श्रीमहादेव उवाच वसंते कारयिष्यंति मंडिते त्रिदशांगणे
Śrī Mahādeva said: 'In spring, they will perform (the festival) in the adorned courtyard of the gods.'
नेत्रपट्टापटच्छन्नां पद्मरागविभूषि ताम्
She will be covered with a cloth over her eyes, adorned with padmarāga gems.
विचित्राभरणाभाभिराभासितदिगंतराम्
With the radiance of various ornaments, she will illuminate all directions.
मालां विद्याधराक्रातां प्रांतरोपितदर्पणाम्
A garland seized by Vidyādharas, with a mirror placed at the edge.
अग्निकार्यं ततः कृत्वा क्षिप्त्वा चैव दिशां बलिम्
Then, after performing the fire ritual and offering oblations to the directions,
मूलमंत्रेण देवानां प्रोक्तं दोलाधिरोहणम् 4.133.
The ascent onto the swing, as prescribed for the gods, is to be done with the root mantra.
गंभीरांतरनिर्घोषैर्ललनानां च निस्वनैः
With deep, resonant sounds and the voices of the women,
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे नारीं दोहनाय निकुट्टकाम्
Meanwhile, a woman is brought for milking, eager for the task.
सुवर्णशृंगिणा प्रोक्तं स्मितदंतांशुकर्बुरम्
She is described as having golden horns, her teeth shining with a smile.
जलसंक्लिन्नवसनो रशनादाममंडितः
Her garments are soaked with water, and she is adorned with a girdle of strings.
कुंकुमक्षोदतांबूलपुष्प मालाकुलो जनः
People are adorned with garlands of saffron, camphor, and betel flowers.
पीतशीतजलाघात ताडितोऽपि जनः सुखम्
Even when struck by splashes of cool yellow water, people feel delight.
एवं ये तु गमिष्यंति नरा वर्त्मतया गतम्
In this way, those men who proceed along the path that has been traveled—
पुत्रपौत्रसमा युक्ता धनधान्यसमायुताः
—are blessed with sons and grandsons, and endowed with wealth and grain.
प्राप्ते वसंतसमये सुरसत्तमानामान्दोलनं सुरवराननुकुर्वते ये
When the spring season arrives, the best of the gods sway, imitating the foremost of the gods.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठि रसंवाद आन्दोलकविधिवर्णनं नाम त्रयस्त्रिंशदुत्तरशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana, in the Uttaraparvan, in the dialogue between Sri Krishna and Yudhishthira, is the one hundred thirty-third chapter, named 'Description of the Ritual of Swinging.'
दमनकांदोलकरथयात्रामहोत्सववर्णनम् स्थिरो भूत्वा निबोधेदं त्वं हि मूर्तविदां वरः
Description of the great festival of the Damanaka, Andolaka, and chariot procession. Stand firm and understand this, for you are the best among those who know forms.
चैत्रे त्रिनेत्रसंभूतमलयाख्यमहागिरौ
In the month of Chaitra, on the great mountain called Malaya, which arose from the three-eyed one—
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु भ्रममाणो यदृच्छया
At that very time, wandering by chance—
दृष्ट्वापूर्वं शिवं शांतं सुरेशैः सर्वतो वृतम्
He saw, for the first time, peaceful Shiva, surrounded on all sides by the lords of the gods.
तमुपासीनमालक्ष्य भगवान्भगनेत्रहा
Beholding him seated, the blessed one, destroyer of Bhaga’s eye—
वसंतो नाम कोऽप्येष कामस्य दयितः सखा
There is someone called Vasantā, a dear friend of Kāma.
मलयानिलयुक्तेन तेन विश्वं वशीकृतम्
With the wind from Malaya, he brought the whole world under his sway.
पोषयामास विजयं मन्मथस्य पुरेपुरे
He nourished the victory of Manmatha in every city.
कोयं च डिम्बो वा ब्रह्मा कामस्त्रिजगतां प्रभुः
Who is this child, or is he Brahma? Or is he Kāma, the lord of the three worlds?
ऊर्ध्वबाहुस्तु नर्नर्ति तालदत्तपदक्रमः 4.134.
With arms raised, a man dances, his steps keeping the rhythm given by the clapping of hands.
गायंतश्च परीहृष्टास्ते चाप्यायांति यांति च
They sing, filled with joy, approaching and departing.
तेऽपि गायंति नृत्यंति हसंति स्मरतारकाः
They too sing, dance, laugh—the stars of love.
विटं पश्यंति कुलटाः प्रारब्धोचितपण्डिताः
Courtesans, skilled in their chosen arts, look upon the gambler.
एवमेतत्त्रिलोकेऽस्मिन्निति व्यवसितो जनः
Thus, in these three worlds, people are resolved in this way.
