कोणस्थः पिङ्गलो बभ्रुः कृष्णो रौद्रोऽन्तको यमः
He who is stationed at an angle, tawny, reddish-brown, dark, fierce, the ender, Yama—
शनैश्चरमिति स्तुत्वा पिप्पलादो महामुनिः
Having thus praised Śanaiścara, the great sage Pippalāda—
इदं शनैश्चराख्यानं ये श्रोष्यन्ति समाहिताः
Those who listen attentively to this account of Śanaiścara—
कृष्णायसेन घटितां ग्रहराजमूर्तिं लोहे निधाय कलशे तिलतैलपूर्णे 4.114.
Placing an image of the king of planets, made of black iron, in a vessel filled with sesame oil—
आदित्यदिननक्तविधिवर्णनम् व्रतं तद्ब्रूहि गोविन्द सर्वपापप्रणाशनम्
Describe that vow, O Govinda, which destroys all sins, and the rules for the day and night of the Sun.
सूर्याग्निचन्द्ररूपेण तत्त्रिधा जगति स्थितम्
In the world, he abides in three forms: as the Sun, Fire, and Moon.
तमाराध्य पुमान्किं न प्राप्नोति कुरुनन्दन
Having worshipped him, O descendant of Kuru, what does a person not attain?
उत्पद्यते यदा भक्तिर्भानोरुपरि शाश्वती
When unwavering devotion arises toward the Sun, then—
पूर्वोक्तविधिना चैव पूजयित्वा द्विजोत्तमान्
Having worshipped the best of twice-born according to the previously stated method—
विलिख्य द्वादशदलं पूज्य सूर्येति पूर्वतः
One should inscribe a twelve-petaled (lotus), and worship the Sun in the east.
भगं तु नैर्ऋते देवं वरुणं पश्चिमे दले
One should place Bhaga, the deity of the southwest, and Varuṇa on the western petal.
शांतमीशानभागे तु नमस्कारेण विन्यसेत्
In the northeast section, one should place Śāṃta with reverence.
दक्षिणे यमनामानं मार्तंडं पश्चिमे दले
On the southern petal, Yama by name; on the western petal, Mārtaṇḍa.
अर्घ्यं दद्यात्ततः पार्थ सतिलारुणचंदनम् 4.115.१० कालात्मा सर्वभूतात्मा वेदात्मा विश्वतोमुखः
Then, O Pārtha, one should offer arghya with sesame and red sandalwood; he is the soul of time, the soul of all beings, the soul of the Vedas, facing in all directions.
अग्निमीले नमस्तुभ्यमिषे त्वोर्जे च भास्करे
I praise Agni: salutations to you; to you, Bhāskara, for food and energy.
अर्घ्यं दत्त्वा विसर्ज्याथ निशि तैलविवर्जितम्
After offering arghya, one should dismiss (the deity), and at night, avoid oil.
प्राक्तनेऽह्नि शनौ चैव तैलाभ्यंगं विवर्जयेत्
On the previous day and on Saturday, one should avoid anointing with oil.
पुरुषं च यथाशक्त्या कारयेद्द्विभुजं तथा
One should have a two-armed figure made, according to one's ability.
गां कल्पयित्वा पुरुषं सपद्मं दद्यादनेकव्रतनायकाय
Having prepared a cow and a man along with a lotus, one should give them to the leader of many vows.
नमोऽस्तु ऋक्सामयजुर्विधात्रे पद्मप्रबोधाय जगत्सवित्रे
Salutations to the creator of the Rig, Sama, and Yajur Vedas, to the awakener of the lotus, to the sun of the universe.
इत्यनेन विधानेन वर्षमेकं तु यो नरः
Thus, by this procedure, whoever for one year—
धनधान्यसमायुक्तः पुत्रपौत्रसमन्वितः 4.115.
—becomes endowed with wealth and grain, accompanied by sons and grandsons.
कर्मसंक्षयमवाप्य पार्थिवः शोकदुःखभयरोगवर्जितः
Having attained the exhaustion of karma, the king becomes free from sorrow, suffering, fear, and disease.
या च भर्तृगुरुदेवतत्परा वेदमूर्तिदिननक्तमाचरत्
And she who is devoted to husband, teacher, and deity, who practices day and night according to the Vedic form—
यः पठेदथ शृणोति वा नरः पश्यतीत्थमथ वानुमोदयेत् ।। सोऽपि शक्रभवने दिवौकसैः कल्पकोटिशतमेकमीड्यते
Whoever recites, hears, sees, or approves this, he too is worshipped in Indra's abode by the gods for one hundred billion kalpas.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवाद आदित्यदिननक्तविधिवर्णनं नाम पञ्चदशोत्तरशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred fifteenth chapter, named 'Description of the Aditya Day and Night Procedure,' in the Uttaraparva of the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana, the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Yudhishthira.
संक्रान्त्युद्यापनवर्णनम् यदक्षयं परं लोके पुराणकवयो विदुः
Description of the completion of the Sankranti observance. That which is imperishable and supreme in the world, the ancient poets have known.
विषुवे अयने वापि संक्रातिव्रतमारभेत्
On the solstice or equinox, one should begin the Sankranti vow.
संक्रांतिवासरे प्राप्ते तिलैः स्नानं विधीयते
On the day of Sankranti, bathing with sesame seeds is prescribed.
पद्मं सकर्णिकं कुर्यात्तस्मिन्नावाहयेद्रविम्
One should make a lotus with a pericarp and invoke the sun therein.
