न तेषां बाधिका सत्यं ग्रहपीडा भविष्यति
For them, truly, there will be no affliction from planetary distress.
तेषां शनैश्चर कृता पीडा न प्रभविष्यति
The suffering caused by Shani will not prevail over them.
चरन्वृक्षं शनैरेष शुभाशुभफलप्रदः
Moving slowly, the planet Saturn grants both auspicious and inauspicious fruits.
बलिहोमनमस्कारैः शांतिं यच्छंति पूजिताः 4.114.
When worshipped with offerings, oblations, and salutations, they bestow peace.
कार्यं देयं च विप्राणां तैलमभ्यंगहेतवे
Oil should be given to the Brahmins for the purpose of anointing.
तैलं ददाति विप्राणां स्वशक्त्यान्यजनेपि च
One should give oil to Brahmins according to one's ability, and to others as well.
लोहैस्संघटितं सौरिं तैलमध्ये विनिक्षिपेत्
An iron object shaped like Saturn should be placed in oil.
कृष्णगोदक्षिणायुक्तं कृष्णकंबल शायिनम्
With a black cow as the gift, and lying on a black blanket.
कृष्णगंधैः कृष्णधूपैः कृशरान्नैस्तिलौदनैः
With black fragrances, black incense, rice gruel, and sesame rice.
मंत्रेणानेन ब्रह्मर्षे शन्नोदेवीति भक्तिमान्
With this mantra, 'Om Shanodevī,' the devotee should worship, O Brahmarshi.
क्रूरावलोकनवशाद्भुवनं नाशयिष्यति यो ग्रहो रुष्टः
A malefic planet, when angered, will destroy the world by its cruel gaze.
यत्पुरा नष्टराज्याय नलाय प्रददौ किल
That which was once given to Nala for his lost kingdom.
क्रोडं नीलाञ्जनप्रख्यं नीलवर्णसमस्रजम
A boar, resembling dark collyrium, with a blue hue and similar appearance.
नमोऽर्कपुत्राय शनैश्चराय नीहारवर्णांजनमेचकाय 4.114.
Salutations to the son of the Sun, Saturn, whose color is like mist and collyrium.
नमोऽस्तु प्रेतराजाय कृष्णदेहाय वै नमः
Salutations to the king of spirits, whose body is black, indeed, salutations.
य एभिर्नामभिः स्तौति तस्य तुष्टो भवाम्यहम्
Whoever praises me with these names, I become pleased with them.
एवमूचे शनिः पूर्वमतस्तं ब्राह्मणे ददेत्
Thus spoke Saturn previously, and so one should give it to a Brahmin.
स्थावरेस्थावरे प्राप्ते वत्सरं यावदेव तु
When the stationary period arrives, for as long as the year lasts.
एवमुक्त्वा सुराः सर्वे प्रतिजग्मुर्यथागतम्
Having spoken thus, all the gods departed as they had come.
पिप्पलादोऽपि ब्रह्मज्ञो ब्रह्माज्ञां प्रतिपालयन्
And Pippalada, wise in Brahman, continued to uphold the command of Brahma.
कोणस्थः पिङ्गलो बभ्रुः कृष्णो रौद्रोऽन्तको यमः
He who is stationed at an angle, tawny, reddish-brown, dark, fierce, the ender, Yama—
शनैश्चरमिति स्तुत्वा पिप्पलादो महामुनिः
Having thus praised Śanaiścara, the great sage Pippalāda—
इदं शनैश्चराख्यानं ये श्रोष्यन्ति समाहिताः
Those who listen attentively to this account of Śanaiścara—
कृष्णायसेन घटितां ग्रहराजमूर्तिं लोहे निधाय कलशे तिलतैलपूर्णे 4.114.
Placing an image of the king of planets, made of black iron, in a vessel filled with sesame oil—
आदित्यदिननक्तविधिवर्णनम् व्रतं तद्ब्रूहि गोविन्द सर्वपापप्रणाशनम्
Describe that vow, O Govinda, which destroys all sins, and the rules for the day and night of the Sun.
सूर्याग्निचन्द्ररूपेण तत्त्रिधा जगति स्थितम्
In the world, he abides in three forms: as the Sun, Fire, and Moon.
तमाराध्य पुमान्किं न प्राप्नोति कुरुनन्दन
Having worshipped him, O descendant of Kuru, what does a person not attain?
उत्पद्यते यदा भक्तिर्भानोरुपरि शाश्वती
When unwavering devotion arises toward the Sun, then—
पूर्वोक्तविधिना चैव पूजयित्वा द्विजोत्तमान्
Having worshipped the best of twice-born according to the previously stated method—
विलिख्य द्वादशदलं पूज्य सूर्येति पूर्वतः
One should inscribe a twelve-petaled (lotus), and worship the Sun in the east.
