After giving a calf, gold, and other items, one should ask forgiveness for all.
She becomes fortunate, endowed with happiness, and bears many children.
Therefore, it must be performed by one desiring children, prosperity, and happiness.
She who performs the bath known as Rudra, with faith, approved by the best twice-born, and with bowed limbs.
Thus, in the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana, in the Uttaraparva, in the dialogue between Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Yudhiṣṭhira, is the description of the rite of Rudra bath, the one hundred and twenty-fourth chapter.
The description of the rite of bathing during lunar and solar eclipses.
I shall now describe that bath, accompanied by mantras and medicinal herbs.
When a lunar eclipse occurs, having performed the recitation by a Brahmin—
Before the eclipse, one must gather the necessary herbs and related items.
From the meeting of elephant and horse paths, from anthills, from lakes, and from cow pastures—
Pañcagavya in pots, and indeed the five gems as well—
Crystal, white sandalwood, sacred water, and mustard seeds—placing all these in the pots, one should invoke the gods.
All the oceans, rivers, sacred fords, rainclouds, and lakes—
He who wields the thunderbolt, the god considered the lord of the Adityas—
The direct lord of the hosts of demons, shining like the wind of dissolution—
He who creates the drop, who is the drop, who bears the bow Pinaka, who rides the bull—
All beings in the three worlds, both immobile and mobile—
With such pots, properly invoked and filled with water, one should worship the chosen deities and Brahmins with gifts of cloth and cows.
Then, having inscribed these very mantras, adorned with gold, O best of men, they should be placed upon the head of the sacrificer.
When the lunar eclipse has ended, and the auspicious gift of a cow has been made, with the pots filled with the prescribed substances—
Having bathed, one should offer a white cloth to a Brahmin.
He will not suffer affliction from the planets, nor will there be loss of relatives.
At a solar eclipse, one should always recite the name of the Sun in the mantras; whoever listens to or causes others to listen to this regularly—
At a lunar or solar eclipse, O king, having recited these mantras over the auspicious water-pot—
Thus ends the one hundred and twenty-fifth chapter, named 'Description of the Ritual Bath during Lunar and Solar Eclipses,' in the Uttaraparva of the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana, in the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Yudhishthira.
Description of the Sambharayani Vow.
O Govinda, tell me this; I am greatly curious.
Nothing else is prescribed by the wise, except abstinence from food; and in what form should the blessed Janardana be contemplated?
One who is purified of impurities and faults, who has bathed and has a controlled mind,
should worship with prostrations, hymns, auspicious fragrances, and incense, and after offering, give to Brahmins what is suitable for divine worship.
