कार्या गृहस्य रक्षा गोमयरहितैः सुवृत्तकुंडूकैः
Protection for the house should be arranged with well-shaped vessels, free from cow dung.
उपलिप्तगृहमध्ये चतुष्कोपरि न्यसेच्छुभं पीठम्
In the center of the freshly plastered house, one should place an auspicious seat with four legs.
वेश्याजनेनसहितो मंगलशब्दैः सुहसितैश्चिह्नैः
Accompanied by courtesans, with auspicious sounds, pleasant laughter, and marks,
देवद्विजातिशस्ता सुस्त्रीरर्घ्यैः समर्चयेत्प्रथमम्
One should first worship the gods, twice-born, and respected women with worthy offerings.
महानवमीव्रतवर्णनम् श्रीकृष्ण उवाच पुण्या महानवम्यस्ति तिथीनां प्रवरा तिथिः । सानुष्ठेया सुरैः सर्वैः प्रजापालैर्विशेषतः । । १ भवानुत्थापयेत्पार्थ सम्वत्सरसुखाय वै । भूतप्रेतपिशाचानां प्रीत्यर्थं चोत्सवाय वा । । २ युधिष्ठिर उवाच कस्मात्कालात्प्रवृत्तेयं नवमी महशब्दयुक् । किमादावुपपन्नोऽस्ति भगवन्नवमीविधिः । । ३ यशोदागर्भसम्भूतेरुत यात्रा प्रवर्तते । उताहो पूर्वमेवासीत्कृतत्रेतायुगादिषु । । ४ यदस्यां प्राणिनः केचिन्मन्यन्ते घातयन्ति च । हतानां प्राणिनां तेषां का गतिः पारलौकिकी । । ५ स्वयं घ्नतां घातयतामनुमोदयतां तथा । एतन्मे संशयं पूर्वं वक्तुमर्हसि केशव । । ६ श्रीकृष्ण उवाच पार्थ या परमा शक्तिरनन्ता लोकविश्रुता । आद्या सर्वगता शुद्धा भावगम्या मनोहरा । । ७ आद्याष्टमी कलाकाली द्वितीया सर्वमङ्गला । माया कात्यायनी दुर्गा चामुण्डा शङ्करप्रिया । । ८ ध्यायन्ति यां योगरतां सा देवी परमेश्वरी । रूपभेदैर्नामभेदैर्भवानी पूज्यते शिवा । । ९ अष्टम्यां तु नवम्यां तु देवदानवराक्षसैः । गन्धर्वैरुरगैर्यज्ञैः पूज्यते किन्नरैर्नरैः । । 4.138.१० अन्येष्वपि युगेष्वादौ सृष्टेः पूर्वं प्रदर्शिता । पूज्यतेयं पुरा देवी तेभ्यः पूर्वतरैः शुभैः । । ११ आश्वयुक्छुक्लपक्षे च याष्टमी मूलसंयुता । सा महानवमी नाम त्रैलोक्येऽपि सुदुर्लभा । । १२ कन्यागते सवितरि शुक्लपक्षेऽष्टमी तु या । मूलनक्षत्रसंयुक्ता सा महानवमी स्मृता । । १३ अष्टम्यां च नवम्यां च जगन्मातरमम्बिकाम् । पूजयित्याऽऽश्विने मासि विशोको जयति द्विषः । । १४ सन्तर्जयन्ती हुंकारैः खड्गादिभिरहर्निशम् । नवम्यां पूजिता देवी ददाति नवमं फलम् । । १५ सा पुण्या सा पवित्रा च सा धर्मसुखदायिनी । तस्मात्सदा पूजनीया चामुण्डामुण्डमालिनी । । १६ तस्यां यद्युपयुज्यन्ते प्राणिनो महिषादयः । सर्वे ते स्वर्गतिं यान्ति घ्नतां पापं न विद्यते । । १७ न तथा बलिदानेन पुष्पधूपविलेपनैः । यथा संतुष्यते लोके महिषैर्विन्ध्यवासिनी । । १८ उद्दिश्य दुर्गां हन्यन्ते विधानाद्येऽत्र जन्तवः । स्वर्गं ते यान्ति कौन्तेय घातयन्तोऽपि भक्तितः । । १९ भवानीप्राङ्गणे प्राणा येषां याता युधिष्ठिर । तेषां स्वर्गे ध्रुवं वासो वरास्तेऽप्सरसां प्रियाः । । 4.138.२० मन्वन्तरेषु सर्वेषु कल्पेषु कुरुनन्दन । तेषु सर्वेषु चैवासीन्नवमीयं पुरार्चिता
The vow of Mahānavamī is described.
प्रसिद्धानादिनिधना वर्षेवर्षे युधिष्ठिर
O Yudhiṣṭhira, in every year, from the beginning to the end, this is well known.
