माघे निश्यार्द्रवासाः स्यात्सप्तम्यां गोप्रदो भवेत
In the month of Magha, spending the night in wet clothes, on the seventh lunar day, he becomes a giver of cows.
दत्त्वा कृतोपवासस्तु दिवि कल्पशतं वसेत्
Having given and observed a fast, he dwells in heaven for a hundred kalpas.
तद्वत्कल्पद्वयादूर्ध्वं करिभ्यां संयुतं नरः
Likewise, after two kalpas, a man is accompanied by elephants.
त्रिरात्रोपोषितो दद्यात्फाल्गुन्यां भवनं शुभम्
Having fasted for three nights, one should give a beautiful house in the month of Phalguna.
सुरलोकमवाप्नोति धाम व्रतसमन्वितम्
He attains the world of the gods, endowed with the merit of vows.
पौर्णमास्यामवाप्नोति मोक्षमिन्दुव्रतादिह
On the full moon, he attains liberation here through the Indu vow and others.
दत्त्वा सितद्वितीयायामिंदोर्लवणभोजनम् 4.121.
By giving salt food on the white second lunar day of the moon—
समांते गोप्रदो याति विप्राय शिवमंदिरम्
At the end of the year, the giver of cows goes to the auspicious abode of Shiva for a Brahmin.
प्रतिपद्येकभक्ताशी समांते कपिलाप्रदः
On the first lunar day, eating once, at the end of the year he gives a tawny cow.
एकादश्यां माघमासे चतुर्दश्यष्टमीषु च
On the eleventh day, in the month of Magha, and on the fourteenth and eighth lunar days as well—
उपानहौ कंबलांश्च चैत्रे छत्रादिकं ततः
He should give shoes and blankets, and in Chaitra, an umbrella and the like.
ब्राह्मणानां महाराज सोऽश्वमेधफलं लभेत्
O great king, to Brahmins he attains the fruit of an Ashvamedha sacrifice.
दशम्यामेकभक्ताशी समांते दशधेनुदः
On the tenth day, one who eats only once and at the end gives ten cows as a gift—
तिलद्रोणोपरिगतो ब्रह्मांडाधिपतिर्भवेत्
Having placed a measure of sesame, he becomes the lord of the cosmic egg.
संपूज्य सितसप्तम्यां भानुधान्यानि सप्त यः
Whoever, on the bright seventh day, worships and offers seven kinds of grains to the Sun—
स तारयति सप्ताष्टौ कुलान्यात्मानमेव च
He delivers seven or eight generations of his family, as well as himself.
मासोपवासी यो दद्याद्धेनुं विप्राय शोभनाम् 4.121.
Whoever, after fasting for a month, gives a fine cow to a Brahmin—
पक्षोपवासी यो दद्याद्विप्राय कपिलाद्वयम्
Whoever, after fasting for a fortnight, gives two tawny cows to a Brahmin—
दद्यात्त्रिंशत्पलादूर्ध्वं महीं कृत्वा तु कांचनीम्
He should give land weighing thirty palas or more, making it golden.
तिलद्रोणोपरि गतां ब्राह्मणाय कुटुंबिने
He should give to a householder Brahmin land placed upon a measure of sesame.
एतन्महीव्रतं प्रोक्तं सप्तकल्पानुवर्तकम्
This is declared to be the great vow of land, lasting for seven aeons.
गुडव्रतस्तृतीयायां सर्वोपस्करणैर्युतः
The vow of jaggery on the third day, furnished with all utensils—
उमाव्रतमिदं प्रोक्तं सततानन्ददायकम्
This is called the vow of Uma, which always bestows happiness.
शिवलोके वसेत्कल्पं प्राप्तिव्रतमिदं स्मृतम्
One who completes this vow is said to dwell in Shiva’s realm for a kalpa.
गौरीलोके वसेत्कल्पं ततो राजा भवेदिह
He dwells in Gauri’s realm for a kalpa, and then becomes a king here.
चैत्री त्रिरात्रं नक्ताशी नद्यां स्नात्वा ददाति यः
Whoever, during the three nights of Chaitra, eats only at night, bathes in a river, and gives—
न जायते पुनरसौ जीवलोके कदाचन 4.121.
He is never born again in the world of the living.
कन्यादानं तु यः कुर्यादुद्वाहं कारयेच्च यः
Whoever gives a maiden in marriage and arranges her wedding—
कन्यादानात्परं दानं न चास्त्यभ्यधिकं क्वचित्
There is no gift anywhere greater than the gift of a maiden.
तिलपिष्टमयं कृत्वा गजं हेमविभूषितम्
Having made an elephant out of sesame flour, adorned with gold—
