समं श्वशुरजामात्रौ द्वादशेषु विषादिनौ
Together, father-in-law and brother-in-law, both were distressed for twelve days.
शृण्वंति सुधियो नित्यं ते वसंति हरेः पदम्
Those wise ones who always listen dwell in the abode of Hari.
प्रतिकूले हरौ तस्मिन्यास्यन्ति निरयान्बहून्
Those who are opposed to Hari will go to many hells.
धर्मो यज्ञो नृपश्चौरः सर्वे लक्ष्मीप्रियंकराः
Dharma, sacrifice, king, and thief—all are dear to Lakshmi.
मातृभ्यो देवताभ्यश्च स्वधा स्वाहेति वै मखः
To the mothers and to the gods, the offering is indeed 'svadha' and 'svaha' in the sacrifice.
द्वयोर्हन्ता हि चोरः स ते सर्वे धर्मकिंकराः
Of the two, the thief is the killer; all these are servants of dharma.
सत्यहीनस्य तत्साधोर्धनं यत्तद्ग्रहे स्थितम्
The wealth of that virtuous one, devoid of truth, which was kept in the house,
वासोलंकरणादीनि विक्रीय बुभुजे किल
He sold garments, ornaments, and the like, and indeed consumed them.
अथैकस्मिन्दिने कन्या भोजनाच्छादनं विना
Then, on one day, the daughter was without food and clothing.
प्रार्थयंतं जगन्नाथं दृष्ट्वा सा प्रार्थयद्धरिम्
Seeing him praying to the Lord of the universe, she too prayed to Hari.
आगच्छत्वर्चयिष्यामि भवंतमिति वाचये 3.2.29.
'Come, I will worship you,' she said aloud.
मात्रा निर्भर्त्सितेयंतं कालं कुत्र स्थिता शुभे
Scolded by her mother, she wondered, 'O auspicious one, where shall I stay at this time?'
कलौ प्रत्यक्ष फलदः सर्वदा क्रियते नरैः
In the Kali age, actions always yield immediate results for people.
देशमायातु जनकः स्वामी च मम कामना
Let my father and master come to this land, as I desire.
शीलपालस्य गुप्तस्य गेहे प्राप्ता धनार्थिनी
The woman seeking wealth arrived at the house of Śīlapāla, the protector and guardian.
इति श्रुत्वा शीलपालः पंचनिष्कं धनं ददौ
Hearing this, Śīlapāla gave five niṣkas of wealth.
इत्युक्त्वा सोऽनृणो भूत्वा गयाश्राद्धाय संययौ
Having said this and becoming free from debt, he went to perform the ancestral rites at Gayā.
लीलावती सह तया भक्त्याकार्षीत्प्रपूजनम्
Līlāvatī, together with her, performed the worship with devotion.
नर्मदातीरनगरे नृपः सुष्वाप मंदिरे उवाच विप्ररूपेण बोधयञ्छ्लक्ष्णया गिरा
In the city on the banks of the Narmadā, the king slept in his palace; a brāhmaṇa appeared and awakened him with gentle words.
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ राजेन्द्र तौ साधू परिमोचय
Rise, rise, O king! Release those two virtuous ones.
इत्येवं भूपतिश्चैव विप्ररूपेण बोधितः 3.2.29.
Thus the king was awakened by the brāhmaṇa in this way.
विस्मितः सहसोत्थाय दध्यौ ब्रह्म सनातनम्
Astonished, he quickly rose and contemplated the eternal Brahman.
महामन्त्री च भूपालं प्राह सत्येन भो द्विज अतस्तौ हि समानीय संपृच्छ विधिवन्नृप
The chief minister addressed the king, 'O brāhmaṇa, bring those two here and question them properly, O king.'
आनीय साधुं पप्रच्छ सत्यमालंब्य भूपतिः
Having brought the virtuous one, the king questioned him, relying on the truth.
वाणिज्यार्थं महाराज वाणिज्यं जीविकावयोः
For the sake of trade, O great king, we both live by commerce.
मणिमुक्तादि विक्रेतुं क्रेतुं वा तव पत्तने
To sell or buy gems and pearls in your city.
प्रतिकूले विधौ को वा दशां नाप्नोति वै पुमान्
Who among men does not experience misfortune when fate is adverse?
आवां न चौरो राजेंद्र तत्त्वतस्त्वं विचारय
We are not thieves, O king; consider the truth yourself.
छेदयित्वा दृढं पाशं लोमशातिमकारयत्
Having cut the strong bonds, he freed Lomaśa.
नगरे पूजयामास वस्त्राभूषणवाहनैः
In the city, he was honored with garments, ornaments, and vehicles.
