( इति हस्तिमंत्रः नागकिन्नरगन्धर्वयक्ष भूतगणाग्रहाः
(Thus is the elephant mantra:) The foremost among the hosts of Nagas, Kinnaras, Gandharvas, Yakshas, and spirits,
प्रमथाश्च सहादित्यैर्भूतेशो मातृभिः सह
And the Pramathas together with the Adityas, and the Lord of beings with the Mothers,
प्रदहंतु रिपून्सर्वान्राजा विजयमृच्छतु
May they burn up all enemies; may the king obtain victory.
एतानि परशत्रूणां हतानि तव तेजसा 4.138.
By your radiance, these enemies of yours have been destroyed.
हिरण्यकशिपोर्युद्धे युद्धे देवासुरे तथा
In the battle of Hiranyakashipu, and likewise in the war between gods and demons,
नीलां श्वेतामिमां दृष्ट्वा नश्यंत्वद्य नृपारयः
Seeing these blue and white ones, today, O best of kings, let your enemies perish.
सद्यः स्वस्था भवंति स्म त्वद्वातेनापमार्जिताः
They became healthy at once, cleansed by your wind.
पूतना रेवती नाम्ना कालरात्रीति या स्मृता
Putana, known as Revatī, is remembered as Kālarātri.
(इति पताकामन्त्रः श्रीगर्भो विजयश्चैव धर्मधारस्तथैव च
Thus is the banner-mantra: Śrīgarbha, Vijaya, and Dharmadhāra likewise.
इत्यष्टौ तव नामानि स्वयमुक्तानि वेधसा
These eight names of yours were spoken by the Creator himself.
हिरण्यं च शरीरं ते धाता देवो जनार्दनः
Your body is golden, and the god Dhātā, Janārdana, is its maker.
(इति खड्गमन्त्रः रक्ष मां रक्षणीयोऽहं तव वर्मन्नमोऽस्तु ते
Thus is the sword-mantra: Protect me, I am to be protected; I bow to your path.
( इति वर्ममन्त्रः दुन्दुभे त्वं सपत्नानां घोषाद्धृदयकम्पन
Thus is the armor-mantra: O Dundubhi, by your sound you shake the hearts of enemies.
यथा जीमूतघोषेण हृष्यंति वरवारणाः 4.138.
Just as noble elephants rejoice at the sound of thunderclouds.
यथा जीमूतशब्देन स्त्रीणां त्रासोऽभिजायते
Just as the sound of thunderclouds causes fear among women.
( इति दुंदुभिमंत्रः चाप मां सर्वदा रक्ष साकं सायकसत्तमैः
Thus is the drum-mantra: Bow, always protect me, together with the best arrows.
( इति चापमन्त्रः विष्णुना विधृतो नित्यं मनःशांतिप्रदो भव
Thus is the bow-mantra: Always held by Viṣṇu, bring peace to the mind.
( इति शङ्खमन्त्रः प्रोत्सारयाशु दुरितं चामरामरवल्लभ
Thus is the conch-mantra: Quickly drive away misfortune, O beloved of the gods.
( इति चामरमंत्रः शूलायुधाद्विनिष्कृष्य कृत्वा मुष्टिपरिग्रहम्
Thus is the fly-whisk-mantra: Having removed from the trident weapon, taking it in the fist.
चंडिकायाः प्रदत्तासि सर्वदुष्टनिबर्हिणि
You are given by Caṇḍikā, destroyer of all wickedness.
सर्व सत्त्वांगभूतासि सर्वाशुभनिवारिणि
You are present in all beings, remover of all evil.
( इतिच्छुरिकामंत्रः ब्रह्मणा निर्मितश्चासि व्यवहारप्रसिद्धये
Thus is the dagger-mantra: You are created by Brahmā for the fame of action.
यशो देहि सुखं देहि जयदो भव भूपतेः
Grant fame, grant happiness, be the giver of victory to the king.
( इति कनकदण्डमन्त्रः दुःखहा धर्मदः शांतः सर्वारिष्टविनाशनः ।।4.138.
Thus is the golden rod-mantra: Remover of sorrow, giver of righteousness, peaceful, destroyer of all calamities.
एतेऽष्टौ संनिधौ यस्मात्तव सिंहा महाबला तेन सिंहासनेति त्वं विप्रैर्वेदेषु गीयसे
Because these eight mighty lions are present with you, therefore, O King, you are called 'Siṃhāsana' by the learned in the Vedas.
त्वयि स्थितः शिवः साक्षात्त्वयि शक्रसुरेश्वरः
Śiva himself abides in you; in you is Indra, lord of the gods.
नमस्ते सर्वतोभद्र भद्रदो भव भूपतेः
Salutations to you, O universally auspicious one, bestower of good fortune, O lord of the earth.
( इति सिंहासनमंत्र फलनैवेद्यकुसुमैर्धूपदीपविलेपनैः
Thus, with the Siṃhāsana mantra, with offerings of fruits, food, flowers, incense, lamps, and ointments—
अष्टम्यां धावनं कृत्वा पूर्वाह्ने स्नानमाचरेत्
On the eighth day, after performing the ritual bath in the forenoon, one should bathe.
( अथ गद्यम्) दुर्गां कांचनमूर्तिं रौप्यां वा पैत्तलीं वार्क्षी चैत्रीं ताम्रीं वाधिभवतः कृत्वा दारुविचित्रतोरणविन्यस्तां शोभने स्थाने पुरतो विन्यस्तदृष्टां विचित्रगृहमध्यगां स्नातां कुंकुमचंदनगंधैश्चतुःसमैश्चीरपट्टैश्चर्चितगात्रां देवीं कुसुमैरभ्यर्च्य तां बहुभिः पुष्यमाणकीर्तिस्तैर्द्वि जननैर्जनितपरितोषैर्दिवान्वितो नरेद्रः स्वयं प्रयच्छेत्पुरोहितैः सार्धं बिल्वपत्रेणार्चनेन मंत्रेणानेन भगवत्यै जयंती मंगला काली भद्रकाली कपालिनी
Then, having fashioned an image of Durgā from gold, or silver, or copper, or wood, or clay, or brass, and having placed it in a beautiful spot, adorned with a splendid wooden archway, and set in the midst of a decorated house, bathed, anointed with saffron and sandalwood, adorned with fourfold garments and cloths, worshipped with flowers, and praised by many, and having pleased her with two kinds of offerings, the king himself, together with the priests, should worship the goddess with bilva leaves and this mantra: 'Jayaṃtī, Maṅgalā, Kālī, Bhadrakālī, Kapālinī.'
