मंचारूढः स्वयं पश्येन्नटनर्तकचारणान्
Seated upon a platform, he himself should watch dancers, actors, and bards.
दिष्ट्या कार्यं पयोज्योतिरुक्तिप्रत्युक्तिका वदेत् 4.140.
By destiny, the task is accomplished; let one speak words of praise and reply.
मार्गपालीं प्रबध्नीयात्तुंगस्तंभेऽथ पादपे
One should tie the boundary marker to a tall post or tree.
पूजयित्वा गजान्वाजीन्सार्धे यामत्रये गते
Having worshipped elephants and horses, when the third watch of the night has passed.
कृते होमे द्विजेन्द्रैस्तु गृह्णीयान्मार्गपालिकाम्
When the sacrifice has been performed by the foremost twice-born, one should take the boundary marker.
स्वशक्त्यपेक्षया वापि गृह्णीयाद्वामभोजनैः
Or, according to one's ability, one may take it with offerings of food.
संतारयेत्स सकलं मार्गपालीं ददाति यः
Whoever gives the boundary marker causes all to cross safely.
मार्गपालीतलेनेत्थं हया गावो गजा वृषाः
By means of the boundary marker, thus, horses, cows, elephants, and bulls.
मार्गपालीं समुल्लंघ्य नीरुजः स्यात्सुखी सदा
Having crossed the boundary marker, one becomes free from disease and always happy.
पूजां कुर्यान्नरः साक्षाद्भूमौ मंडलके कृते
A man should perform worship directly upon the ground where the circle is made.
सर्वाभरणसंपूर्णं विंध्यावल्या सहासितम्
Adorned with all ornaments, smiling together with Vindhyāvali,
संपूर्णहृष्टवदनं किरीटोत्कटकुण्डलम् 4.140.
With a face full of joy, wearing a splendid crown and prominent earrings,
गृहस्य मध्ये शालायां विशालायां ततोऽर्चयेत्
In the middle of the house, in a spacious hall, one should then worship.
कमलैः कुमुदैः पुष्पैः कह्लारै रक्तकोत्पलैः
With lotuses, water-lilies, flowers, kahlāra blooms, and red water-lilies,
मद्यमांससुरालेह्यदीपवर्त्युपहारकैः
With offerings of wine, meat, liquor, sweets, lamps, and wicks,
बलिराज नमस्तुभ्यं विरोचनसुत प्रभो
O King Bali, salutations to you, lord, son of Virocana.
एवं पूजां नृपः कृत्वा रात्रौ जागरणं ततः
Having performed such worship, the king should then keep vigil at night.
लोकश्चापि गृहस्यांते शय्यायां शुक्लतंडुलैः
And the people, at the end of the house, on a bed, with white rice grains,
बलिमुद्दिश्य दीयंते दानानि कुरुनन्दन
Offer gifts dedicated to Bali, O descendant of Kuru.
यदस्यां दीयते दानं स्वल्पं वा यदि वा बहु
Whatever gift is given here, whether small or great,
विष्णुना वसुधा लब्धा प्रीतेन बलये पुनः
The earth was regained by Viṣṇu, pleased, for Bali once again.
ततः प्रभृति राजेन्द्र प्रवृत्ता कौमुदी पुनः 4.140.
From that time onward, O king, the festival of Kaumudī began again.
लोकशोकहरी काम्या धनपुष्टिसुखावहा
It removes the sorrows of people, is desirable, and brings wealth, nourishment, and happiness.
धातुज्ञैर्नैगमज्ञैश्च तेनैषा कौमुदी स्मृता
By those who know the elements and by merchants, therefore this is called Kaumudī.
हृष्टास्तुष्टाः सुखायत्तास्तेनैषा कौमुदी स्मृता
Because they are joyful, satisfied, and dependent on happiness, therefore this is called Kaumudī.
अर्थार्थे पार्थ भूमौ च तेनैषा कौमुदी स्मृता
For the sake of wealth, O Pārtha, and on earth, therefore this is called Kaumudī.
दत्तं दानवराजस्य आदर्शमिव भूतले
The gift to the king of the Dānavas is like a mirror on the earth.
कुत ईति भयं तत्र नास्ति मृत्युकृतं भयम्
There, fear does not arise, nor is there fear caused by death.
नीरुजश्च जनाः सर्वे सर्वोपद्रववर्जिताः
All people will be free from disease and untouched by any calamity.
यो यादृशेन भावेन तिष्ठत्यस्यां युधिष्ठिर
O Yudhishthira, as one stands with whatever disposition in this world,
