एतन्महीव्रतं प्रोक्तं सप्तकल्पानुवर्तकम्
This is declared to be the great vow of land, lasting for seven aeons.
गुडव्रतस्तृतीयायां सर्वोपस्करणैर्युतः
The vow of jaggery on the third day, furnished with all utensils—
उमाव्रतमिदं प्रोक्तं सततानन्ददायकम्
This is called the vow of Uma, which always bestows happiness.
शिवलोके वसेत्कल्पं प्राप्तिव्रतमिदं स्मृतम्
One who completes this vow is said to dwell in Shiva’s realm for a kalpa.
गौरीलोके वसेत्कल्पं ततो राजा भवेदिह
He dwells in Gauri’s realm for a kalpa, and then becomes a king here.
चैत्री त्रिरात्रं नक्ताशी नद्यां स्नात्वा ददाति यः
Whoever, during the three nights of Chaitra, eats only at night, bathes in a river, and gives—
न जायते पुनरसौ जीवलोके कदाचन 4.121.
He is never born again in the world of the living.
कन्यादानं तु यः कुर्यादुद्वाहं कारयेच्च यः
Whoever gives a maiden in marriage and arranges her wedding—
कन्यादानात्परं दानं न चास्त्यभ्यधिकं क्वचित्
There is no gift anywhere greater than the gift of a maiden.
तिलपिष्टमयं कृत्वा गजं हेमविभूषितम्
Having made an elephant out of sesame flour, adorned with gold—
नक्षत्रमालासहितं चामरापीडधारिणम्
Adorned with a garland of stars and bearing a yak-tail headdress.
ताम्रपात्र्यां कुण्डकं वा कृतं दत्त्वाग्रमोदकम्
Placing a vessel or bowl in a copper dish, offering a sweet at its tip.
कंठप्रमाणमाविश्य जलं मलविवर्जितः
Entering up to the measure of the throat, water free from impurity.
कांतारकारिदुर्गेषु वारयत्यपि दुष्कृतीन्
In fortresses built by beloved stars, he restrains even evil deeds.
ये कुर्वंति दिने पुण्ये व्रतं पौरंदरं नराः
Those men who perform the auspicious Pauraṇḍara vow on a holy day.
पयोव्रतस्तु पञ्चम्यां दत्त्वा नागं द्विजातये
On the fifth day, observing the milk vow, giving a serpent to a twice-born.
सिताष्टम्यां सोपवासो वृषभं यः प्रयच्छति 4.121.
On the white eighth, with fasting, whoever gives a bull.
शिवलोके वसेत्कल्पं ततो राजा भवेदिह
He dwells in Shiva's realm for an age, then becomes a king here.
उत्तरे त्वयने प्राप्ते घृतप्रस्थेन यो हरिम्
When the northern solstice arrives, whoever offers Hari with a measure of ghee.
स सर्वकामसंयुक्तः पुत्रभ्रातृसमन्वितः
He is endowed with all desires, accompanied by sons and brothers.
सकृन्नवम्यां भक्तेन पूजयेद्विन्ध्यवासिनीम्
Once, on the ninth, the devotee should worship the goddess dwelling in Vindhya.
हैमं विप्राय शांताय स वाग्मी जायते नरः
To a peaceful Brahmin, giving gold, that man becomes eloquent.
द्वादश्यां गुह्यकानां च पललैक्षवसंयुतम्
On the twelfth, to the Guhyakas, offering a mixture of barley and sugarcane.
विष्कम्भादिषु योगेषु एकमुक्तरतो नरः
In conjunctions like Viṣkambha, a man devoted to liberation.
यो ददाति क्रमादेषु घृततैलफलैक्षवम्
Whoever gives, in succession, ghee, oil, fruit, and sugarcane.
लवणं दधि दुग्धं च वस्त्रं कनकमेव च
Salt, curd, milk, cloth, and even gold.
कर्पूरं कुंकुमं चैव चंदनं कुसुमानि च 4.121.
Camphor, saffron, sandalwood, and flowers.
स्नातः स्वशक्त्या विधिवत्सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
Having bathed, according to one's ability and the prescribed method, one is freed from all sins.
कार्तिक्यां नक्तभुग्दद्यान्मेषं मार्गशिरे वृषम्
In the month of Kārtika, one should offer a ram while fasting at night; in Mārgaśīrsha, a bull.
क्रमेण राशयः सर्वा वस्त्रमाल्यैर्विभूषिताः
In succession, all the zodiac signs are adorned with garments and garlands.
