कुमुदा माधवी गौरी भवानी पार्वती उमा
Kumuda, Madhavi, Gauri, Bhavani, Parvati, Uma—
ब्राह्मणं पृजयित्वैकं वाच्यः संपमन्नमस्तु ते
After honoring a Brahmin, one should say: 'May you have abundant food.'
करोति सुन्दरं देहं सौभाग्यं यच्छते परम्
He creates a beautiful body and bestows supreme good fortune.
शुक्तिं गंधभृतां दत्त्वा विप्राय सितवाससी
By giving a shell filled with fragrance and white garments to a Brahmin,
वारुणं च पदं याति तदेतद्वरुणव्रतम्
He attains the realm of Varuna; this is the vow of Varuna.
मासांतेऽथ ततो दद्यात्सवत्सां गां द्विजातये ।। स्थित्वा विष्णुपदे कल्पं ततो राजा भवेदिह
At the end of the month, one should give a cow with a calf to a twice-born; having remained in Vishnu's abode for an age, he then becomes a king here.
एतत्कांतिव्रतं नाम कांतिकीर्तिप्रदायकम्
This is called the Kānti vow, which bestows radiance and fame.
त्र्यहं तिलव्रती भूत्वा वह्निं संतर्पयेद्द्विजम् 4.121.
Having observed the sesame vow for three days, one should satisfy the fire and a Brahmin.
शक्तितस्त्रिपलादूर्ध्वं विश्वात्मा प्रीयतामिति
Let the universal Self be pleased, as far as possible, with three or more pala measures.
एतद्ब्रह्मव्रतं नाम निर्वाणफलदं नृणाम्
This is called the Brahma vow, which grants liberation as its fruit to people.
यश्चोभयमुखीं दद्यात्प्रभूतकनकान्विताम्
And whoever gives a vessel with openings on both sides, filled with abundant gold,
त्र्यहं पयोव्रतः स्थित्वा काञ्चनं कल्पपादपम्
Having observed a milk vow for three days, and then giving a golden wish-fulfilling tree,
छादितं वरवासोभिः पुष्पमालाविभूषितम् । दत्त्वा स्वर्गे वसेत्कल्पं कल्पव्रतमिदं स्मृतम्
Covered with fine garments, adorned with garlands of flowers—after giving this, one dwells in heaven for a kalpa; this is known as the Kalpa vow.
यस्तु वत्सतरीं भव्यां कण्ठाभरणभूषिताम्
But whoever gives a fine young cow, adorned with a necklace,
मोदकोदकपात्रेण तांबूलेन समन्विताम्
Along with a vessel of sweets and water, and betel leaves,
ईदृग्विधां व्यतीपाते ग्रहणे चायनद्वये
Such an offering, made at the time of an eclipse or at the two solstices,
एतद्वारव्रतं नाम मार्गखेदविनाशनम्
This is called the Dvāra vow, which removes the fatigue of the path.
नक्ताशी त्वष्टमीषु स्याद्वत्सरांतेऽष्टगोप्रदः 4.121.
One should fast at night on the eighth lunar day, and at the year's end, give eight cows.
यश्चेन्धनप्रदो राजन्हेमंतशिशिर व्रतम्
And whoever gives fuel, O King, during the Hemanta and Śiśira seasons as a vow,
शरीरारोग्यजननं द्युतिकांतिप्रदायकम्
It brings about bodily health and bestows radiance and brilliance.
एकादश्यां तु नक्ताशी यश्चक्रं विनिवेदयेत्
On the eleventh lunar day, one who fasts at night and offers a wheel,
य एतत्कुरुते भक्त्या स विष्णोः पदमाप्नुयात्
Whoever performs this with devotion attains the abode of Viṣṇu.
पयोव्रतस्तु पञ्चम्यां व्रतांते गोयुगप्रदः
At the end of the vow, on the fifth lunar day, one who has observed the milk vow should give a pair of cows.
सप्तम्यां नक्तभुग्दद्यात्समाप्ते गां पयस्विनीम्
On the seventh lunar day, after fasting at night, one should give a milking cow at the conclusion.
चतुर्थ्यां नक्तभुग्दद्यादष्ट गा होमचारणम्
On the fourth lunar day, after fasting at night, one should give eight cows and perform a homa ritual.
महाफलानि यस्त्यक्त्वा चातुर्मासं द्विजातये
Whoever, having renounced great fruits, observes the four-month vow for a twice-born person—
यश्चोपवासी सप्तम्यां समांते हेमपङ्कजम् 4.121.
Whoever, having fasted on the seventh day, at the conclusion offers a golden lotus—
भक्त्या राजेन्द्र विप्राय वाचकाय निवेदयेत्
—should, with devotion, present it to a learned Brahmin who recites the scriptures, O king.
द्वादश द्वादशीर्यस्तु नाम प्राशनसंयुतः
He who observes the vow for twelve days, accompanied by the prescribed food offerings—
द्वादशात्र प्रदेयाश्च सर्वकामप्रसिद्धये
—should give gifts on the twelfth day to fulfill all desires.
