पितृशर्मोवाच त्रिगुणैक्यस्वरूपायै तुरीयायै नमोनमः ।। 3.2.30.
Pitṛśarma said: Repeated salutations to Her who is the embodiment of the unity of the three guṇas, who is the transcendent fourth.
महत्तत्त्वजनन्यै च द्वंद्वकर्त्र्यै नमोनमः
Repeated salutations to the mother of the great principle, to the creator of duality.
पृथग्गुणायै शुद्धायै नमो मातर्नमोनमः
Salutations to Her of distinct qualities, to the pure one; salutations, O Mother, repeated salutations.
नमो मातरविद्यायै ततः शुद्ध्यै नमोनमः
Salutations to the Mother of knowledge, and again, salutations to purity.
स्त्रियै शुद्धरजोमूर्त्यै नमस्त्रैलोक्यवासिनि
Salutations to the woman, the pure embodiment of Rajas, who dwells in the three worlds.
इति श्रुत्वा स्तवं देव्या प्रसादः स्थापितस्तया
Having heard this hymn, the goddess bestowed her favor.
तामुद्वाह्य द्विजो देवीं नाम्ना वै ब्रह्मचारिणीम्
The Brahmin married that goddess, known by the name Brahmacāriṇī.
प्रियायै स रजोवत्यै ऋतुदानं करोति हि
To his beloved, who was in her menstrual period, he indeed gave the customary gift.
ऋग्यजुश्च तथा साम तुर्यश्चासी दथर्वणः
Ṛg, Yajus, Sāma, and the fourth, Atharvaṇa, were present.
यजुषस्तु सुतो जातो मीमांसो लोकविश्रुतः
From Yajus was born a son, Mīmāṃsa, renowned in the world.
पुत्रो वररुचिः श्रेष्ठोऽथर्वणस्य नृपप्रियः ।। ते गता मागधेशस्य चन्द्रगुप्तस्य वै सभाम् 3.2.30.
Atharvaṇa’s excellent son was Vararuci, beloved of kings; they went to the assembly of Candragupta, king of Magadha.
नृपस्तान्पूजयामास बहुमानपुरःसरम्
The king honored them with great respect.
व्याडिराह महाराज यः स्तुतौ तत्परः पुमान्
Vyāḍi said: 'O great king, the man who is devoted to praise—'
मीमांसश्चाह भो राजन्यज्ञे यो हि पुमान्परः
And Mīmāṃsa said: 'O king, the man who is foremost in sacrifice—'
हवनं तर्पणं कृत्वा ब्रह्मादिकसुरान्प्रति
Having performed oblations and offerings to Brahmā and the other gods—
श्रुत्वेदं पाणिनिश्चाह चन्द्रगुप्त शृणुष्व भोः
Śrutveda and Pāṇini also spoke: 'O Candragupta, listen—'
तथैव सूत्रपाठैश्च लिंगधातुगणावृतैः
In the same way, with recitations of sūtras, covered with lists of roots and stems—
श्रुत्वा वररुचिश्चाह शृणु मागधभूपते
Hearing this, Vararuci said: 'Listen, O king of Magadha—'
दंडलोमनखाधारी भिक्षार्थी वेदतत्परः
One who bears staff, hair, and nails, who begs for alms, devoted to the Veda—
इति तेषां वचः श्रुत्वा पितृशर्माब्रवीदिदम्
Hearing their words, Pitṛśarman spoke this—
गामी पाणिगृहीतायामृतुकाले यतेंद्रियः 3.2.30.
A man who takes a woman by the hand at the proper time, with controlled senses—
स्वामिन्यद्भवता चोक्तं धर्मज्ञेन यशस्विना
O master, what you have said is true, O illustrious knower of dharma.
इत्युक्त्वा तस्य शिष्योऽभूद्गुरुवाक्यपरायणः
Having spoken thus, he became a disciple devoted to the words of his teacher.
पितृशर्मापि मनसा ध्यात्वा दामोदरं हरिम्
Pitṛśarmā, too, meditated in his mind upon Dāmodara Hari.

By doing this, even in the dreadful age of Kali, one may attain supreme bliss.
कणभुग्वरशिष्यैश्च शास्त्रज्ञैः स पराजितः
He was defeated by the disciples of Kaṇabhujvara, who were learned in the scriptures.
लज्जितः पाणिनिस्तत्र गतस्तीर्थान्तरं प्रति
Ashamed, Pāṇini left that place, heading toward another sacred site.
केदारमुदकं पीत्वा शिवध्यानपरोऽभवत्
After drinking the water at Kedāra, he became absorbed in meditation on Śiva.
ततो दशदिनान्ते स वायुभक्षो दशाहनि
Then, at the end of ten days, he subsisted on air alone for ten days.
श्रुत्वामृतमयं वाक्यमस्तौद्गद्गदया गिरा
Hearing words filled with nectar, he praised with a voice choked with emotion.
