लोकप्रीतिकरं चैतत्प्रीतिव्रतमिहोच्यते
This vow, which brings joy to people, is here called the Prītivrata.
दद्याद्वस्त्रयुगं सूक्ष्मं रसपात्रैश्च संयुतम्
One should give a pair of fine garments, along with vessels for liquids.
एतद्गौरीव्रतं नाम भवानीलोक दायकम्
This is called the Gaurīvrata, which grants the world of Bhavānī.
संवत्सरांते तस्मिन्वा दिवसे विघ्नवर्जितम्
At the end of the year, or on that very day, free from obstacles,
विप्राय वसुसंयुक्तं प्रद्युम्नः प्रीयतामिति
One should give to a Brahmin, along with wealth, saying, 'May Pradyumna be pleased.'
एतत्कामव्रतंनाम सर्वशोकविनाशनम्
This is called the Kāmavrata, which destroys all sorrow.
वृंताकभक्षणं चैव मधुसर्पिर्घटान्वितम्
And the eating of eggplant, along with a pot of honey and ghee,
रुद्रलोकमवाप्नोति शिवव्रतमिदं स्मृतम् 4.121.
One attains the realm of Rudra; this is known as the Śivavrata.
संपूज्य पूर्णिमां देवीं लिखित्वा चन्दनादिना मधुना सितखण्डेन ब्राह्मणायोपपादयेत्
Having worshipped the goddess on the full moon, writing with sandal and the like, one should offer to a Brahmin with honey and sugar.
मनोरथान्पूरयस्व संपूर्णान्पूर्णिमा ह्यसि द्विजानेवं नमस्कृत्य सर्वान्कामानवाप्नुयात्
Fulfill the wishes, for you are the full moon; by bowing to the twice-born in this way, one attains all desires.
एतत्पंचघटं नाम व्रतं पुष्टिप्रदायकम्
This is called the Paṃcaghaṭa vow, which bestows nourishment.
पुष्पत्रयं च फाल्गुन्यां कृत्वा शक्त्याथ काञ्चनम्
On the Phālguni day, one should make an offering of three kinds of flowers, and, according to ability, gold.
शिरःसौगन्धजननं सदानन्दकरं नृणाम्
It produces fragrance for the head and always brings joy to people.
फाल्गुनादितृतीयायां लवणं यस्तु वर्जयेत्
Whoever avoids salt on the third day beginning from Phālguni—
संपूज्य विप्रमिथुनं भवानी प्रीयतामिति
Having worshipped the pair of Brahmins, one should say, 'May Bhavani be pleased.'
संध्यामौनं नरः कृत्वा समाप्ते घृतकुंभदः
A man, having observed silence during twilight, at the conclusion should offer a pot of ghee.
सारस्वतं पदं याति पुनरावृत्ति दुर्लभम्
He attains the Sarasvata state, and rebirth becomes difficult to obtain.
लक्ष्मीमध्येऽथ पञ्चम्यामुपवासी भवेन्नरः ।। 4.121.
On the fifth day, in the midst of Lakshmi, a man should observe a fast.
स वैष्णवं पदं याति लक्ष्मीः स्याज्जन्मजन्मनि
He attains the Vaishnava state, and Lakshmi remains with him birth after birth.
या तु नारी पिबेत्तोयं जलधारां प्रपातयेत्
Any woman who drinks this water and pours forth a stream of water—
एतद्धाराव्रतं नाम सर्वरोगहरं परम्
This is called the Dharavrata, supreme and remover of all diseases.
गौरीसमन्वितं रुद्रं लक्ष्म्या सह जनार्दनम्
With Gauri, Rudra, Janardana, and Lakshmi together—
धूपाक्षेपेणसहितां सुघंटां पात्रसंयुताम्
With incense, a good bell, and a vessel, all accompanied—
दक्षिणासहितां कृत्वा प्रणम्य च विसर्जयेत्
Having offered with gifts, bowing, one should then dismiss them.
कृत्वोपलेपनं शंभोरग्रतः केशवस्य च
Having applied unguent before Shambhu and also before Keshava—
जन्मायुतं स राजा स्यात्ततः शिवपुरं वसेत्
He becomes a king for ten thousand births, then dwells in the city of Shiva.
अश्वत्थं भास्करं गंगां प्रणम्यैव च वाग्यतः
Having bowed, with restrained speech, to the Ashvattha, the Sun, and the Ganga—
वृक्षं हिरण्मयं दद्यात्सोश्वमेधफलं लभेत् ।। 4.121.
He should give a golden tree and obtains the fruit of an Ashvamedha sacrifice.
दिवि दिव्यविमानस्थः सेव्यतेऽप्सरसां गणैः
In heaven, stationed in a divine chariot, he is served by hosts of Apsaras.
घृतेन स्नपनं कृत्वा शंभोर्वा केशवस्य च
Having performed an ablution with ghee for Shambhu or for Keshava—
