एवं विंध्योपवासिन्या नवरात्रोपवासिनः
For those who kill, cause to be killed, or consent to killing, please resolve this doubt of mine, O Keśava.
यजनैर्याजनैर्देवाः स्थानेस्थाने पुरेपुरे
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: O Pārtha, that supreme power, infinite and renowned in all worlds, is the primal, all-pervading, pure, accessible through devotion, and captivating.
स्नातैः प्रमुदितैर्हृष्टैर्ब्राह्मणैः क्षत्रियैर्नृपैः
The first is Aṣṭamī, called Kālī; the second is Sarvamaṅgalā. She is Māyā, Kātyāyanī, Durgā, Cāmuṇḍā, and dear to Śaṅkara.
स्त्रीभिश्च कुरुशार्दूल तद्विधानमिदं शृणु 4.138.
She, whom the yogis meditate upon, is the supreme goddess. Bhavānī, in her various forms and names, is worshipped as Śivā.
लोहाभिहारिकं कर्म कारयेद्यावदष्टमि
On the eighth and ninth lunar days, the goddess is worshipped by gods, demons, and rākṣasas, by gandharvas, serpents, kinnaras, and humans, with sacrifices.
मण्डपं कारयेद्दिव्यं नवसप्तकरं वरम्
Even in other yugas, at the beginning of creation, she was revealed; this goddess was worshipped in ancient times by those noble ones.
मेखलात्रयसं युक्तं योन्यश्वत्थदलाभया
On the eighth day of the bright fortnight of Āśvayuja, joined with the Mūla star, that is called Mahānavamī, rare even in the three worlds.
आनीय मण्डपे तानि सर्वाण्येवाधिवासयेत्
When the sun enters Virgo, on the bright eighth day joined with the Mūla constellation, that is remembered as Mahānavamī.
ॐकाररपूर्वकैर्मन्त्रैस्तल्लिंगैर्जुहुयाद् घृतम्
He who worships Ambikā, the mother of the world, on the eighth and ninth days in the month of Āśvina, becomes free from sorrow and conquers his enemies.
स देवैः समरे क्रुद्धैर्बहुधा शकलीकृतः
The goddess, worshipped on Navamī, destroys enemies day and night with her roar and weapons, and grants the ninth fruit.
शस्त्रास्त्रमन्त्रैर्होतव्यं पायसं घृतसंयुतम्
She is holy, she is pure, she bestows righteousness and happiness; therefore, Cāmuṇḍā, the garlanded one, should always be worshipped.
लोहाभिहारिकं कर्म तेनैतदृषिभिः स्मृतम्
If, on that day, living beings such as buffaloes are offered, all of them attain heaven; there is no sin for the slayer.
भ्रामयेन्नगरे नित्यं नंदिघोषपुरस्सरम्
Not by offering bali, nor by flowers, incense, or ointments, is Vindhyavāsinī as satisfied as she is by buffaloes.
पूजयेद्राजचिह्नानि फलमाल्यानुलेपनैः 4.138.
Creatures slain here, according to rule, for the sake of Durgā, go to heaven, O Kaunteya, even if killed, because of devotion.
तस्याभिहरणाद्राज्ञो विजयः समुदाहृतः
Those whose lives depart in the courtyard of Bhavānī, O Yudhiṣṭhira, surely dwell in heaven, beloved of the best of apsarases.
यैः पूजिताः प्रयच्छन्ति कीर्तिमायुर् यशोबलम्
In all manvantaras and kalpas, O descendant of Kuru, this Navamī was always worshipped among them.
तथाच्छादय राजानं विजयारोग्यवृद्धये गन्धर्व कुलजातस्त्वं मा भूयाः कुलदूषकः
Thus, cover the king for the increase of victory and health; you, born in the Gandharva lineage, do not become a disgrace to your family.
ब्रह्मणः सत्यवाक्येन सोमस्य वरुणस्य च
By the truthful words of Brahma, Soma, and Varuna,
तेजसा चैव सूर्यस्य मुनीनां तपसा यथा
With the radiance of the sun and the austerity of sages,
स्मर त्वं राजपुत्रोऽसि कौस्तुभं च मणिं स्मर
Remember, you are a prince; remember also the Kaustubha gem.
भूम्यर्थेनृतवादी च क्षत्रियश्च पराङ्मुखः
One who speaks falsely for the sake of land, or a Kshatriya who turns away,
व्रजेच्च तां गतिं क्षिप्रं तच्च पापं भवेत्किल रिपून्विजित्य समरे सह भर्त्रा सुखी भव
He quickly attains that state, and that indeed becomes sin; having conquered your enemies in battle, be happy together with your husband.
पतत्रिराड्वैनतेयस्तथा नारायणध्वजः
The king of birds, Vainateya, and the banner of Narayana,
काश्यपेयोऽमृतो ज्ञेयो नागारिर्विष्णुवाहनः 4.138.
Born of Kashyapa, known as immortal, enemy of serpents, vehicle of Vishnu.
गरुत्मान्मारुतगतिस्त्वयि सन्निहितः स्थितः
Garutman, swift as the wind, stands present near you.
सुप्रतीकोञ्जनो नील एतेऽष्टौ देवयोनयः
Supratika, Anjana, and Nila—these eight are divine lineages.
एतेषां पुत्रपौत्राश्च बलान्यष्टौ समाश्रिताः वनेवने प्रसूतास्ते करियोनिं महागजाः
Their sons and grandsons, these eight strengths have been taken up; born in forest after forest, they are great elephants of the elephant lineage.
पांतु त्वां वसवो रुद्रा आदित्याः समरुद्गणाः
May the Vasus, Rudras, Adityas, and the hosts of Maruts protect you.
अवापुर्हि जयं युद्धे गमने स्वस्ति नो व्रज स्थैर्यं मेरोर्जयं रुद्राद्यशो देवात्पुरंदरात्
They indeed attained victory in battle; may your journey be auspicious for us. May you have the steadiness of Meru, victory from Rudra, and fame from the gods and Purandara.
युद्धे रक्षंतु नागास्त्वां दिशश्च सह दैवतैः
In battle, may the Nagas protect you, and the directions together with the deities.
