न च व्याधिर्भवेत्तस्य रोगी रोगात्प्रमुच्यते
No disease afflicts that person; the sick are freed from illness.
रणे राजकुले द्यूते सर्वत्र विजयी भवेत् ।।4.117.
In battle, in the royal court, at dice, everywhere, he becomes victorious.
यश्च पूजयते नित्यं शास्त्रोक्तविधिना नरः
And the man who worships continually according to the procedure prescribed in the scriptures,
येनोपवासविधिना व्रतेन च यशस्विनी
And by whom, with the discipline of fasting and the observance of the vow, O illustrious one,
यदि रात्रौ भवेद्विष्टिरेकभुक्तं दिनद्वयम्
If the Viṣṭi occurs at night, then for two days one should eat only once.
प्रहरस्योपरि यदा स्याद्विष्टिः प्रहरत्रयम्
When the Viṣṭi falls during a prahara, then for three praharas one should observe the rule.
सर्वौषध्युदकस्नानं सुगंधामलकैरथ
One should bathe with water infused with all herbs, using fragrant and pure emblic myrobalan fruits.
देवान्पितॄन्प्रीणयित्वा ततो दर्भमयीं शुभाम्
Having satisfied the gods and ancestors, then one should prepare the auspicious darbha grass seat.
होमं कृत्वा विष्टिनामैरष्टोत्तरशतं ततः सतिलां कृशरां भुक्त्वा पश्चाद्भुञ्जीत कामतः
After performing a homa with one hundred and eight Viṣṭi grains, one should eat gruel with sesame, and then eat as desired.
छायासूर्यसुते देवि विष्टिरिष्टार्थदायिनि
O goddess, Viṣṭi, daughter of the Sun and of Shadow, grants the desired fruits.
उपोष्प विधिनानेन दश सप्त यथाक्रमम् 4.117.
By this method of fasting, one should observe for ten or seven days in order.
स्थापयित्वायसे पीठे कृशरान्नं निवेद्य च
Having placed gruel on an iron seat and offered it,
ब्राह्मणाय पुनर्दद्याल्लोहं तैलं तिलांस्तथा दक्षिणां च यथाशक्त्या दत्त्वा भद्रां विसर्जयेत्
One should then give iron, oil, and sesame to a Brahmin, and also a gift according to one's ability, and then dismiss the auspicious one.
य एवं कुरुते पार्थ सम्यग्भद्राव्रतं नरः
O Pārtha, the man who thus properly performs the Bhadrā vow,
राक्षसाश्च पिशाचा वा पूतनाशाकिनीग्रहाः
Demons, spirits, Putanās, witches, and evil influences,
न चैवेष्टवियोगः स्यान्न हानिस्तस्य जायते
There will be no separation from desired things, nor will any loss arise for him.
सूर्यात्मजातिदयिता भगिनी शनेर्या मर्त्ये भ्रमत्यतिरथा करणक्रमेण
The beloved sister of Śani, born of the Sun, who wanders among mortals, is to be honored in the prescribed manner.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे विष्टिव्रतवर्णनं नाम सप्तदशोत्तरशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Bhaviṣya Mahāpurāṇa, in the Uttara Parva, in the dialogue between Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Yudhiṣṭhira, is the one hundred and seventeenth chapter named 'Description of the Viṣṭi Vow.'
अगस्त्यव्रतवर्णनम् तच्छृणुष्व महीपाल कथ्यमानं मयानघ
Now hear, O king, the description of the Agastya vow as I relate it, O sinless one.
जन्म चैवार्घदानं च कालमुद्गमनस्य च
The birth, the offering of water, and the time of the emergence of the mung bean—these will be described.
मंदरस्य समीपे तु चेरतुर्विपुलं तपः
Near Mount Mandara, they performed intense austerities.
तयोः संक्षोभणार्थाय वासवेन वराप्सराः
To disturb them, Indra sent the most beautiful celestial nymphs.
तस्याः संदर्शनादेव क्षुभितौ तौ सुरोत्तमौ
Merely by seeing her, those two exalted gods were agitated.
निमेः शापात्तत्र जातो वशिष्ठो भगवानृषिः
By the curse of Nimi, the divine sage Vasiṣṭha was born there.
मलयस्यैकदेशे तु वैखानसविधानतः
In one part of the Malaya mountains, according to the Vaikhānasa tradition,
आस्तां दैत्यौ पुरा दुष्टावादौ कृतयुगस्य तु
Long ago, in the Kṛta Yuga, two wicked Daityas dwelled there.
तयोरेकोऽभवन्मेषो द्वितीयो भोज्यदायकः
Of those two, one became a ram, the other a provider of food.
अथान्यस्मिन्दिने दैत्यो ह्यगस्त्यं संन्यमन्त्रयत् 4.118.
Then, on another day, the Daitya invited Agastya with mantras.
अगस्त्योप्यभवच्छ्राद्धे धौरेयो रोषदर्पितः
Agastya, filled with anger and pride, became the chief at the śrāddha.
परिविष्यमाणेषु तेषु स्तिमितं प्राह दानवम्
As they were serving the food, he sternly addressed the Dānava.
