दृष्टो भवद्भिः संहृष्टः परपारावमर्शकः
You saw him, delighted, one who examines both sides.
शीर्णसूक्ष्मेण पत्रेण बाला मालानुमोदिताः 4.136.
With a withered, thin leaf, the children approved the garland.
हे जनाः किं न पश्यध्वं स्वामिद्रोहकरं परम्
O people, why do you not see the one who commits the greatest betrayal of his master?
चरैः किलासैः संप्राप्तः सर्वोद्वेगकरः परम्

निर्वेदकोऽस्य हृदये न किंचिदपि तिष्ठति
He is dispassionate; nothing at all remains in his heart.
रक्तदृक्काककृष्णांगं शबरं किं न पश्यत
Do you not see the Śabara, with bloodshot eyes, body dark as a crow?
बहुभिः कोष्ठकीकृत्य शरौघैः शकलीकृतम्
Having been confined by many, he was shattered by volleys of arrows.
इमां कृष्णार्द्धवदनां गृहीतां सिंदुरार्चिताम् 4.136.

गंभीरतूर्यध्वनिना प्रबुद्धां वृत्ततांडवाम्
Awakened by the deep sound of drums, she performs the complete dance.
एवं कृते न दारिद्र्यं न च दुःखं भवेन्नृणाम्
When this is done, there will be no poverty nor suffering for people.

रक्षाबन्धनवर्णनम् तं शृण्वेकाग्रमनसा समासाद्गदितं मया

रक्षाबंधप्रभावेन दानवेन्द्रो जितो महान्
By the power of the tying of the protective thread, the great lord of the demons was conquered.
भार्गवेणैवमुक्तास्ते दानवा विगतज्वराः
Thus addressed by Bhargava, the demons became free from distress.
एष प्रभावो रक्षायाः कथितस्ते युधिष्ठिर
This is the power of the protective thread, as told to you, Yudhishthira.
कस्यां तिथौ कदा देव एतन्मे वक्तुमर्हसि
On which lunar day, and when, O god, should this be performed? Please tell me this.
यथा यथा हि भगवान्विचित्राणि प्रभाषते
Just as the Blessed Lord speaks of various rites,
संप्राप्ते श्रावणे चैव पौर्णमास्यां दिनोदये ।। 4.137.
When the full moon of Śrāvaṇa arrives, at sunrise,
स्नानं कुर्वीत मतिमाञ्श्रुतिस्मृतिविधानत
A wise person should bathe according to the injunctions of the scriptures and tradition.
उपाकर्मादिवेदोक्तमृषीणां चैव तर्पणम्
Then, as prescribed in the Vedas, one should perform the upākarman and the offering of water to the sages.
शूद्राणां मंत्रसहितं स्नानं दानं च शस्यते
For Śūdras, bathing with mantras and giving gifts is recommended.
ततोपराह्नसमये रक्षापोटलिकाः शुभाः
Then, in the afternoon, auspicious protective amulets should be prepared.
वस्त्रैर्विचित्रैः कार्पासैः क्षौमैर्वा मलवर्जितैः
They should be made from various clean cotton or silk cloths, free from impurity.
