring it by a span.
अग्निप्रणयनं कृत्वा तस्यामावाहयेत्सुरान्
Having brought forth the fire, one should invoke the deities there.
सूर्यः सोमो महीपुत्रो बुधो जीवः सितोर्कजः 4.141.
The Sun, the Moon, the son of the Earth, Mercury, Jiva, and the son of the pale one—
ताम्रकात्स्फटिकाद्रक्तचन्दनात्स्वर्णजावुभौ
From copper, crystal, red sandalwood, and gold, both should be made.
मध्ये तु भास्करं विद्याल्लोहितं दक्षिणेन तु
In the center, one should know the Sun to be placed, and the red one to the south.
पूर्वेण भार्गवं विद्यात्सोमं दक्षिणपूर्वके
To the east, one should know Bhārgava is placed, and Soma in the southeast.
राजामात्यान्महाराज तंडुलैः स्थापयेदथ
O great king, the king and his ministers should be established there with rice grains.
