रतस्थयोस्तयोर्जातं दिव्यवर्षशतं यदा
When a divine hundred years had passed while those two were engaged in union,
मूत्रोदकात्समुत्तस्थौ नारी निर्दारितोदरा 4.136.

कपालमालाभरणा बद्धपिंडोर्ध्वपिंडिका
Adorned with a garland of skulls, with a bound and raised mass,
व्याघ्रचर्मांबरधरा रणत्किंकिणिमेखला
Wearing a garment of tiger skin, with a girdle of jingling bells,
उत्तालतालमबला नृत्यंति च हसंति च
The strong women, with tall stature, dance and laugh.
कपालखट्वाङ्गधरा गजचर्मावगुण्ठिताः
Bearing skulls and clubs, covered with elephant hides.
अनुगम्यमानो बहुभिर्भूतैरतिभयंकरैः
He was followed by many beings, exceedingly terrifying in form.
एकीभूतैः क्षणेनैव तौ भवानीभवोद्भवौ
In a moment, those two—Bhavānī and Bhava—became united as one.
कल्याणि पश्य पश्यैतौ मत्त्वदङ्गसमुद्भवौ
O Auspicious One, see, see these two, who have arisen from your own body.
भ्रातृभांडौ यथा देवि तद्वदेतौ मतौ मम
O Goddess, just as brothers quarrel, so too do these two, in my opinion.
भ्रातृभांडा भूतमाता तथैवोदकसेविका
The Mother of beings, like a quarrelsome sister, also serves water.
भुक्त्वार्होपगतां चैतां जरत्तरुतले स्थिताम् 4.136.
Having enjoyed what was offered, she remained beneath the old tree.
चन्दनेन समालभ्य पुष्पधूपैरथार्च्य ताम्
Anointing her with sandalwood and worshipping her with flowers and incense,
य एवं कुरुते देवि भक्तिभावेन भावितः
Whoever does this, O Goddess, filled with devotion,
न शाकिन्यो गृहे तस्य न पिशाचा न राक्षसाः
No witches, nor ghosts, nor demons will dwell in his house.
पुरुषैः पुरुषव्याघ्र यत्तन्मे वक्तुमर्हसि
O tiger among men, you ought to tell me what is to be done by men.
नामभेदैः क्रियाभेदैः कालभेदैश्च पूज्यते
She is worshipped under various names, with different rites, and at different times.
प्रतिपत्प्रभृति ज्येष्ठे यावत्पंचदशी तिथिः
From the first lunar day onward in Jyeṣṭha, up to the fifteenth tithi,
विकर्मफलनिर्देशः पांडवानां विडंबनम्
The indication of the fruit of wrong action is a mockery of the Pāṇḍavas.
विश्वास्यधनलोभेन संध्यायां निहतः पथि
Out of trust and greed for wealth, he was slain on the road at dusk.
दृष्टो भवद्भिः संहृष्टः परपारावमर्शकः
You saw him, delighted, one who examines both sides.
शीर्णसूक्ष्मेण पत्रेण बाला मालानुमोदिताः 4.136.
With a withered, thin leaf, the children approved the garland.
हे जनाः किं न पश्यध्वं स्वामिद्रोहकरं परम्
O people, why do you not see the one who commits the greatest betrayal of his master?
चरैः किलासैः संप्राप्तः सर्वोद्वेगकरः परम्
He arrived with spies and lepers, causing the utmost distress to all.
प्रेक्षकैर्वेष्टितः स्तेनो रटत्येष विमोहितः
Surrounded by onlookers, this thief shouts out, bewildered.
सितकेशं सितश्मश्रुसितांबरधरं द्विजम्
A twice-born man with white hair, white beard, and clad in white garments.
गृहान्निष्क्रम्यतां रंडा वृद्धो भूत्वाप्यसौ स्त्रियाः
Let the old man, even having become aged, be driven out of the house by the woman.
भैरवाभरणोत्ताला व्यालयज्ञोपवीतिनः
Wearing terrifying ornaments, with serpentine sacred threads.
निर्वेदकोऽस्य हृदये न किंचिदपि तिष्ठति
He is dispassionate; nothing at all remains in his heart.
रक्तदृक्काककृष्णांगं शबरं किं न पश्यत
Do you not see the Śabara, with bloodshot eyes, body dark as a crow?
