In places delightful to men and women intoxicated by gambling and drinking, with faces brightened by betel and adorned with saffron powder,
दुकूलपट्टनेपथ्ये स्वर्णमाणिक्यभूषिते 4.140.
With fine cloths and silk garments, adorned with gold and jewels,
युवतीजनसंकीर्णवस्त्रोज्ज्वलविहारिणि प्रदोषे दोषरहिते शस्तदोषागमे शुभे
In radiant halls crowded with young women, in the evening free of faults, at the auspicious arrival of the proper time,
शशिपूर्णमुखाभिश्च कन्याभिः क्षिप्ततण्डुलम्
With maidens whose faces are full like the moon, tossing rice,
भ्राम्यमाणो नतो मूर्घ्नि मनुजानां जनाधिपः नीराजनं तु तेनेह प्रोच्यते विजयप्रदम्
The king, circling with bowed head among the people, performs the waving of lights here, which is said to grant victory,
तस्माज्जनेन कर्तव्यं रक्षोदोषभयापहम्
Therefore, people should perform this, which removes fear of evil and danger,
क्षुद्रोपसर्गरहिते राजचौरभयोज्झिते
Where there is freedom from minor afflictions and from fear of kings and thieves,
ततोऽर्द्धरात्रसमये स्वयं राजा व्रजेत्पुरम्
Then, at midnight, the king himself should enter the city,
महता तूर्यघोषेण ज्वलद्भिर्हस्तदीपकैः
With a great sound of instruments and blazing lamps held in hand,
तं दृष्ट्वा महदाश्चर्यमृद्धिं चैवात्मनः शुभाम्
Seeing that great wonder and the auspicious prosperity of himself,
एवं गते निशार्धे तु जने निद्रार्द्रलोचने निष्क्राम्यते प्रहृष्टाभिरलक्ष्मीः स्वगृहांगणात्
When half the night has passed and the people’s eyes are heavy with sleep, Lakshmi joyfully departs from her own courtyard,
ततः प्रबुद्धे सकले जने जातमहोत्सवे 4.140.
Then, when all the people awaken, a great festival arises.
वेश्या विलासिनी सार्धं स्वस्ति मंगलकारिणी
The courtesan, adorned with beauty, together with auspiciousness and good fortune.
पिष्टकोद्वर्तनपरे गुरुशुश्रूषणाकुले
Engaged in the application of paste and massage, absorbed in the service of the teacher.
सुवासिनीभ्यो दाने च दीयमाने यदृच्छया
When gifts are given to well-attired women, let them be offered freely.
सद्भावेनैव सन्तोष्या देवाः सत्पुरुषा द्विजाः
With sincerity alone, the gods, virtuous people, and twice-born are satisfied.
वस्त्रैस्तांबूलदानैश्च पुष्पकर्पूरकुंकुमैः
With gifts of cloth, betel, flowers, camphor, and saffron.
ग्रामैर्विषयदानैश्च सामंतनृपतीन्धनैः
With grants of villages, territories, and wealth from allied kings.
स्वयं राजा तोषयेत्स जनान्भृत्यान्पृथक्पृथक्
The king himself should gratify those people and servants, each separately.
वृषभान्महिषांश्चैव युध्यमानान्परैः सह
Bulls and buffaloes, engaged in battle with others.
मंचारूढः स्वयं पश्येन्नटनर्तकचारणान्
Seated upon a platform, he himself should watch dancers, actors, and bards.
दिष्ट्या कार्यं पयोज्योतिरुक्तिप्रत्युक्तिका वदेत् 4.140.
By destiny, the task is accomplished; let one speak words of praise and reply.
मार्गपालीं प्रबध्नीयात्तुंगस्तंभेऽथ पादपे
One should tie the boundary marker to a tall post or tree.
पूजयित्वा गजान्वाजीन्सार्धे यामत्रये गते
Having worshipped elephants and horses, when the third watch of the night has passed.
कृते होमे द्विजेन्द्रैस्तु गृह्णीयान्मार्गपालिकाम्
When the sacrifice has been performed by the foremost twice-born, one should take the boundary marker.
स्वशक्त्यपेक्षया वापि गृह्णीयाद्वामभोजनैः
Or, according to one's ability, one may take it with offerings of food.
संतारयेत्स सकलं मार्गपालीं ददाति यः
Whoever gives the boundary marker causes all to cross safely.
मार्गपालीतलेनेत्थं हया गावो गजा वृषाः
By means of the boundary marker, thus, horses, cows, elephants, and bulls.
मार्गपालीं समुल्लंघ्य नीरुजः स्यात्सुखी सदा
Having crossed the boundary marker, one becomes free from disease and always happy.
पूजां कुर्यान्नरः साक्षाद्भूमौ मंडलके कृते
A man should perform worship directly upon the ground where the circle is made.
