कार्त्तिक्यां यो वृषोत्सर्गं कृत्वा नक्तं समाचरेत्
Whoever, in the month of Kārtika, performs the release of a bull and observes a night fast—
व्रतांते गौः प्रदातव्या भोजनं शक्तितः परम्
—at the end of the vow, should give a cow and, to the best of his ability, provide food.
चतुर्दश्यां तु नक्ताशी समांते गोयुगप्रदः
On the fourteenth day, one who eats only at night should, at the conclusion, give a pair of cows.
सप्तरात्रोषितो दद्याद्घृतकुंभं द्विजातये
One who has fasted for seven nights should give a pot of ghee to a twice-born.
मासांते च स गां दद्याद्धेनुमंते पयस्विनीम्
And at the end of the month, he should give a milking cow at the conclusion.
सोपवासः पञ्चगव्यं पिबेद्रात्रौ विचक्षणः
Having fasted, the wise one should drink pañcagavya at night.
कपिलायास्तु गोमूत्रं कृष्णाया गोमयं तथा 4.121.
He should take the urine of a tawny cow, and likewise the dung of a black cow.
गृहीत्वा कर्बुरायास्तु घृतमेकत्र मेलयेत्
Taking ghee from a spotted cow, he should mix it all together in one place.
ततः प्रभातसमये स्नात्वा संतर्प्य देवताः
Then, at dawn, after bathing and satisfying the deities—
ब्रह्मकूर्चव्रतं ह्येतत्सर्वपापप्रणाशनम् ब्रह्मकूर्चोपवासेन तत्सर्वं नश्यति क्षणात्
This is the Brahmakūrcha vow, which destroys all sins; by fasting with the Brahmakūrcha, all that is destroyed in an instant.
अनग्निपक्वमश्नाति तृतीयायां तु यो नरः
Whoever eats food not cooked by fire on the third day—
एतद्दृषिव्रतं नाम सर्वमाङ्गल्यकारकम्
This is called the seers' vow, which brings all auspiciousness.
तिलप्रस्थोपरि गतं सितमाल्ययुगान्वितम् तदंते राजराजः स्यादग्निव्रतमिदं स्मृतम्
Whatever is placed upon a prastha of sesame, adorned with a pair of white garlands—at the end, one becomes a king of kings; this is known as the Agni vow.
कृत्वा पलद्वयादूर्ध्वं शय्याभ्यां संयुतं नरः
Having done so, and placing it above two palas in weight, along with two beds—
सत्यलोके वसेत्कल्पं सहस्रमथ भूपतिः
The king dwells in Satyaloka for a thousand kalpas.
मुखवासं परित्यज्य समांते गोप्रदो भवेत्
Having given up residence at the mouth, at the end of the year he becomes a giver of cows.
निशि कृत्वा जले वासं प्रभाते गोप्रदो भवेत् 4.121.
By spending the night in water, in the morning he becomes a giver of cows.
चान्द्रायणं च यः कुर्याद्धैमं चन्द्रं निवेदयेत्
Whoever performs the Chandrayana vow and offers a golden moon attains the result.
ज्येष्ठे पञ्चतपाः सायं हेमधेनुप्रदो दिवम्
In the month of Jyeshtha, one who practices the fivefold austerity in the evening gives a golden cow and attains heaven.
अनुलेपनं यः कुर्यात्तृतीयायां शिवालये
Whoever applies unguent in a Shiva temple on the third lunar day—
माघे निश्यार्द्रवासाः स्यात्सप्तम्यां गोप्रदो भवेत
In the month of Magha, spending the night in wet clothes, on the seventh lunar day, he becomes a giver of cows.
दत्त्वा कृतोपवासस्तु दिवि कल्पशतं वसेत्
Having given and observed a fast, he dwells in heaven for a hundred kalpas.
तद्वत्कल्पद्वयादूर्ध्वं करिभ्यां संयुतं नरः
Likewise, after two kalpas, a man is accompanied by elephants.
त्रिरात्रोपोषितो दद्यात्फाल्गुन्यां भवनं शुभम्
Having fasted for three nights, one should give a beautiful house in the month of Phalguna.
सुरलोकमवाप्नोति धाम व्रतसमन्वितम्
He attains the world of the gods, endowed with the merit of vows.
पौर्णमास्यामवाप्नोति मोक्षमिन्दुव्रतादिह
On the full moon, he attains liberation here through the Indu vow and others.
दत्त्वा सितद्वितीयायामिंदोर्लवणभोजनम् 4.121.
By giving salt food on the white second lunar day of the moon—
समांते गोप्रदो याति विप्राय शिवमंदिरम्
At the end of the year, the giver of cows goes to the auspicious abode of Shiva for a Brahmin.
प्रतिपद्येकभक्ताशी समांते कपिलाप्रदः
On the first lunar day, eating once, at the end of the year he gives a tawny cow.
एकादश्यां माघमासे चतुर्दश्यष्टमीषु च
On the eleventh day, in the month of Magha, and on the fourteenth and eighth lunar days as well—
