सानंदं नंदनवने आर्द्रया सहितो यथा
Joyfully, as in the Nandana grove, accompanied by Ardra,
उन्मादयन्वने पुण्ये विद्याधरगणान्बहून्
Delighting many hosts of Vidyadharas in that sacred forest,
संतानपारिजातोत्थां बद्ध्वा स माधवीलताम्
He tied a garland of Madhavi creeper, sprung from the Parijata of the lineage,
गीतमांदोलकारूढस्तद्गायंत्यमर स्त्रियः
Mounted on a swing, singing, the celestial women sang there.
तं दृष्ट्वाष्टापदनिभा भवानी प्राह शंकरम्
Seeing him, resembling a chessboard, Bhavani spoke to Shankara:
आदोलकं मम कृते कारयस्व स्वलंकृतम् 4.133.
Make a swing for me, beautifully adorned.
तद्गौरीवचनं रम्यं श्रुत्वा गोवृषभध्वजः
Hearing Gauri's charming words, the bull-bannered god,
स्तंभद्वयं रोपयित्वा इष्टापूर्तमयं दृढम्
Planted two pillars, firm and made of merit and fulfillment,
वासुकिं दंडकस्थाने बद्ध्वा तांतवसप्रभम्
Tied Vasuki at the place of the staff, shining like woven threads,
कृमिकार्पासकौशेयवस्त्रैः संवेष्टितं नवैः
Wrapped with new cloths of cotton, wool, and silk,
रचयित्वा विचित्रां तां दोलां चैलाजिनोत्तराम्
He fashioned that wondrous swing, covered above with cloth and deerskin.
तत्रारूढस्तु यावत्स सौम्यसोमविभूषणः
There, adorned with gentle moonlight, he mounted the swing.
वामपार्श्वे तु विजया दक्षिणेन जया भवेत्
On the left side is Vijayā, and on the right is Jayā.
आदोलयंत्या पार्वत्या सहितं स गदाक्षरम्
With Pārvatī, who is being gently swung, along with the syllable 'gaḍa'.
जगुर्गंधर्वपतयो ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः
The lords of the Gandharvas sang, and groups of Apsarases danced.
चेलुः कुलाचलाः सर्वे चुक्षुभुः सप्त सागराः 4.133.
All the great mountains moved, and the seven oceans were agitated.
आलोक्य व्याकुलं लोकं देवाः शक्रपुरोगमाः
Seeing the world in turmoil, the gods led by Śakra,
उपारमस्व भगवन्भवतः क्रीडयानया
said, 'O Lord, please desist from this play of yours.'
गीर्वाणगीर्भिः संहृष्टः शंकरो लोकशंकरः
Śaṃkara, the benefactor of the world, delighted by the words of the gods,
उवाच वचनं पार्थ सुरसार्थस्य पश्यतः
spoke these words, O Pārtha, as the assembly of gods looked on.
श्रीमहादेव उवाच वसंते कारयिष्यंति मंडिते त्रिदशांगणे
Śrī Mahādeva said: 'In spring, they will perform (the festival) in the adorned courtyard of the gods.'
नेत्रपट्टापटच्छन्नां पद्मरागविभूषि ताम्
She will be covered with a cloth over her eyes, adorned with padmarāga gems.
विचित्राभरणाभाभिराभासितदिगंतराम्
With the radiance of various ornaments, she will illuminate all directions.
मालां विद्याधराक्रातां प्रांतरोपितदर्पणाम्
A garland seized by Vidyādharas, with a mirror placed at the edge.
अग्निकार्यं ततः कृत्वा क्षिप्त्वा चैव दिशां बलिम्
Then, after performing the fire ritual and offering oblations to the directions,
मूलमंत्रेण देवानां प्रोक्तं दोलाधिरोहणम् 4.133.
The ascent onto the swing, as prescribed for the gods, is to be done with the root mantra.
गंभीरांतरनिर्घोषैर्ललनानां च निस्वनैः
With deep, resonant sounds and the voices of the women,
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे नारीं दोहनाय निकुट्टकाम्
Meanwhile, a woman is brought for milking, eager for the task.
सुवर्णशृंगिणा प्रोक्तं स्मितदंतांशुकर्बुरम्
She is described as having golden horns, her teeth shining with a smile.
जलसंक्लिन्नवसनो रशनादाममंडितः
Her garments are soaked with water, and she is adorned with a girdle of strings.
