पौषफाल्गुनयोर्मध्ये प्रातःस्नायी भवेन्नरः
Between the months of Pauṣa and Phālguna, a man should bathe in the morning.
त्रिंशद्दिनानि पुण्याणि मकरस्थे दिवाकरे
For thirty days, while the sun is in Capricorn, the acts are meritorious.
माघमासमिमं पूर्णं स्थाप्येहं देवमाधवम् 4.122.
During the entire month of Māgha, one should establish Lord Mādhava here.
अप्रावृतशरीरस्तु यः कष्टं स्नानमाचरेत्
He who, with uncovered body, undertakes the difficult bath—
तत्र स्नात्वा शुभे तीर्थे दत्त्वा शिरसि वै मृदम्
There, having bathed at the auspicious ford and placed clay upon the head—
पितॄन्संतर्प्य तत्रस्थो ह्यवतीर्य ततो जलात्
Having satisfied the ancestors at that place, and then having emerged from the water—
शङ्खचक्रधरं देवं माधवं नाम पूजयेत्
One should worship the god Mādhava, bearer of the conch and discus, by name.
भूशय्याब्रह्मचर्येण शक्तः स्नानं समाचरेत्
One who is able should perform the bath with a bed on the ground and with celibacy.
अवश्यमपि कर्तव्यं माघे स्नानमिति श्रुतिः
The scripture declares that bathing in Māgha is absolutely to be performed.
तिलस्नायी तिलोद्वर्ती तिलभोक्ता तिलोदकी
He who bathes with sesame, anoints with sesame, eats sesame, and drinks sesame water—
तैलस्यामलकानां च तीर्थे देयानि नित्यशः
Oil and emblic myrobalan should always be given at the ford.
एवं स्नानावसाने तु भोज्यं देयमवारितम्
Thus, at the conclusion of the bath, food should be given without restriction.
कंबलाजिनरत्नानि वासांसि विविधानि च ।। 4.122.
Blankets, deer skins, jewels, and various garments—
उपानहौ तथा गुप्तं मोदकैः पापमोचकैः
Likewise, shoes, and secretly, sweets that remove sin.
अगम्यागमनस्तेयपापेभ्यश्च परिग्रहात्
By association with sins such as approaching the forbidden, theft, and others, impurity arises.
पितृभिः पितामहैः सार्द्धं तथैव प्रपितामहैः
Together with fathers, grandfathers, and likewise great-grandfathers,
एकविंशकुलैः सार्द्धं भोगान्भुक्त्वा यथेप्सितान्
Along with twenty-one families, having enjoyed pleasures as desired,
यो माघमास्युषसि सूर्य्यकराभिताम्रे स्नानं समाचरति चारुनदीप्रवाहे
Whoever, at dawn in the month of Māgha, bathes in the charming current of the river, reddened by the sun's rays,
नित्यस्नानविधिवर्णनम् तस्मात्कायविशुद्ध्यर्थं स्नानमादौ विधीयते
Therefore, for the sake of bodily purity, bathing is prescribed at the beginning.
अनुद्धतैरुद्धतैर्वा जलैः स्नानं समाचरेत्
One should bathe with water, whether calm or agitated.
नमो नारायणायेति मूलमन्त्र उदाहृतः
The root mantra 'Namo Nārāyaṇāya' is to be recited.
चतुर्हस्तसमायुक्तं चतुरस्रं समंततः
A space measuring four hand-spans, square on all sides,
ॐ विष्णुपादप्रसूतासि वैष्णवी विष्णुदेवता
Oṃ, you are born from the feet of Viṣṇu, you are Vaiṣṇavī, the goddess of Viṣṇu.
तिस्रः कोट्योऽर्द्धकोटी च तीर्थानां वायुरब्रवीत्
Three crores and half a crore of sacred bathing places, so said Vāyu,
नंदिनीत्येव ते नाम देवेषु नलिनीति च
Your name among the gods is Nandinī, and among the lotuses, Nalini.
विद्याधरा सुप्रसन्ना तथा लोक प्रसादिनी
The Vidyādharas are well-pleased, and likewise, you bring delight to the world.
एतानि पुण्यनामानि स्नानकाले प्रकीर्तयेत्
These auspicious names should be recited at the time of bathing.
सप्तवाराभिजप्तेन करसंपुटयोजितम् ।। ( ३) मूार्ध्नि कुर्याज्जलं भूप त्रिचतुःपञ्चसप्तधा ।। 4.123.
Having recited seven times with joined palms, one should pour water on the head, O king, three, four, five, or seven times.
स्नानं कुर्यान्मृदा तद्वदा मंत्र्य च विधानतः
One should bathe with clay in the same way, reciting mantras according to the rule.
अश्वक्रांते रथक्रांते विष्णुक्रांते वसुंधरे
O Earth, trodden by horses, by chariots, by Viṣṇu,
