श्रुत्वैतद्वचनं राजा वसुर्वसुमतां वरः
Having heard these words, King Vasur, the best among the Vasumats,
श्रवणे स्थापयेद्यष्टिं स्नानवस्त्रैः प्रपूजिताम्
Should establish the staff at the time of hearing, worshipped with bathing cloths.
इन्द्रस्थाने पुरोद्दिष्टे इन्द्रमातृकसंज्ञके
At the place designated for Indra, known as Indra-matrika,
वस्त्रैर्विचित्रैः संवीतां पिटिकालंकृतां तथा
Clothed in various garments and adorned with baskets,
प्रथमं लोकपालाख्यं चतुरस्रं सकर्णिकम्
First, a square with ears called Lokapala should be made.
वृत्तं खंडास्रकं रम्यं द्वितीयं रक्तचूर्णितम्
The second, beautiful and circular with a broken square, should be colored with red powder.
चतुर्थमिन्द्रगोपालवृत्तं मातृसमावृतम्
The fourth, circular and resembling Indra's cowherd, should be surrounded by matrikas.
कृष्णकर्णिकया षष्ठं वृत्तं बुद्बुद शोभितम्
The sixth, circular and adorned with bubbles, should have a black center.
अष्टमं पिटकं वृत्तं वरत्रासूत्रवेष्टितम् ।। 4.139.
The eighth basket is round, wrapped with a cord of silk.
ब्रह्मविष्ण्वीशसहितं दशमं शिवसंस्थितम्
The tenth is established with Brahma, Vishnu, and Ishvara; the abode of Shiva.
छात्रं द्वादशमं शुक्लं ध्वजदीर्घं त्रयोदशम्
The twelfth is a white umbrella; the thirteenth, a long banner.
बन्धयित्वा चन्द्रपादै रज्जुभिः स्थूणिकां नरैः
After fastening the pillar with lunar feet and ropes by men,
दक्षिणाभिश्च संपूज्य गुडपायसपूपकैः
And honoring with offerings of sweet rice, cakes, and gifts,
प्रेक्षणीयैर्महादानैर्नटैगीतैः कथानकैः
With splendid donations, performances by dancers, singers, and storytellers,
वेश्यांगनानरैर्हृष्टैर्द्यूतक्रीडामहोत्सवैः
With joyful courtesans and women, with grand festivals of gambling and games,
रात्रौ प्रजागरः कार्यो रक्षणाय प्रयत्नतः
At night, vigilance must be maintained carefully for protection.
काकाद्भवति दुर्भिक्षं कौशिकान्म्रियते नृपः
Famine arises from crows; the king dies from owls.
शैथिल्याद्गिरिभिच्छक्रः प्रमादान्नीयते यदि
From looseness, the wheel falls; from negligence, it is carried away.
यावत्तु नीयते स्थानादन्यस्मादैंद्रतो ध्वजः ।। 4.139.
As long as the banner is moved from its place or from the Indra position,
इंद्रध्वजसमुत्थानं प्रमादान्न कृतं यदि
If the raising of the Indra banner is not performed due to negligence,
कथंचिद्यदि विघ्नः स्याद्विपाकं मे निबोध वै
If by any means there is an obstacle, listen to its consequences from me.
मस्तके मन्त्रविच्छेदो मुखे मुख्यबलक्षयः
On the head, interruption of mantra; at the mouth, loss of chief strength.
वरत्रायां मित्रनाशः स्थूणिकासु पदातयः
At the cord, loss of friends; at the pillars, defeat of foot soldiers.
उत्थाप्य पूजयेद्भक्त्या दिवारात्रमतंद्रितः
Having raised it, one should worship with devotion, day and night, without fatigue.
सौवर्णं रौप्यकं कृत्वा पूर्णमुत्थापयेद्ध्वजम्
Making it of gold or silver, one should fully raise the banner.
त्रपुसैः कर्कटीभिश्च नालिकेरैः कपित्थकैः
With tin, crabs, coconuts, and wood apples.
नैवेद्यादिभिरभ्यर्च्य मंत्रेणानेन तोषयेत् क्षेमार्थं सर्वलोकस्य पूजेयं प्रतिगृह्यताम्
After offering worship with food and other offerings, one should satisfy with this mantra; for the welfare of all worlds, this worship should be accepted.
श्रवणाद्भरणीं यावत्पूजां कृत्वा विधानतः
From the hearing until Bharani, the worship should be performed according to the prescribed method.
सार्थं सुरासुरगणैः पुरंदरशतक्रतो 4.139.
For the purpose of the procession, Indra, the lord of gods and demons, the hundred-sacrificer, is accompanied.
एवं यः कुरुते यात्रामिन्द्रकेतोर्युधिष्ठिर
O Yudhishthira, whoever undertakes the procession of Indra's banner in this manner,
