पालाशाश्वत्थभंगेन पञ्चगव्यजलेन च
With the breaking of palāśa and aśvattha branches, and with the five products of the cow—
प्रणम्य च गवा सार्द्धं ब्राह्मणाय निवेदयेत् ।। 4.120.
Having bowed, together with a cow, one should offer it to a brāhmaṇa.
नमस्तेऽङ्गिरसां नाथ वाक्पतेथ बृहस्पते
Salutations to you, lord of the descendants of Aṅgiras, master of speech, O Bṛhaspati.
एवं सुरगुरुं पूज्य प्रणिपत्य क्षमापयेत्
Having thus worshipped the guru of the gods, one should bow and ask forgiveness.
अथ वा मौक्तिकान्येव सुवृत्तानि बृहंति च
Alternatively, well-formed pearls may also be given.
भक्त्या मौक्तिकदानेन दत्तेन कुरुनन्दन कुर्वन्बृहस्पतेः पूजां न कदाचित्प्रजायते
By giving pearls with devotion, O descendant of the Kurus, one who performs the worship of Bṛhaspati is never born again.
ये भार्गवोदयमवाप्य सवस्त्रपुष्पां कुर्वंत्यनन्य मनसोऽङ्गिरसे च पूजाम्
Those who, upon the rising of Venus, perform worship for Aṅgiras with unwavering mind, using garments and flowers—
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे शुक्रबृहस्पत्यर्घपूजाविधानं नाम विंशत्युत्तरशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred twentieth chapter, entitled 'The Procedure for the Arghya Worship of Venus and Bṛhaspati,' in the dialogue between Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Yudhiṣṭhira, in the Uttara Parvan of the glorious Bhaviṣya Mahāpurāṇa.
व्रतपञ्चाशीतिवर्णनम् नोक्तानि यानि कस्यापि मुनिभिर्धर्मदर्शिभिः
Those things which have not been spoken by any sage, even by those who see the true nature of dharma,
भविष्यमत्स्यमार्तंडपुराणेषु च वर्णितम्
are described in the Bhavishya, Matsya, and Martanda Puranas.
यदभीष्टं सुमित्राय शिष्याय च सुताय च
Whatever is desired by Sumitra, by a disciple, or by a son,
श्रुतिस्मृतिपुराणेभ्यो यन्मया ह्यवधारितम्
that which I have ascertained from the Vedas, Smritis, and Puranas,
स्नात्वा प्रभातसंध्यायामुपगृह्य च पिप्पलम्
having bathed at the morning twilight and worshipped the sacred fig tree,
व्रतानामुत्तमं ह्येतत्सर्वपापप्रणाशनम्
this is indeed the supreme vow among vows, the destroyer of all sins.
सुशुद्धस्य सुवर्णस्य सुवर्णं यः प्रयच्छति
Whoever gives pure gold to one who is pure,
व्रतं वाचस्पतेरेतद्बलबुद्धिप्रदायकम्
this vow of Brihaspati bestows strength and intelligence.
लवणं कटुतिक्तं च जीरकं मरिचानि च
Salt, pungent and bitter things, cumin, and black pepper,
चतुर्थ्या मेकभक्ताशी सकृद्दत्त्वा कुटुंबिने 4.121.
on the fourth day, eating only one meal, having given these once to a householder,
एतच्छिलाव्रतं नाम लक्ष्मीलोकप्रदायकम्
this is called the Shilavrata, which bestows the world of Lakshmi.
नक्तमन्नं चरित्वा तु गवा सार्द्धं कुटुंबिने
Having observed a fast with night food, together with cows and the householder,
प्रणम्य भक्त्या देवेशौ प्रीयेतां शिवकेशवौ
having bowed with devotion to the Lords of the gods, Shiva and Keshava are pleased.
कृत्वैकभुक्तं वर्षांते शक्त्या हैमवृषान्विताम्
Having eaten only once at the end of the year, according to one's ability, with a golden bull,
एतद्रुद्रव्रतं नाम पापशोकप्रणाशनम्
this is called the Rudra-vrata, which destroys sin and sorrow.
सर्वौषध्युदकस्नातः पञ्चम्यां पूज्य पंचकम्
Having bathed with water infused with all herbs, on the fifth day, one should worship the group of five.
गृहाद्युलूखलं शूर्पः शिला स्थाली च पञ्चमी
A mortar from the house, a winnowing basket, a grinding stone, and a cooking pot on the fifth day,
एतानि गृहिणां गेहे प्रस्थाप्य पुरुषोत्तमम्
these should be established in the house of the householder for the sake of the Supreme Person.
एतद्गृहव्रतं नाम सर्व सौख्यप्रदायकम्
This is called the Gṛhavrata, which bestows all happiness.
यस्तु नीलोत्पलं हैमं शर्करापात्रसंयुतम् 4.121.
Whoever offers a blue lotus with a golden vessel filled with sugar,
स वैष्णवं पदं याति लीलाव्रतमिदं स्मृतम्
He attains the Vaishnava realm; this is known as the Līlāvrata.
पारिते च पुनर्दद्यात्तिलतैलघटं नवम्
On the completion, one should again give a new pot of sesame oil.
