शतं चापि शतार्धं वा तदर्द्धं वा यथेच्छया
One should give a hundred, or a hundred and fifty, or half of that, as one wishes—
कापालिकेभ्यस्तद्देयं दासीदासजनैस्तथा
That should be given to the Kāpālikas, as well as to female and male servants.
ततोपराह्णसमये नवम्यां स्यंदने स्थिताम्
Then, in the afternoon on the ninth day, she is to be placed upon a chariot.
सहस्रैः पुरुषैर्वापि रथयुक्तैः सुशिक्षितैः 4.138.
With thousands of men, or with well-trained warriors mounted on chariots,
आकृष्टखड्गैर्वीरैश्च धातुरक्तैर्गजैस्तथा अलंकृताभिर्नारीभिर्बालकैः सुविभूषितैः
With heroes bearing drawn swords, with elephants stained by minerals and blood, adorned women, and children splendidly decorated,
भूतेभ्यस्तु बलिं दद्यान्मंत्रेणानेन सामिषम् १
One should offer an oblation with meat to the spirits, using this mantra.
त्रींस्त्रीन्वारांस्त्रिशूलेन दिग्विदिक्षु क्षिपेद्बलिम्
He should cast the offering three times in all directions with a trident.
मरुतोऽथाश्विनौ रुद्राः सुपर्णा पन्नगा ग्रहाः १०४ शाकिन्यो यक्षवेताला योगिन्यः पूतनाः शिवाः
The Maruts, the Ashvins, the Rudras, the Suparnas, the serpents, the planets, the witches, Yakshas, Vetalas, Yoginis, Putanas, and Shivas—
दिक्पाला लोकपालाश्च ये च विघ्नविनायकाः १
The guardians of the directions, the protectors of the worlds, and the removers of obstacles—
सविघ्नं मम पापं ते शाम्यंतु परिपन्थिनः। सौम्या भवंतु तृप्ताश्च भूताः प्रेताः सुखावहाः ।।१
May all my obstacles and sins be pacified by them; may the spirits, ghosts, and pretas become gentle, satisfied, and bring happiness.
इत्येवं भ्रामयेद्राष्ट्रे दुर्गां देवी रथे स्थिताम् १
Thus, one should carry the goddess Durga, who is seated on a chariot, throughout the kingdom.
अथोत्पन्नेषु विप्रेषु भूतशांतिं समाचरेत् १
Then, when the brahmins have arisen, one should perform the pacification of spirits.
एवं ये कुर्वते यात्रां राजानोऽन्येऽपि मानवाः 4.138.११
Thus, those kings and other men who perform this procession—
ते सर्वे पापनिर्मुक्ता यांति भागवतीं पुरीम् ।।१
All of them, freed from sin, go to the city of the Goddess.
न तेषां शावको नाग्निर्न चौरा न विनायकाः
For them, there is no corpse, no fire, no thief, and no Vinayaka.
नीरुजः सुखिनो भोगभोक्तारो भयवर्जिताः
They are free from disease, happy, enjoy pleasures, and are without fear.
इत्येष ते समाख्यातो दुर्गादेव्या महोत्सवः
Thus, this great festival of the goddess Durga has been described to you.
शूलाग्रभिन्नमहिषासुरपृष्ठविष्टामृत्खातखड्गरुचिरांगदबाहुदण्डाम्
Her arm is adorned with a bracelet, beautiful with a sword, and she sits upon the back of Mahishasura, pierced by the tip of a spear.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे महानवमीव्रतवर्णनंनामाष्टत्रिंशदुत्तरशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred thirty-eighth chapter, named 'Description of the Great Navami Vow,' in the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Yudhishthira in the Uttaraparvan of the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana.
महेन्द्रध्वजमहोत्सववर्णनम् विजयार्थं महेन्द्रस्य ध्वजयष्टिः प्रतिष्ठिता
Description of the great festival of the banner of Mahendra: For the sake of victory, the banner-staff of Mahendra is established.
मेरोरुपरि संस्थाप्य सिद्धविद्याधरोरगैः
Having established it atop Mount Meru with the siddhas, vidyadharas, and serpents,
स्वच्छत्रघंटापिटकैः किंकिणीबद्धबुद्बुदैः गता रसातलं दैत्या देवाश्चापि दिवि स्थिताः
With their own umbrellas, bells, baskets, and bubbles adorned with tinkling ornaments, the demons went to the netherworld, while the gods remained in heaven.
ततः प्रभृति तां दिव्यामिंद्रयष्टिं यजंति ते
From that time onward, they worship that divine Indra-staff.
अतः स्वर्गं गतो राजा भूरिपुण्यवशाद्वसुः
Therefore, the king Vasur, due to his abundant merit, attained heaven.
तस्मै दता महेन्द्रेण वसुयष्टिः प्रगृह्यताम्
To him, Mahendra granted the Vasur-staff, which should be received.
अवतार्य वर्षासमये सर्वैर्नृपतिभिः सह
Having brought it down during the rainy season, together with all the kings,
महेन मघवा प्रीतो ददौ पुण्यं वसोर्वरम्
The great Maghavan, pleased, bestowed the blessed boon of Vasur.
येषु देशेषु मनुजा भक्तिभावपुरःसराः
In those regions where people, led by devotion,
तेषु देशेषु मुदिताः प्रजा रोगविवर्जिताः 4.139.
In those regions, the joyful subjects are free from disease.
भविष्यंति सुवेषाश्च सुभाषाश्च सुभूषणाः
They will become well-dressed, eloquent, and beautifully adorned.