अवतीर्णा भुवि सदा नित्यं दैत्यनिबर्हिणी
She, the great goddess, always descends to earth, ever the destroyer of demons.
पुनश्चैषा महादेवी यशोदा गर्भसंभवा
Again, this great goddess, born from the womb of Yaśodā,
ततः प्रभृति लोकेषु यशोदानंददायिनीम्
From that time onward, among the people, she is known as Yaśodā's daughter.
पूर्वप्रवृद्धोऽपि पुनर्भगिन्या महिमा कृतः
Though ancient, her glory was again established by her brother.
एवं विंध्योपवासिन्या नवरात्रोपवासिनः
For those who kill, cause to be killed, or consent to killing, please resolve this doubt of mine, O Keśava.
यजनैर्याजनैर्देवाः स्थानेस्थाने पुरेपुरे
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: O Pārtha, that supreme power, infinite and renowned in all worlds, is the primal, all-pervading, pure, accessible through devotion, and captivating.
स्नातैः प्रमुदितैर्हृष्टैर्ब्राह्मणैः क्षत्रियैर्नृपैः
The first is Aṣṭamī, called Kālī; the second is Sarvamaṅgalā. She is Māyā, Kātyāyanī, Durgā, Cāmuṇḍā, and dear to Śaṅkara.
स्त्रीभिश्च कुरुशार्दूल तद्विधानमिदं शृणु 4.138.
She, whom the yogis meditate upon, is the supreme goddess. Bhavānī, in her various forms and names, is worshipped as Śivā.
लोहाभिहारिकं कर्म कारयेद्यावदष्टमि
On the eighth and ninth lunar days, the goddess is worshipped by gods, demons, and rākṣasas, by gandharvas, serpents, kinnaras, and humans, with sacrifices.
मण्डपं कारयेद्दिव्यं नवसप्तकरं वरम्
Even in other yugas, at the beginning of creation, she was revealed; this goddess was worshipped in ancient times by those noble ones.
मेखलात्रयसं युक्तं योन्यश्वत्थदलाभया
On the eighth day of the bright fortnight of Āśvayuja, joined with the Mūla star, that is called Mahānavamī, rare even in the three worlds.
आनीय मण्डपे तानि सर्वाण्येवाधिवासयेत्
When the sun enters Virgo, on the bright eighth day joined with the Mūla constellation, that is remembered as Mahānavamī.
ॐकाररपूर्वकैर्मन्त्रैस्तल्लिंगैर्जुहुयाद् घृतम्
He who worships Ambikā, the mother of the world, on the eighth and ninth days in the month of Āśvina, becomes free from sorrow and conquers his enemies.
स देवैः समरे क्रुद्धैर्बहुधा शकलीकृतः
The goddess, worshipped on Navamī, destroys enemies day and night with her roar and weapons, and grants the ninth fruit.
शस्त्रास्त्रमन्त्रैर्होतव्यं पायसं घृतसंयुतम्
She is holy, she is pure, she bestows righteousness and happiness; therefore, Cāmuṇḍā, the garlanded one, should always be worshipped.
लोहाभिहारिकं कर्म तेनैतदृषिभिः स्मृतम्
If, on that day, living beings such as buffaloes are offered, all of them attain heaven; there is no sin for the slayer.
भ्रामयेन्नगरे नित्यं नंदिघोषपुरस्सरम्
Not by offering bali, nor by flowers, incense, or ointments, is Vindhyavāsinī as satisfied as she is by buffaloes.
पूजयेद्राजचिह्नानि फलमाल्यानुलेपनैः 4.138.
Creatures slain here, according to rule, for the sake of Durgā, go to heaven, O Kaunteya, even if killed, because of devotion.
तस्याभिहरणाद्राज्ञो विजयः समुदाहृतः
Those whose lives depart in the courtyard of Bhavānī, O Yudhiṣṭhira, surely dwell in heaven, beloved of the best of apsarases.
यैः पूजिताः प्रयच्छन्ति कीर्तिमायुर् यशोबलम्
In all manvantaras and kalpas, O descendant of Kuru, this Navamī was always worshipped among them.
तथाच्छादय राजानं विजयारोग्यवृद्धये गन्धर्व कुलजातस्त्वं मा भूयाः कुलदूषकः
Thus, cover the king for the increase of victory and health; you, born in the Gandharva lineage, do not become a disgrace to your family.
ब्रह्मणः सत्यवाक्येन सोमस्य वरुणस्य च
By the truthful words of Brahma, Soma, and Varuna,
तेजसा चैव सूर्यस्य मुनीनां तपसा यथा
With the radiance of the sun and the austerity of sages,
स्मर त्वं राजपुत्रोऽसि कौस्तुभं च मणिं स्मर
Remember, you are a prince; remember also the Kaustubha gem.
