एवं ढौंढितमात्रस्य स दोषः प्रशमं व्रजेत्
In this way, as soon as the evil is driven away, its effect will subside.
प्रवृत्ते माधवे मासि प्रतिपद्भास्करोदये
When the month of Madhu begins, at sunrise on the first day,
वंदयेद्धोलिकाभूतिं सर्वदुष्टोपशांतये
One should worship the ashes of Holika for the pacification of all evils.
मंडिते चर्चिते चैव उपलिप्ते गृहाजिरे
In a courtyard that is decorated, honored, and smeared,
तन्मध्ये स्थापयेत्पीठं शुक्लवस्त्रोत्तर च्छदम्
In the midst of that, place a seat covered with a white cloth.
साक्षतं सहिरण्यं च सितचन्दनचर्चितम् 4.132.
Place there grains with gold, anointed with white sandalwood.
आसने चोपविष्टस्य ब्रह्मघोषेण भारत
When seated on the seat, O Bharata, with the sound of sacred chants,
पद्मरागोत्तरपटा श्रेष्ठांशुकविभूषिता
With upper garments of lotus-red silk, adorned with the finest cloth,
चर्चापयित्वा श्रीखंडमायुरारोग्यवृद्धये
After anointing with fragrant sandalwood for the increase of life and health,
मनोभवस्य सा पूजा ऋषिभिः संप्रदर्शिता
This worship of the god of desire has been shown by the sages.
सत्यं हृदिस्थकामस्य तत्पूर्तिर्जायतेञ्जसा
Truly, the wish of the one whose desire abides in the heart is fulfilled directly.
दद्याद्दानं यथाशक्त्या कामो मे प्रीयतामिति
One should give charity according to one's ability, saying, 'May my desire be pleased.'
प्राश्नीयात्प्रथमं चान्नं ततो भुञ्जीत कामतः
One should first taste the food, and then eat as one wishes.
अनायासेन सिध्यंति तस्य सर्वे मनोरथाः
All his wishes are fulfilled without effort.
पुत्रपौत्रसमायुक्तः सुखं तिष्ठति मानवः
A man, surrounded by sons and grandsons, lives happily.
पुण्या पवित्रा जयदा सर्वविघ्रविनाशिनी 4.132.
This rite is holy, pure, brings victory, and destroys all obstacles.
वृत्ते तुषारसमये सितपञ्चदश्यां प्रातर्वसन्तसमये समुपस्थिते च
When the cold season has ended, on the bright fifteenth day, at dawn, as the springtime arrives—
आन्दोलकविधिवर्णनम् दमनेन कथं लोकैः पूज्यंते नाकनायकाः
Description of the custom of swinging: How is it that, through restraint, the lords of heaven are worshipped by people?
दोलांदोलनमाहात्म्यं रथयात्रामहोत्सवम्
The greatness of swinging on the swing, and the grand festival of the chariot procession—
यदेतद्भवता पृष्टं तच्छृणुष्व वदामि ते ।। ३४ पुरा सुराणामावासे मंदरे चारुकंदरे
What you have asked, listen—I will tell you: Long ago, in the abode of the gods, on Mandara, the beautiful mountain—
तस्य गंधमनाघ्रेयमाघ्राय सुरयोषितः
There, the divine women, having smelled a fragrance never before perceived—
ऋषयो नियमांस्त्यक्त्वा प्राद्रवंत गृहान्प्रति ।। न वेदाध्ययने ध्याने रतिस्तेषां बभूव ह
The sages, abandoning their vows, rushed back to their homes; they no longer found delight in study of the Vedas or in meditation.
अपराधाद्विघटितं यद्बभूव प्रिये परम्
Because of an offense, a great disruption occurred, dearest.
गंधेनाकुलितं लोकं दृष्ट्वा ब्रह्मा तमब्रवीत्
Seeing the world disturbed by the fragrance, Brahmā spoke to him—
ब्रह्मोवाच जातस्त्वं लोकदमनान्नूनं दमनको मया
Brahmā said: Surely, you have been born among those who restrain the world, and so I name you Damanaka.
यत्संतस्त्वनुमन्यंते सर्वा तिशयवर्जितम् 4.133.
Whatever the virtuous approve, let it be entirely free from excess.
एकस्याप्यपकारं यः करोति स नराधमः
He who harms even a single person is the lowest of men.
दृष्टार्थबाधकं कर्म न कर्तव्यं कथंचन
One must never perform an act that visibly causes harm.
ततः स्वयं प्रभजति दैवे पित्र्ये च कर्मणि
Then, on his own, he devotes himself to actions for the divine and for the ancestors.
स्वभाव एष मे ब्रह्मंस्त्वया सृष्टः पुरा विभो
This is my nature, O Brahman, which you created long ago, O Lord.
