Thus, O Brahmin, I have told you the supreme vow among vows.
Among all vows, the vow of Nārāyaṇa is the highest.
O Sūta, it has been heard from your mouth that it destroys the threefold miseries.
Of all forms of celibacy, what indeed is higher than celibacy?
One who knows the essence of the Vedas and their limbs, yet is afflicted by fear of Yama's realm,
Knowing the most terrible time, the Kali age, born of unrighteousness,
By which āśrama or caste can I attain my highest good here?
In the Kali age, there is no vānaprastha, and celibacy is found only here and there.
Therefore, I should accept a wife in this dreadful Kali age; then my birth will be fruitful, and my highest good will be attained here.
Thus, having decided so, I worship the auspicious, bestower of blessings, the universal goddess, the embodiment of existence, consciousness, and bliss.

Repeated salutations to the mother of the great principle, to the creator of duality.
Salutations to Her of distinct qualities, to the pure one; salutations, O Mother, repeated salutations.
Salutations to the Mother of knowledge, and again, salutations to purity.
Salutations to the woman, the pure embodiment of Rajas, who dwells in the three worlds.
Having heard this hymn, the goddess bestowed her favor.
The Brahmin married that goddess, known by the name Brahmacāriṇī.
To his beloved, who was in her menstrual period, he indeed gave the customary gift.
Ṛg, Yajus, Sāma, and the fourth, Atharvaṇa, were present.
From Yajus was born a son, Mīmāṃsa, renowned in the world.
Atharvaṇa’s excellent son was Vararuci, beloved of kings; they went to the assembly of Candragupta, king of Magadha.

The king honored them with great respect.
Vyāḍi said: 'O great king, the man who is devoted to praise—'
And Mīmāṃsa said: 'O king, the man who is foremost in sacrifice—'
Having performed oblations and offerings to Brahmā and the other gods—
Śrutveda and Pāṇini also spoke: 'O Candragupta, listen—'
In the same way, with recitations of sūtras, covered with lists of roots and stems—
Hearing this, Vararuci said: 'Listen, O king of Magadha—'
One who bears staff, hair, and nails, who begs for alms, devoted to the Veda—
Hearing their words, Pitṛśarman spoke this—
