पृथ्वी च यावत्सकुलाचला च यावच्च सूर्यानिलवह्निचन्द्राः
As long as the earth, with all its mountains, and as long as the sun, wind, fire, and moon exist,
ततस्तु कर्मक्षयमाप्य सप्तद्वीपाधिपः स्यात्सुकुलप्रसूतः
Then, having exhausted his karma, he will become the lord of the seven islands, born in a noble family.
इति पठति शृणोति योऽतिभक्त्या विधिमखिलं रविसंक्रमेषु पुण्यम्
Whoever recites or hears this entire rite with great devotion at the transitions of the sun attains merit.
विष्टिव्रतवर्णनम् कस्यात्मजेयं किंरूपा पूज्यते च कथं जनैः । शनैश्चरस्य सोदर्या भगिन्यतिभयंकरी
Whose daughter is she, what is her form, and how is she worshipped by people? She is the sister of Shani, greatly fearsome.
सा जातमात्रा भुवनं ग्रस्तुं समुपचक्रमे
As soon as she was born, she began to devour the world.
निर्याति यदि कार्येण कश्चित्तस्य पुरः स्थिता
If anyone stands before her for any purpose, she departs.
यज्ञविघ्नकरी रौद्रा समाजोत्सवनाशिनी
She is fierce, an obstacle to sacrifices, and destroys gatherings and festivals.
तां तु दुर्विनयासक्तां दृष्ट्वा देवो दिवाकरः
Seeing her attached to improper conduct, the god Sun became concerned.
कन्यादुर्विनयाच्चेह पिता दोषेण गृह्यते
Because of the daughter's misconduct here, the father is blamed.
विचिंत्यैवं सुतां भद्रां यस्ययस्य प्रयच्छति
Thus reflecting, to whomever he gives his virtuous daughter,
मण्डपं मण्डपारम्भे भंक्त्वा भीषयते जनम्
She breaks the pavilion at the start of the ceremony and frightens the people.
विरूपा दुष्टहृदया स्वेच्छाचारविहारिणी 4.117.१
She is deformed, wicked-hearted, and behaves as she pleases.
वितर्कयन्यावदेवमास्ते देवो दिवस्पतिः
The lord of day sits, pondering thus.
अथाजगाम सवितुः पार्श्वे ब्रह्माऽण्डसंभवः
Then, Brahma, born from the cosmic egg, approached the side of Savitar.
भास्करस्तमुवाचाथ ब्रह्माणं भुवनेश्वरम्
Then Bhāskara spoke to Brahmā, the Lord of the Worlds.
एवमुक्तस्तदा ब्रह्मा भास्करेणामितद्युतिः
Thus addressed at that time by Bhāskara, radiant with immeasurable brilliance, Brahmā replied.
करणैः सह वर्तस्व बवबालवकौलवैः
Remain engaged with your instruments, along with the young boys and the Kaulavas.
यात्राप्रवेशमांगल्यकृषिवाणिज्यकारणात्
For the sake of auspicious beginnings, journeys, agriculture, and trade,
उद्वेजनीयो नो हि जनो भवत्या दिवसत्रयम्
For three days, people should not be disturbed.
उल्लंघ्य ये प्रवर्तंते भद्रे त्वां निर्भया नराः
O Bhadrā, those men who proceed fearlessly, disregarding you,
एवमुक्त्वा गतो ब्रह्मा भद्रापि भुवनत्रयम्
Having thus spoken, Brahmā departed, and Bhadrā too traversed the three worlds.
एवमेषा समुत्पन्ना विष्टिरिष्टविनाशिनी 4.117.
In this way, this Viṣṭi arose, the destroyer of desired undertakings.
असितजलदवर्णा दीर्घनासोग्रदंष्ट्रा विपुलहनुकपाला पिंडिकोद्बद्धजंघा
She is dark as a rain cloud, with a long nose, fierce fangs, broad jaws and skull, and legs bound with thick muscles.
भानोः सुता केतुशताग्रजाता कृष्णा कुमूर्तिः सततं कुचेला
The daughter of Bhānu, born at the tip of a hundred banners, she is black, of dreadful form, always clad in rags.
मुखे तु घटिकाः पञ्च द्वे कंठे तु सदा स्थिते
In her mouth are five ghaṭikās, and two are always present at her throat.
कट्यां पञ्चैव विज्ञेयास्तिस्रः पुच्छे जयावहाः
At her waist, five should be known, and three at her tail, bringing victory.
हदि प्राणहरा ज्ञेया नाभ्यां तु कलहावहा
At her heart, she is known as the taker of life; at her navel, she brings about quarrels.
पृथिव्यां यानि कार्याणि सुशुभान्यशुभानि च
Whatever deeds are performed on earth, whether very auspicious or inauspicious,
धन्या दधिमुखी भद्रा महामारी खरानना
Dhanyā, Dadhimukhī, Bhadrā, Mahāmārī, and Kharānanā—
भैरवी च महाकाली असुराणां क्षयंकरी
Bhairavī and Mahākālī, destroyers of the Asuras,
