कृतस्नानः श्वेतपट्टं ब्राह्मणाय निवेदयेत्
Having bathed, one should offer a white cloth to a Brahmin.
न तस्य ग्रहपीडा स्यान्न च बंधुजनक्षयः
He will not suffer affliction from the planets, nor will there be loss of relatives.
सूर्यग्रहे सूर्यनाम सदा मंत्रेषु कीर्तयेत् १८ य इदं शृणुयान्नित्यं श्रावयेद्वापि मानवः
At a solar eclipse, one should always recite the name of the Sun in the mantras; whoever listens to or causes others to listen to this regularly—
चन्द्रग्रहे नृप रविग्रहणे जपन्मां मंत्रैरिमैः समभिमंत्र्य शुभोदकुंभात् 4.125.
At a lunar or solar eclipse, O king, having recited these mantras over the auspicious water-pot—

सांभरायणीव्रतवर्णनम् एतन्मे ब्रूहि गोविन्द परं कौतूहलं हि मे

नान्यदुष्कृष्टमुद्दिष्टं तज्ज्ञैरनशनात्परम् २ यादृग्रूपश्च भगवांश्चिंतनीयो जनार्दनः
O Govinda, tell me this; I am greatly curious.
निर्धूतमलदोषश्च स्नातो नियतमानसः
Nothing else is prescribed by the wise, except abstinence from food; and in what form should the blessed Janardana be contemplated?
प्रणिपातैः स्तवैः पुण्यैर्गंधैर्धूपैस्तु पूजयेत् समर्प्य ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च देवार्चाद्युपयोगि च
One who is purified of impurities and faults, who has bathed and has a controlled mind,
बंधु पुत्रकलत्रेषु क्षेत्रधान्यधनादिषु
should worship with prostrations, hymns, auspicious fragrances, and incense, and after offering, give to Brahmins what is suitable for divine worship.
मित्राण्यमित्रान्मध्यस्थान्परान्स्वांश्च पुनः पुनः
Among relatives, sons, wives, fields, grains, wealth, and so on,
ततश्च प्रयतः कुर्यादुत्सर्गं सर्वकर्मणाम्
among friends, enemies, neutrals, strangers, and one's own people, again and again,
परित्यजाम्यहं भोगांस्त्यजामि सुहृदोऽखिलान्
then, with effort, one should renounce all actions.
स्रग्भूषणादिकं गेयं दानमासनमेव च 4.126.
I abandon pleasures; I give up all friends.
नैमित्तिकास्तथा काम्याः श्राद्धधर्मादयोज्झिताः
Garlands, ornaments, songs, gifts, seats as well,
पद्भ्यां कराभ्यां विहरन्कुर्वाणः कर्म चोद्वहन्
occasional and desired rites, funeral duties, and other religious acts are to be left aside.
नभसि प्राणिनो ये च ये जले ये च भूतले
Moving with feet and hands, performing actions and carrying burdens,
धान्यादिषु च वस्त्रेषु शयनेष्वासनेषु च
those living in the sky, those in water, and those on earth,
न मेऽस्ति बांधवः कश्चिद्विष्णुं मुक्त्वा जगद्गुरुम्
in grains and other things, in garments, in beds and seats,
पार्श्वतो मूर्ध्नि हृदये बाहुभ्यां चैव चक्षुषोः
I have no relative except Vishnu, the Guru of the world.
इति सर्वं समुत्सृज्य धृत्वा सर्वेशमच्युतम्
At the side, on the head, in the heart, with the arms, and with the eyes,
दक्षिणाग्रेषु दर्भेषु शेते वै प्राक्छिरास्तथा
Thus, having renounced everything and holding the Lord, the infallible one,
विष्णुं जिष्णुं हृषीकेशं केशवं मधुसूदनम्
Viṣṇu, the victorious, Hṛṣīkeśa, Keśava, Madhusūdana.
वाराहं यज्ञपुरुषं पुंडरीकाक्षमच्युतम् 4.126.
Vārāha, the sacrificial person, Puṇḍarīkākṣa, the imperishable.
पद्मनाभमजं श्रीशं दामोदरमधोक्षजम्
Padmanābha, the unborn, Śrīśa, Dāmodara, Madhokṣaja.
चक्रिणं गदिनं शांतं शंखिनं गरुडध्वजम्
The wielder of the discus, the holder of the mace, the tranquil one, the bearer of the conch, the one whose banner is Garuḍa.
अहमस्मि जगन्नाथ मयि वासं कुरु द्रुतम्
I am the Lord of the universe; quickly make your abode in me.
अयं विष्णुरयं शौरिरयं कृष्णः पुरो मम
This is Viṣṇu, this is Śauri, this is Kṛṣṇa before me.
एष पश्यतु मामीशः पश्याम्यहमधोक्षजम्
Let this Lord see me; I see Madhokṣaja.
आसीत सुखदुःखेषु समो मित्राहितेषु च
Let him be equal in happiness and sorrow, and towards friends and foes.
