चैत्रादिचतुरो मासाञ्जलं कुर्यादयाचितम्
From the month of Chaitra, for four months, one should make offerings as requested.
व्रतांते मणिकं दद्यादन्नवस्त्रसमन्वितम्
At the conclusion of the vow, one should give a jewel along with food and clothing.
तिलपात्रं हिरण्यं च ब्रह्मलोके महीयते
A vessel of sesame and gold is honored in the world of Brahma.
पञ्चामृतेन स्नपनं कृत्वा विष्णोः शिवस्य च
After bathing Vishnu and Shiva with the five nectars—
विप्राय कनकं शंखं स पदं याति शांकरम्
One should give a golden conch to a Brahmin and attains the abode of Shiva.
यो हिंसां वर्जयित्वा तु मासं संवत्सरं तथा
Whoever, avoiding violence for a month or a year—
तद्वत्सवत्सां गां दद्यात्सोऽश्वमेधफलं लभेत्
In the same way, gives a cow with a calf, obtains the fruit of an Ashvamedha sacrifice.
माघमास्युषसि स्नानं कृत्वा दांपत्यमर्चयेत् 4.121.
Having bathed at dawn in the month of Magha, one should worship the couple.
सौभाग्यं महदाप्नोति शरीरारोग्यमुत्तमम्
He attains great good fortune and excellent health of body.
आषाढादिचतुर्मासं प्रातःस्नायी भवेन्नरः
From the month of Ashadha, for four months, a man should bathe in the morning.
घृतकुंभं ततो दत्त्वा सर्वान्कामानवाप्नुयात्
By giving a pot of ghee, one attains all desires.
अयनादयनं यावद्वर्जयेन्मधुसर्पिषी
From the solstice onward, one should avoid honey and clarified butter.
दत्त्वा शिवपदं याति दत्त्वा तु घृतपायसम्
By giving, one attains the abode of Shiva; by giving ghee-rice pudding,
संध्यादीपप्रदो यस्तु मांसं तैलं विवर्जयेत्
He who offers lamps at twilight and avoids meat and oil,
वस्त्रयुग्मं च विप्राय स तेजस्वी भवेद्दृढम्
And gives a pair of garments to a Brahmin, becomes truly radiant.
एकभक्तेन सप्ताहं गौरीं वा यस्तु पूजयेत्
Whoever worships Gauri for seven days with one meal a day,
ततः सुवासिनीभ्यां तु कुंकुमेन विलेपयेत्
After that, should anoint two married women with saffron.
तांबूलं शोभनं दत्त्वा नारिकेलफलं तथा 4.121.
By giving fine betel and also a coconut fruit,
एकैकां पूजयेद्देवीं सप्ताहं यावदेव तु
One should worship each goddess for exactly seven days.
षड्रसं भोजयित्वा तु यथाशक्त्या विभूषणैः
After feeding them food of six tastes, and adorning them as able,
कुमुदा माधवी गौरी भवानी पार्वती उमा
Kumuda, Madhavi, Gauri, Bhavani, Parvati, Uma—
ब्राह्मणं पृजयित्वैकं वाच्यः संपमन्नमस्तु ते
After honoring a Brahmin, one should say: 'May you have abundant food.'
करोति सुन्दरं देहं सौभाग्यं यच्छते परम्
He creates a beautiful body and bestows supreme good fortune.
शुक्तिं गंधभृतां दत्त्वा विप्राय सितवाससी
By giving a shell filled with fragrance and white garments to a Brahmin,
वारुणं च पदं याति तदेतद्वरुणव्रतम्
He attains the realm of Varuna; this is the vow of Varuna.
मासांतेऽथ ततो दद्यात्सवत्सां गां द्विजातये ।। स्थित्वा विष्णुपदे कल्पं ततो राजा भवेदिह
At the end of the month, one should give a cow with a calf to a twice-born; having remained in Vishnu's abode for an age, he then becomes a king here.
एतत्कांतिव्रतं नाम कांतिकीर्तिप्रदायकम्
This is called the Kānti vow, which bestows radiance and fame.
त्र्यहं तिलव्रती भूत्वा वह्निं संतर्पयेद्द्विजम् 4.121.
Having observed the sesame vow for three days, one should satisfy the fire and a Brahmin.
शक्तितस्त्रिपलादूर्ध्वं विश्वात्मा प्रीयतामिति
Let the universal Self be pleased, as far as possible, with three or more pala measures.
एतद्ब्रह्मव्रतं नाम निर्वाणफलदं नृणाम्
This is called the Brahma vow, which grants liberation as its fruit to people.
