अस्मिन्वसंतसमये शुक्लपक्षे त्रयोदशी
In this season of spring, on the thirteenth day of the bright fortnight,
एतेन बीजभूतेन जगद्वर्णिष्यतेऽखिलम्
By this, which is the seed, the entire world will be described.
जगाम हिमवच्छृंगं कैलासं पार्वतीप्रियः
The beloved of Parvati went to the peak of the Himalayas, to Kailasa.
पूजाविधानमपरं कथयामि शृणुण्व तत्
I will tell you another method of worship; listen to it now.
सिन्दूरजनितैरंगैरतिप्रीति समन्वितम् । कामदेवं वसंतं च वाजिवक्त्रं झषध्वजम् ।। 4.135.
With limbs adorned with vermilion, filled with great delight, worship Kamadeva, Vasanta, the horse-faced one, and the fish-bannered one.
सौवर्णं वा महाराज वार्क्षं चित्रमथापि वा
O great king, whether of gold, or of wood, or even painted,
गन्धर्वगीतवादित्रप्रेक्षणीयसमाकुलम्
Let it be surrounded by Gandharva songs, music, and delightful spectacles.
मध्याह्ने भोजयेद्भक्त्या भक्ष्यैर्धूपैःस्रगंबरैः
At midday, with devotion, offer food, incense, garlands, and garments.
नमो वामाय कामाय देवदेवाय मूर्तये
Homage to the beautiful, to the desirous, to the god of gods, to the embodied one.
कृत्वैवमर्चयित्वा तु देवदेवमनोभवम्
Having done thus and worshipped the god of gods, the mind-born one,
नानाप्रकारान्भक्ष्यांश्च कामो मे प्रीयतामिति
May Kama be pleased with me by these various kinds of offerings.
स्वपतिं पूजयेन्नारी वस्त्रमालाविभूषणैः
A woman should worship her husband with garments, garlands, and ornaments.
मन्मथायतने तस्मिन्यजमानः सुहृद्वृतः
In that temple of Manmatha, the sacrificer, surrounded by friends,
कर्पूरकुंकुमक्षोदगंधतांबूलसर्जनैः
With camphor, saffron powder, fragrant betel, and areca nut offerings,
दीपप्रज्वालनैर्नृत्यैः प्रेक्षणैः प्रेक्षणोत्सवैः 4.135.
With the lighting of lamps, dances, spectacles, and festivals of viewing,
वसंतसमये प्राप्ते हृष्टस्तुष्टो नृपः पुरे
When spring arrives, the king in the city is joyful and content.
सुभिक्षं क्षेममारोग्यं यशः श्रीः सौख्यमुत्तमम्
There is abundance, safety, health, fame, prosperity, and supreme happiness.
तुष्यते तु भृशं देवो द्वादशार्द्धार्द्धलोचनः
The god with twelve and a half eyes is greatly pleased.
चन्द्रसूर्यादिका सर्वे ग्रहा ब्रह्मर्षयस्तथा
All the planets, beginning with the Moon and the Sun, as well as the Brahmarshis,
असुरा यातुधानाश्च सुपर्णाः पतगा नगाः
Asuras, Yatudhanas, Suparnas, birds, and trees,
चैत्रोत्सवे सकललोकमनोनिवासं कामं वसंतमलयाद्रिमरुत्सहायम्
During the spring festival, with the Malaya breeze as his ally, Kama dwells as the delight of all the worlds and the abode of their minds.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिर रसंवादे मदनमहोत्सववर्णनं नाम पञ्चत्रिंशदुत्तरशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred and thirty-fifth chapter, named 'Description of the Great Festival of Madana,' in the dialogue between Sri Krishna and Yudhishthira, in the Uttaraparvan of the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana.
भूतमात्र्युत्सववर्णनम् गायन्नृत्यन्हसँल्लोकः सर्वतः परिधावति
Describing the festival of the Mothers of beings: Singing, dancing, laughing, the people run about everywhere.
उन्मत्तवत्प्रलपति क्षितौ पतति मत्तवत्
They babble like the intoxicated, fall to the ground like the drunk.
मुखांगभंगान्कुरुते लोके वातगृहीतवत्
They make gestures with face and limbs, as if seized by the wind.
किमेष शास्त्रनिर्दिष्टो मार्गः किमुत लौकिकः
Is this the path prescribed by scripture, or is it worldly custom?
आस्तिकः श्रद्दधानश्च भवतीति मतिर्मम
My opinion is that one becomes a believer and faithful by this.
पार्वत्या सहितः पार्थ मन्दरे चारुकन्दरे
Together with Parvati, O Partha, in the lovely cave of Mandara,
हंसोन्नतगतिं चारुकुम्भभ्राजिकुचद्वयम्
With the gait of a swan, and two beautiful, radiant, pitcher-like breasts,
दग्धकामोऽपि च हरः संदीप्तमदनोऽभवत्
Even though Kama was burned, Hara became inflamed with desire.
